Two BC students, same grade, same curriculum, completely different year

The short answer

British Columbia delivers Applied Design, Skills and Technologies content in the middle years as short modules that the Ministry says may be offered in a variety of ways, in rotation being its own example, with Grade 8 and 9 options differing again. So what a BC learner has actually met varies by school and by year. Modern Age Coders teaches live online coding and math to ages 6 to 67 in BC, from USD 100 a month, and the first class is free.

That single design decision explains something parents find confusing. Your child can have completed ADST in good faith and still never have written a line of code, while a friend three blocks away spent a term on exactly that. Neither school did anything wrong. The variability is in the structure.

Modern Age Coders teaches from India to families across BC. Lessons are live online and there is no BC location. On timing we are blunt rather than optimistic, because Pacific Time is the widest gap of any market we serve: weekend slots are the realistic option and weekday slots often are not available at all.

Four sensible starting points, not one course for everybody

Four entry points for a province where the school content is delivered in rotations, so what a learner has already met varies enormously. An early beginner, a learner who needs mathematics to become something they can run, a teenager moving into typed code, and an adult. We place by watching, because a grade level predicts very little here.

What the Ministry actually says about how ADST arrives

Three statements, quoted from the curriculum's own introduction, and each one matters.

This is a design choice, not a failing

Rotations exist for good reasons. They let a school use the specialist teachers and rooms it actually has, expose a student to several fields rather than one, and adapt year to year. The cost is predictability. A curriculum built to vary cannot also tell you what any individual child covered, and no policy document can close that gap for you. Only the school can.

What this changes for us is concrete. In most markets a grade level is a reasonable first guess at a starting point. In British Columbia it is close to useless, which is why every learner here starts with a free session in which a teacher watches them work rather than asking what they have done.

The useful question

Ask which modules, not whether ADST happened

One of these questions always gets a yes. The other one tells you something.

"Does the school do ADST?" is answered yes everywhere, truthfully, and tells a parent nothing. "Which ADST modules did you offer this year, and which ones was my child in?" is a completely fair question, takes a teacher thirty seconds, and is the only way to find out whether your child has met anything resembling programming.

The answer usually falls into one of three shapes, and each points somewhere different.

They did a digital rotation

Good. Ask what they built. If they can describe it and explain how it worked, they are ready for typed code and we would start there.

They did other rotations

Also fine, and common. They may have had an excellent year of making things without touching code. Start from the beginning without treating it as remedial.

Nobody is quite sure

The most frequent answer in the middle years, and the reason the free session exists. Fifteen minutes of watching settles it.

None of this is on a BC transcript, earns credit, or satisfies a graduation requirement, and we will not imply otherwise. It is additional time on the part of the curriculum that a rotation, by design, can only touch briefly. Learners join from Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Victoria, Coquitlam, Abbotsford and Kelowna without anybody driving anywhere.

Delivered through other learning areas and through exploratory and purposeful play, with no separate subject.

Ordering, counting and predicting what a program will do before running it. Playful, untimed, and the best possible groundwork.

6 and 7, short modules in rotation

A common set of content options, offered in a variety of ways.

The strongest window in BC. A rotation can start something; sustained weekly work is what finishes it.

8 and 9, different options, varying length

Modular rotations of varying length, or full-year courses.

Placement by observed ability. A learner who had a full year and one who had six weeks are not the same learner.

The learning area is built around design and making rather than around a language.

A course ladder that leaves room for school

It begins with making something and explaining it. The technical rungs wait until a learner can locate their own error without a teacher pointing at the line. For Grade 11 and 12 the ladder narrows to protect graduation requirements, and for a learner who has just come off a short ADST rotation it starts wherever the rotation actually left them. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

How many different school years are possible?

Every market page here works through one analytical trap. BC's comes directly out of the rotation structure above.

The learner starts from a real question with a countable answer. If a school runs a set of modules and each student sits in some of them, how many genuinely different ADST years can exist in one grade? The learner picks the numbers themselves, because the Ministry publishes the structure rather than a roster: say a school offers eight modules and each student takes three.

Almost everybody computes 8 times 7 times 6 and gets 336.

The trap

Counting arrangements when you meant to count sets

Three hundred and thirty-six counts ordered selections. It treats a student who did woodwork, then digital, then food as different from one who did digital, then food, then woodwork. For the question actually asked, which modules did you cover, those are the same year. Every distinct set of three has been counted six times over, because three things can be arranged in six orders.

The real answer is 336 divided by 6, which is 56. Still a lot, and that is the point of the exercise: 56 meaningfully different years inside one grade in one school is why nobody can tell you what a BC child covered from their grade alone. But the learner only earns that number by noticing that order was never part of the question.

Then it gets better, because the overcounting is not always by six. The learner generalises: choosing k things from n unordered means dividing by k factorial, and they write the function, and then they test it against a brute-force list of every possibility for small n to prove the formula agrees. That last step, checking a clever answer against a stupid one that is obviously correct, is the most transferable habit in the whole curriculum.

Every number in the classroom exercise is chosen by the learner. The Ministry publishes the rotation structure, quoted and linked above; it does not publish module counts per school, and we have not invented any.

The question parents ask first

Why teach coding at all when AI can write it?

British Columbia's own curriculum answers this better than an advertisement could, because the learning area is not called programming. It is called applied design, skills and technologies, and it puts deciding what to make ahead of any particular way of making it.

Ask an AI how many different three-module years are possible from eight modules and you may well get 336, stated confidently, with the multiplication shown. You may also get 56. Which one you get depends on how the question was worded, and the answer arrives with the same tone either way. Nothing in the output tells you that a decision about order was made on your behalf.

The durable skill is noticing that the question contained an assumption, and then checking a clever answer against a slow one you trust. That is what the project above trains. It is also, incidentally, how you supervise a machine that writes code faster than you can read it.

Being blunt about the clock

British Columbia is the hardest market we serve for scheduling and pretending otherwise would waste your time and ours. A weekday evening in Vancouver is the middle of the night in India. Weekend slots are the realistic option, and a weekend-heavy pattern works well once it is set. Weekday slots are agreed case by case and are sometimes simply unavailable, in which case you will hear that on the free call rather than after paying.

For a specific goal, a weekend-only week, or a starting point that no current group happens to match.

Two live lessons a week on either plan, and the first session is free and doubles as placement. Prices are published in USD, which is the single international rate rather than a Canadian one, and payment is arranged after the course and slot are agreed.

Questions BC families ask before booking

Including the awkward ones: no transcript credit, no local office, and the worst time zone we work with.

My child did ADST at school. Why would we add anything?

Because ADST content in the middle years is delivered in rotations, and rotations vary. The Ministry describes the Grade 6 and 7 content options as short modules that may be offered in a variety of ways, in rotation being the example it gives, and it says the Grade 8 and 9 options differ again. So two students in the same grade in the same province can both have completed ADST and met genuinely different material. That is not a criticism of the design. It is the reason we place by watching a learner rather than by asking what grade they are in.

So what should I ask my child's school?

Ask which ADST modules were actually offered this year and which ones your child took, not whether ADST happened. The second question always gets a yes. The first one tells you whether they have met anything resembling programming, and it is a completely fair thing to ask.

What time are classes from British Columbia?

This is the widest time gap of any market we teach, and we would rather be blunt than optimistic. No. Nothing taught here appears on a BC transcript, earns credit, or satisfies any graduation requirement. It is additional teaching in the area school timetables give least sustained time to, which is a smaller and more honest claim than most of this industry makes.

How much do coding classes in British Columbia cost?

The first class is free. Group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly, in a group of five to eight compatible learners. Private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. There is no enrolment fee, nothing to buy and no minimum term.

Do you have a location in British Columbia?

No. No BC office, branch or classroom is claimed. Every lesson is live online from India. A learner needs a laptop or desktop, stable internet, working audio and a current browser. The phone number on this page is Indian rather than a local number.

Is coding still worth learning now that AI writes it?

The BC curriculum is unusually well set up to answer this, because it puts design thinking and making at the centre rather than a language. Deciding what to build, and judging whether what came back is actually right, is the part that does not transfer to a tool. An AI produces a confident answer at the same speed whether it is correct or not, and somebody has to be able to tell.

What ages, and do you teach adults?

Six to sixty-seven. Under about nine it is ordering, counting and predicting rather than typing. The middle years are the strongest window in BC precisely because that is where the rotations are, so it is the point at which a learner is most likely to have started something and not finished it. Adults arrive with a task in mind rather than a curriculum.

My child is in Grade 11. Is there any point starting now?

There is, but it should be narrow. One lesson a week on something specific, usually a portfolio piece or a particular language, rather than a general ladder. If graduation requirements are tight, we would say wait, and we have said that to families before.

What happens after we send the form?

Somebody reads it and contacts you to arrange the free session. No card, no charge, and sending the form books a conversation rather than a place in a class.

The first class costs nothing. A learner gets a single problem suited to their age and the teacher watches how they approach it rather than whether they finish. Because BC content arrives in rotations, a grade level is a poor predictor and fifteen minutes of watching is a good one. What comes back is a specific recommendation, including an honest one about timing.
