You can build a real app with AI in 2026, and the honest division of labour is by layer: models excel at the visible half, screens, forms, styling and standard plumbing, and cannot make the invisible decisions, what your data means, who is allowed to do what, and what happens under misuse, which is where products live or die. The fastest real launch is a web app installed from the browser, since app stores require an adult account holder and review. A beginner in structured classes ships a single-purpose app in two to three weeks. Nothing in this column appears in a screenshot, which is why one-prompt apps demo perfectly and collapse at the second user. This column is the course.

The practical consequence runs through everything we teach on this page: the skill of building apps with AI is not prompting harder at the left column, it is noticing when a question belongs to the right column and answering it yourself, in writing, before the model fills the silence with a guess. Students who internalise that split ship apps that survive their second user, and the split is teachable in a term.

The pattern in the right-hand column is worth saying once, plainly: difficulty in the AI era tracks the number of your-half decisions, not the amount of code. A marketplace is not hard because it is big; it is hard because it is a thousand permission and trust decisions wearing a trench coat. This is also why the single-purpose tool is the perfect first app: it contains every layer of a real product with roughly three decisions in it.

On reaching phones: a web app that installs from the browser covers the overwhelming majority of student and first-product needs, works on every phone, updates the moment you deploy, and requires nobody's store approval. The stores still matter for certain products, and their developer programs require an adult account holder, which for teenagers means a parent's account and a family decision. We teach web-first, stores-when-warranted, and no student of ours has yet regretted the order.

The pipeline

Idea to launched, in five honest stages

The class arc for an app, whatever the age band. The stages never change; only the tools and the stakes scale.

  1. Decide the v1 slice, in writing

    One user type, one core action, one screen if possible. The written slice is the defence against the model's enthusiasm and your own: everything not in it is v2 by definition, and the project survives because of what this stage deleted.

  2. Answer the your-half questions before generating anything

    What is the data, who owns each piece, what may each user do, what happens on collision. Thirty minutes with a teacher, written as plain sentences, pasted into every prompt that follows. This single habit is most of the difference between our graduates and one-prompt builders.

  3. Build the walking skeleton with the model

    Now the left column earns its keep: screens, forms and plumbing generated quickly, read as they arrive, committed to version control at every working step so a bad rewrite costs a revert rather than an evening.

  4. Harden it like a stranger is coming, because one is

    The empty input, the double click, the back button, the visitor who edits the URL, the key that must not be in the page source. One session of trying to break your own app, with a checklist, teaches more security than a semester of being told to care about it.

  5. Launch small, watch one real user, iterate

    A live link, one genuine user who is not the builder, and fifteen silent minutes of watching them. Their hesitations become v1.1. This stage is where an app stops being a project and starts being a product, and it costs nothing but humility.

What builders ask before they start

Can AI build a whole app from one prompt?

It can build something that looks like a whole app from one prompt, and the gap between looks-like and is is the most expensive lesson in this field. What arrives is the visible half: screens, buttons, layouts. The invisible half, what happens to data over time, what two simultaneous users do to each other, what a malicious visitor tries first, arrives only when someone who knows to ask for it asks for it. One-prompt apps demo beautifully and die on contact with a second user.

How much does it cost to build an app with AI?

For a personal tool or a first product, close to nothing beyond time: free model tiers, free hosting tiers and a domain if you want one. Real costs begin with real usage, when hosting, storage and model calls leave free tiers, and with the app stores, where a developer account costs money and requires an adult. The skill of keeping a small app inside free tiers is genuinely teachable and we teach it, because a student's first product should not need a budget.

Can I put an AI-built app on the App Store or Play Store?

Yes, subject to the same review as any app, but check who can hold the account: store developer programs require the account holder to be an adult, so a teenager ships through a parent's account or, more usually, skips the stores entirely. A web app installed from the browser reaches phones without any store, updates instantly, and costs nothing, which is why our student launches are web-first and store-later, if ever.

Do I need to know how to code before building an app this way?

You can start from zero; you cannot finish from zero. The early screens need no code knowledge at all, which is exactly why the method is such a good on-ramp. Somewhere around the first stubborn bug or the first data decision, reading the code stops being optional, and the students who prepared for that moment sail through it. Our classes run both tracks at once so the reading ability arrives before the wall does.

How long does it take to go from idea to a launched app?

A single-purpose web tool: a weekend for an experienced student, two to three weeks for a beginner in classes. A polished product with accounts and payments: months, at any age, with or without AI, because the calendar is consumed by decisions and feedback rather than typing. Be suspicious of any promise measured in hours; those are measuring the demo, not the app.

What about the database and the backend? Can AI handle those?

AI writes backend code fluently; what it cannot do is know your data. Whether a booking belongs to a user or a family, what happens to orders when a product is deleted, which fields must never be editable: these are decisions about your world, and models guess them silently when you do not state them. Our data-modelling sessions are the least glamorous and most valuable hours in the app track, and students only believe this afterwards.

Is it safe to share my app idea with an AI model?

For almost all student and personal projects, the honest answer is that your idea's value is in the execution, not the secret, and sharing it with a model is fine. The real safety rules sit elsewhere: no personal data of real people in prompts while building, no credentials pasted into chats, and test data that is obviously fake. Those three habits, kept, cover essentially all of the actual risk for a learner's app.

Can children build apps too, or is this a teen thing?

Children from about 6 build real apps in block-based environments, and the product thinking, screens, buttons, what happens when, transfers wholesale to the text world later. The AI account age floors mean under-13s do not drive mainstream chat tools themselves, so our kids app course pairs block building by the child with AI demonstrations by the teacher. The apps are real; several of our proudest student launches came from the block course.

What do the app-building classes cost?

The standard figures for everything we teach: USD 100 a month for a group batch of five to eight, USD 150 a month for one to one, flat across every country we serve outside India, with monthly billing and no joining fee.
