Vibe coding: you describe the software, and a model writes the code.

The word did not exist before February 2025 and was a dictionary's word of the year before December. Underneath the hype it names something real: a person building working software by explaining what they want in ordinary language, running whatever the AI produces, and steering it by describing what is wrong. Your child has probably already tried it. This page explains what is actually happening in that loop, shows a genuine session minute by minute including the moment it falls apart, and is straight with you about which tools are even allowed at which ages.

Three vibe coding courses, one for each age

The definition below applies to everyone. The tools and the projects change with age, because the AI platforms publish age floors and we obey them.

The short answer

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want in plain language while an AI model writes the code, then steering it by running the result and saying what to change. The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 and named Collins Dictionary word of the year within the same year. It genuinely works for prototypes and personal tools, and it genuinely collapses at the first bug the model cannot see, which is why the skill worth teaching is describe, run, read, steer rather than prompt and hope. Modern Age Coders teaches exactly that, live, in small batches, with age-appropriate tools from 6 to 67. Group classes are USD 100 a month, one to one is USD 150, and the first class is free.

The definition

Where the word comes from, and what is actually happening

Most explanations stop at "AI writes the code for you". That is the advertisement, not the mechanism, and the mechanism is what decides whether your child gets anything out of it.

In February 2025, Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former director of AI at Tesla, posted about a new way he was building small projects: talking to a model, accepting what it wrote, and in his words fully giving in to the vibes and forgetting that the code even exists. He called it vibe coding. The phrase escaped the lab almost immediately, and by November Collins Dictionary had named it word of the year for 2025.

A word that travels that fast is usually naming something people were already doing. Tens of millions of people who never learned a programming language had discovered that they could type "make me a website for my bakery" into a chat window and get something that runs. That moment is genuinely new in the history of computing, and dismissing it as a toy is as wrong as treating it as magic.

Here is the mechanism without the mystique. A large language model has been trained on enormous amounts of public code, so when you describe a program, it predicts the code that would most plausibly follow such a description. You run that code. Where the result differs from what you meant, you describe the difference, and the model predicts a revision. Round and round: describe, run, react, revise.

Notice what is doing the work in that loop. Not typing. Judgement. The person supplies the intent, the test of reality, and the decision about what "wrong" means. The model supplies syntax at extraordinary speed. Every strength and every failure of vibe coding falls directly out of that division of labour, and the session below shows both within forty-five minutes.

Everything on the left is real and we would never talk a student out of that feeling. A working tool she designed, in one sitting, before learning what a function is.

This is the cliff every unsupported vibe coder falls off. The fix required no typing at all, just the ability to read twelve lines and name what they actually do.

Look at what changed at minute 52. Not the tool, not the model, not the prompt wording. She stopped reporting the symptom and started reading the code, found the cause, and described the cause instead. The model fixed it instantly, because the model was never the bottleneck. Her description was.

That is the entire case for learning vibe coding rather than merely doing it. The loop is easy. Steering the loop when it goes wrong is a skill, it is teachable, and it is the difference between a student who ships projects and a student with a folder of broken half-apps and a quiet feeling that they are not a computer person after all.

Honest scope

What vibe coding is genuinely good for, and what it quietly is not

Genuinely good for

First versions of almost anything. Personal tools with one user who forgives rough edges: revision quizzes, habit trackers, a site for the family business, a bot that renames your downloads. Momentum for beginners, because seeing your idea run on day one is worth months of motivation. And speed for people who already read code, which is why professionals use the same loop under more careful supervision.

It is also, quietly, a superb teacher of one specific thing: precision of thought. A model does exactly what you said, not what you meant, and the gap between those two is where students learn to specify. We have never found a faster way to teach a 13 year old that "it should just know" is not a requirement.

Quietly not

It does not know your intent, so it cannot tell you the app is wrong, only make it different. It does not verify anything: generated code that runs is not generated code that is correct, and the difference shows up exactly when it matters, in edge cases and under load. It has no stake in security, and will cheerfully hard-code a secret key into a public page unless someone reads for it.

Above all, it does not teach by itself. The student in our session log did not learn from minutes 0 to 30, she collected outcomes. The learning happened at minute 52, and only because someone had shown her what to do when the loop stalls. Doing that on purpose, every week, with rising difficulty, is what a course is for.

Two things follow from this table. First, any programme that puts a nine year old alone in front of a mainstream chat assistant is breaking the provider's own terms, whatever its marketing says, and we would rather lose that enrolment than do it. Second, under-13 vibe coding is still absolutely possible: the describe-and-steer instinct transfers perfectly from Scratch and from tools the teacher operates, and children who learn it there are noticeably faster when the real tools unlock at 13. The teachable skill

Six things a student must be able to do for the loop to keep working

This is our working definition of vibe coding skill, and every one of these is trained explicitly in class rather than left to osmosis.

  1. Describe with precision

    "Users log in" hides ten decisions. What identifies a user, what happens on a wrong password, where does the session live? Students practise turning wishes into specifications, which is a skill schools call clear writing and engineers call requirements.

  2. Read what came back

    Not line-by-line mastery, but enough to answer: where does the data live, what runs when I click, which part would I touch to change this? Reading is the safety net under the whole method, and it is the first thing we assess.

  3. Test on purpose, not on vibes

    Clicking around until it feels fine is how the minute 41 bug survives to demo day. Students learn to try the empty input, the double click, the refresh, the wrong password, before the model is asked for anything new.

  4. Name the cause, not the symptom

    The single highest-leverage move in the whole discipline, and the one our session log turns on. "It repeats questions" got three useless rewrites. "It saves the unshuffled list" got a one-shot fix.

  5. Keep versions, so wrong turns are cheap

    Models sometimes make things worse. A student with their work in Git treats that as a shrug and a revert; a student without it loses an evening. Version control enters our syllabus far earlier than it used to, for exactly this reason.

  6. Know what must never go in a prompt

    Passwords, API keys, other people's personal details, and anything the family would not put on a postcard. The habit costs nothing at 13 and prevents the expensive version of the lesson at 23.

What families ask us about it

Is vibe coding a real skill or a passing fad?

The name may age, the activity will not. Describing software precisely, reading what a model produces and steering it with tests is how a growing share of professional programming already works. What is a fad is the version where nobody ever looks at the code; that version produces demos, not products, and the difference between the two is exactly what a good class teaches.

Can my ten year old vibe code?

Not with the mainstream chat tools, and any class that says otherwise has not read the terms. ChatGPT requires users to be 13 with parental permission to 17, and several major tools set the floor at 18. Under 13, our students build the same describe-and-steer instinct inside Scratch and teacher-operated tools, where no personal AI account is needed, and graduate to the real tools at the published ages.

Is vibe coding cheating?

It is cheating in the same sense a calculator is cheating in an engineering office, which is to say it depends what you were supposed to be learning. If the goal of an exercise is to practise writing loops, having a model write them defeats the exercise. If the goal is to ship a working tool, directing a model well is simply how the work is done now. Schools are still drawing this line and we teach students to respect whichever side of it an assignment sits on.

Do you still need to learn to read code?

Yes, and this is the least negotiable part. Our session log above shows why: the whole project stalled on one line that anyone with basic reading skill spots in seconds and the model kept missing. You do not need to write every line any more. You do need to be able to read the lines, or you have no way of knowing what you just shipped.

Which tools do your classes actually use?

It depends on the student's age, because the tools set their own floors. Under 13 it is Scratch plus teacher-run demonstrations. From 13, with parental consent, students work in mainstream assistants and browser development tools that permit teenagers. What does it cost to learn here?

Outside India the figures are flat everywhere: USD 100 a month for a small group batch and USD 150 a month for private one to one teaching. There is no joining fee and no lock-in, and the first session is a free real class rather than a sales demonstration.

Is vibe coding safe for a teenager to do alone?

The risks are mundane rather than dramatic: pasting personal data into prompts, deploying something with an exposed key in it, and picking up the habit of shipping code nobody has read. All three are avoidable with rules a teenager will actually follow, and we build those rules into the class rather than leaving them to a lecture. A parent does not need to supervise the coding; they do need to know which accounts exist and in whose name.

How is vibe coding different from agentic coding?

Vibe coding is the conversational loop: you describe, the model writes, you react. Agentic coding hands the model more autonomy, letting it plan multi-step work, run commands and edit many files before coming back to you. Agentic tools are stricter about age, mostly 18 plus, and we teach them as a separate later stage with its own page and course.

What happens after I fill in the form on this page?

In that class the student builds something small by describing it, then reads the generated code with the teacher. You watch, and afterwards you decide with no follow-up pressure from us.
