The short answer
Alberta's CTS computing science courses are worth one credit each and are joined by prerequisites, so they form a chain rather than a menu. Reaching Recursive Algorithms 1 means passing through Structured Programming 1 and 2, Procedural Programming 1, Data Structures 1, Iterative Algorithm 1 and Object-oriented Programming 1 first. Modern Age Coders teaches live online coding and math to ages 6 to 67 in Alberta from USD 100 a month, and the first class is free.
Six links, and high school is six semesters. That arithmetic is the most useful thing on this page, because it means a student who spends their first computing credit finding out what a variable is has already lost the room they needed at the other end.

Four sensible starting points, not one course for everybody
Four entry points chosen against a province where the high school sequence is a prerequisite chain. An elementary beginner, a learner who needs mathematics to become testable, a Grade 8 or 9 student who should arrive at CSE1110 already fluent, and an adult. Placement comes first, because arriving at a chain in the wrong place costs a semester.

Career and Technology Studies computing science is delivered as 1-credit courses, and students usually aim to complete five of them in a semester. An Alberta High School Diploma requires a minimum of 100 credits, so a single computing science course is one per cent of a diploma, and it competes with fine arts, second languages and physical education for the same optional space.
The important part is not the price. It is the dependencies.

Six links, six semesters, nothing spare
If a prerequisite has to be finished before the next course starts, then the deepest material in the sequence sits six semesters from a standing start. Grade 10 to Grade 12 is six semesters. So a student beginning Structured Programming 1 in their first semester of Grade 10, and never taking a wrong turn, arrives at Recursive Algorithms 1 in their last. Anyone who starts a semester late, or who spends the first one on something with no prerequisite because it looked easier, does not get there at all.
Not every course sits on that chain, and that is worth knowing too. Client-side Scripting 1 and 2 and the CSE project courses have no prerequisite, so they are available immediately and are a sensible way to earn a credit or find out whether a student enjoys this. They are just not the door to the deep end. Structured Programming 1 is.

The cheapest semester is the one you do not need
This is the only market where we would tell a Grade 8 parent to start now and mean it structurally rather than commercially.
Structured Programming 1 has no prerequisite, which means Alberta expects a student to arrive at it knowing nothing. That is fair and correct as policy. It is also a whole semester spent learning what a variable is, what a loop does, and why an error message is information rather than an insult.
A student who already knows those things does not skip the course. They spend it consolidating instead of surviving, and they arrive at Structured Programming 2 fluent rather than shaky. Over six links that difference compounds, because every course in a chain assumes the one before it landed properly.
Grades 4 to 6
Ordering, counting, and predicting what a program will do before running it. No syntax, no deadline, and it is the groundwork the whole chain rests on.
Grades 7 to 9
The target years. Blocks into typed code, and the specific goal of being able to write and debug a small program unaided before Grade 10 begins.
Grade 10
Take Structured Programming 1 in the first semester if the deep end is the goal. Scripting and project courses are good, but they are not on the chain.
Grades 11 and 12
Protect the diploma courses. If a learner is starting from nothing here, aim at scripting and a portfolio rather than at recursion.
Nothing here carries CTS credit, appears on an Alberta transcript or counts toward the 100. The claim is narrower and, we think, more useful: arrive at the first link already able to program. Learners join from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Airdrie, St. Albert and Fort McMurray without anybody driving anywhere.
What Alberta's sequence assumes, and which course answers it
Left is what the course list implies. Right is what we would teach against it.
Alberta assumes a student arrives knowing nothing, and builds the first course accordingly.
Arrive knowing something. Blocks into typed code in Grades 7 to 9, so the first credit is consolidation rather than survival.
Fourth in the chain, and the point at which the material stops being about syntax.
Lists, dictionaries and why the shape of your data decides how hard the rest of the program is. Taught long before it is examined.
Iteration and then recursion, at depths five and six. The deep end of the published sequence.
The one place where getting there early actually matters, because there is no seventh semester to recover in.
Computing science competes with fine arts, languages and physical education for the same optional space.
Nothing we teach earns a credit, so this is a trade-off we cannot help with. We can make sure the credits taken are not wasted on catching up.

It opens with making something and explaining it. The technical rungs wait until a learner can find their own error without a teacher pointing at the line, which is exactly the readiness a prerequisite chain assumes. For Grade 11 and 12 the ladder narrows to protect diploma courses, and for a Grade 9 learner it aims squarely at arriving at CSE1110 already able to program. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

Six courses at five a semester is not two semesters
Every market page here works through one analytical trap. Alberta's is a computer science concept applied to the student's own timetable.
The learner is given the prerequisite table above and one question. If you can take five courses in a semester, how many semesters does it take to reach Recursive Algorithms 1?
Six courses. Five per semester. Almost everybody answers two.
You cannot take Structured Programming 2 in the same semester you take Structured Programming 1, because one is the prerequisite for the other. Nor the third, nor the fourth. The chain is a queue, and no amount of spare capacity shortens a queue. The answer is set by the depth of the longest path, which is six, not by dividing the count of courses by the seats available.
This is the critical path, and it is a real algorithm rather than a metaphor. The learner builds the graph as a dictionary of course to prerequisites, writes a function that returns the longest chain ending at any given course, and discovers that adding capacity changes nothing while removing one prerequisite changes everything. Then they run it on Object-oriented Programming 1, which sits at depth four rather than five, and see why Recursive Algorithms 1 needing both branches is what makes it expensive.
One more habit gets taught here, and it came out of researching this page. A widely repeated summary of Alberta's diploma rules gives a per-grade credit breakdown that adds up to 105 against a stated minimum of 100. The parts do not reconcile with the whole, which means somebody has misread something, possibly us. The correct response is not to pick the number you prefer. It is to publish neither and say why, which is what this page does.
The course codes and prerequisites are Alberta's, cited and linked above. The scheduling assumption, that a prerequisite must complete before the next course starts, is stated because it is an assumption rather than a rule we verified, and the learner is asked to test what happens to the answer if it is relaxed.
What is left to learn if AI writes the code?
Look at what Alberta's chain actually builds toward. Data structures. Iteration. Object orientation. Recursion. Not one of those is a typing skill. They are ways of holding a problem in your head, and they are precisely what you need in order to look at generated code and say whether it is right.
Ask an AI how long it takes to reach Recursive Algorithms 1 at five courses a semester and there is a good chance you get two semesters, confidently, with the division shown. It is a reasonable-looking answer to a question that had a dependency structure hidden inside it. Nothing in the reply flags that a constraint was ignored, because the question did not mention one.
Noticing that a problem has a shape the arithmetic does not capture is the skill. It is learnable, it is what the project above trains, and it is worth more the faster machines produce fluent answers.

On scheduling, and why no weekday time is printed here
A weekday evening in Calgary or Edmonton is the middle of the night in India, and we have not confirmed staffing for it. Rather than advertise a slot and then negotiate it away, this page says what we know: weekend slots are the easiest to arrange, a weekend-heavy pattern works well once set, and weekday slots are agreed case by case on the free call. If the only time that suits your family is one we cannot cover, you will hear that before paying anything.
What do coding classes in Alberta cost?

Why does the order of Alberta CTS courses matter so much?
Because the courses are 1-credit units joined by prerequisites, so the sequence is a chain rather than a menu. Structured Programming 1 has no prerequisite. Structured Programming 2 needs it. Procedural Programming 1 needs that. Data Structures 1 needs Procedural Programming 1, Iterative Algorithm 1 needs Data Structures 1, and Recursive Algorithms 1 needs both Iterative Algorithm 1 and Object-oriented Programming 1. Take them out of order and a semester is spent without moving forward.
Which Alberta computing science courses have no prerequisite?
On the listing we checked, Structured Programming 1, both Client-side Scripting 1 and 2, and the CSE project courses have no prerequisite. That matters for a student who wants a credit this semester rather than a place in the chain: scripting is a reasonable standing start, while Structured Programming 1 is the door to everything deeper.

Those are ways of thinking about a problem, not typing skills, and they are exactly what you need in order to judge whether generated code is correct. The syntax was never the scarce part.
My child is in Grade 8 or 9. Is that too early to think about this?
It is the best time, and this is the one market where we would say that with a straight face rather than as a sales line. A student who reaches Grade 10 already able to write and debug a program does not spend their first credit learning what a variable is. Given the chain is six links deep and high school is six semesters, that head start is close to the whole difference between reaching recursion and not.
