Somewhere between yesterday and this morning, your child started building things by talking to an AI, or started asking to. The internet will now offer you either panic or cheerleading, and neither helps you decide anything. The short answer

A parent does not need to understand code to manage a child's vibe coding well. Three things cover most of it: the account ages, which the providers publish and which mean no mainstream AI account under 13 and parental consent from 13 to 17; four household rules about what never goes into a prompt and what never goes public; and a monthly ten-minute check where the child demonstrates their project and answers what broke this week. Choose any class, ours included, by whether it operates inside the account ages and can show you specific finished projects. The AI providers publish minimum ages in their terms, and almost nobody selling classes to your family has read them. Here is the map, and what each row means you are signing.

The practical use of it is a single question you can put to any provider, including us: which accounts will my child need, in whose name, and at what published minimum age? A provider with a crisp answer has done the work. A provider who says "do not worry about that" has told you everything, and what they have told you is no.

One nuance worth naming: an under-13 who cannot hold accounts can still genuinely learn the craft. Nothing about the under-13 rule costs a child years; it only changes which instrument they practise on.

What learning looks like from behind the chair

You cannot read the code, but you can read the child. These two five-minute observations are what a working session and a hollow one look like from where you stand.

The pauses are the learning. A child who stops typing to read has crossed the line from operating a slot machine to directing an instrument.

No reading, no pauses, rising volume, serial abandonment. This child is not lazy or hopeless; they are unsupported, and this pattern is precisely what a taught class replaces.

Three dinner-table questions do the same job without a screen. What does your project do? Real learners answer in specifics, with pride, at length you may regret inviting. What broke this week and how did you find it? This is the question that cannot be faked: debugging stories are only owned by people who debugged. What would you build with one more week? Real learners have a backlog; generators have a shrug.

Ask them monthly, not daily. The point is not surveillance, it is that a child who knows the debugging question is coming starts collecting debugging stories, and collecting debugging stories is, quietly, the whole discipline.

The rules

Four household rules that cover most of the real risk

Written to survive contact with an actual teenager: short, concrete, and with the reason attached, because rules without reasons get renegotiated weekly.

1. Nothing personal goes in a prompt

Names, addresses, school names, photos, passwords, anyone's phone number. The reason, told straight: prompts may be stored and reviewed by the companies, and once sent they cannot be unsent. The workable habit is a stage name for projects and placeholder data for testing, which students adopt easily because it feels professional.

2. Publishing needs a second pair of eyes

The moment a project goes from the family laptop to a public link is the moment a mistake becomes permanent. The rule is not "no publishing", which kills the joy and gets ignored; it is that someone else looks first, a teacher, a parent, an older sibling. In our classes the pre-publish read is a ritual, done together, every time.

3. Accounts are created together, and listed

Every AI account in the house gets created with a parent present and lands on a list on the fridge or the family notes app: which service, whose email, what age it requires. Ten minutes of ceremony, and it converts the age-floor table from our tools guide from theory into household practice. It also means no account exists that you learn about in a crisis.

4. Three failed prompts means stop and read

This one protects learning rather than safety, and it is the rule our teachers enforce in class: after three attempts that did not work, the next move is reading the code, not a fourth, louder prompt. At home you cannot check compliance, but you can ask for the story at dinner, and the child who knows the question is coming behaves differently at the screen.

The routine

The ten-minute monthly check, scripted

Once a month, same day, announced in advance. It works because it is short, predictable and genuinely curious rather than inquisitorial.

  1. Watch the current project run, driven by the child

    Two minutes. You are not evaluating the software, you are watching who is in charge of the demonstration. A child who narrates while driving owns the work; a child who cannot make it run without help is telling you something worth knowing gently.

  2. Ask for this month's best bug

    Three minutes, and the heart of the whole check. Debugging stories cannot be invented on the spot, and asking for them monthly turns bugs from failures into trophies, which is the single healthiest reframe available in this hobby.

  3. Glance at the account list together

    One minute. Anything new since last month? Created together or alone? No drama if the answer is imperfect; the point is that the list stays real, because the list you do not check becomes fiction within a term.

  4. Ask what is public, and look at it

    Two minutes. Any project a stranger can reach, you get the link and you open it on your own phone. You are checking for rule two, and you are also, more importantly, being an audience, which is what every builder of any age actually wants.

  5. End with the backlog question

    Two minutes. What next month's project is, and why. Then stop, on time, even mid-enthusiasm. A check that reliably ends is a check a child stops dreading, and next month's version costs you nothing to convene.

Is vibe coding just more screen time to worry about?

The research distinction that matters is between consuming and producing. An hour spent building a tool that waters the plants is categorically different from an hour of autoplay, in what it asks of the brain and in how a child feels afterwards. Our practical advice is to judge it by output: if the screen hours leave finished things behind, they are working hours. If they leave only fatigue, treat them like any other scrolling.

Do I need to understand coding to supervise this?

No, and this whole page is built on that premise. You can verify real learning with three no-code questions: ask what the project does and watch whether the explanation is theirs, ask what broke this week and how it was found, and ask what they would build next with one more week. A child who is learning answers all three with stories. A child who is only generating cannot answer the second one at all.

Which AI accounts is my child actually allowed to have?

By the providers' own published terms: none of the mainstream ones under 13. From 13, ChatGPT with your permission through 17, and Google Gemini in most countries. Microsoft Copilot depends on where you live, 13 in the UK and US but 18 in India. Claude and Replit require 18 everywhere. What are the actual risks, ranked honestly?

In the order we see them cause real harm: personal information typed into prompts, which is common and preventable with one household rule; published projects containing something private, like a family photo path or a live key; dependence, where the child stops thinking at the first difficulty; and far behind those, the dramatic scenarios that dominate headlines. The first three all have boring, effective controls, and a good class installs them as habits.

My child only wants to make games. Is that a waste?

Games are the single best on-ramp we know. A game needs state, logic, input handling, scoring and the handling of a player who does something unexpected, which is to say it needs everything serious software needs, attached to motivation no worksheet can match. Every cohort contains a child who came for games and stayed for the building; we have never once seen the reverse.

How do I know a class is legitimate before paying?

Ask three questions of any provider, including us. Which accounts will my child need, in whose name, and at what published age? A provider who waves this away has not read the terms they are putting your child inside. Can I sit in on a real class before paying? The answer should simply be yes. And what will my child have made after a term? The answer should be specific things you can look at, not a certificate alone.

Are there hidden costs beyond the class fee?

For our beginner and teen tracks, no: free tiers of the tools are sufficient, and we design around their limits. Some advanced agent-tool courses genuinely require paid subscriptions to the tools themselves, and each of those course pages says so before enrolment rather than after. If any provider's answer to this question is vague, treat that as your answer.

What if my child uses this to do their homework?

Assume they have already tried, and hold two lines rather than one big fight. School work follows the school's AI rules, whatever they are, because integrity systems now catch generated work and the record is not worth it. And the projects in our classes are deliberately things no school assigns, so the temptation to launder does not arise in the room. Named this way, most teenagers keep the lines without drama.

Is a live online class with strangers safe in itself?

Our classes are live video with a named, consistent teacher, batches of five to eight, and a parent may observe any session including the free one. Recordings are not the product and sessions are not public. You will always know the teacher's name, the schedule, and what the current project is, because those are the three things we would want to know as parents.

What does it cost, and what is the commitment?

USD 100 a month for group batches, USD 150 for one to one, the same figures in every country we teach outside India. Monthly billing, no joining fee, stop at the end of any month. The free first class carries no card and no obligation, and it is a working session rather than a pitch.
