Bandar Seri Begawan is made of thirteen mukims, and six of them form Kampong Ayer, the stilt settlement on the Brunei River. Worth reading before you compare providers, because it explains why an address in the capital tells you very little.
Bandar Seri Begawan sits inside Brunei-Muara, the smallest of the country's four districts and by a wide margin the most populous, with 332,462 residents. The municipality itself is estimated at 72,133 people, and it is administratively composed of thirteen mukims: Berakas 'A', Berakas 'B', Burong Pingai Ayer, Gadong 'A', Gadong 'B', Kianggeh, Kilanas, Kota Batu, Peramu, Saba, Sungai Kebun, Sungai Kedayan and Tamoi.
Six of those thirteen are Kampong Ayer, the settlement of stilt villages standing over the Brunei River in the middle of the capital. It is not a preserved quarter or an attraction with a fence round it. It is part of the city's administration, it has been inhabited since long before the city had a name, and Awang Semaun Secondary School is described as the only school of its kind whose buildings are built on water.

Two things in that table are worth holding on to, because the page comes back to both. The total falls by 1,348 between the two censuses, a drop of about 13 per cent. And two of the six mukims, Peramu and Sungai Kedayan, go up.
Why "a class in Bandar Seri Begawan" is a weak promise
On 1 August 2007 the municipal area went from 12.87 square kilometres to 100.36, roughly eight times larger, without anybody moving house. So a physical class advertised as being in the capital can sit most of an hour's drive from a family who also live in the capital, and if the family live over the river the first part of that journey is not a drive at all. Online, the distance between a learner and the teacher is the same from every mukim in the list above, and it is nil.

The order runs from making things to explaining them, and only then to typing. Nobody is asked to memorise syntax before they can describe what they built. A learner in Year 9 upward gets a narrowed ladder, because O Level time is the scarcest thing in the household. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

You cannot add a part to its whole
Every page in this cluster works through one analytical mistake. The capital's is the one that ruins more spreadsheets than any other, and the numbers above are all a learner needs to walk into it.
The question given to the learner is deliberately ordinary. How many people live in Bandar Seri Begawan and its water village? Two figures are on the table: 72,133 for the city and 10,250 for Kampong Ayer at the 2016 census.
Almost everybody adds them. 82,383. It is the obvious move, the units match, and nothing about the two numbers looks incompatible.
Kampong Ayer is not next to the capital. It is six of the capital's thirteen mukims: Burong Pingai Ayer, Peramu, Saba, Sungai Kebun, Sungai Kedayan and Tamoi. Every name on that list appears on the list of thirteen. So the water village is a subset of the city, and the 10,250 are already sitting inside the 72,133.
The learner writes the union properly. For two sets the size of the union is the size of the first plus the size of the second minus the size of the overlap. Here the second set is entirely contained in the first, so the overlap is the whole of the second set, and the arithmetic collapses: the union is just 72,133. The addition did not approximate the answer. It overstated it by exactly the size of the smaller set, which is 14.2 per cent of the true figure.
Then comes the rule the learner takes away, and it is one line. Before adding two counts, name one person who is in the first and not the second. If you cannot describe that person, the sets are nested and addition is not an estimate, it is a category error. The size of the mistake does not depend on how big the numbers are. It depends entirely on how much they overlap, which is the one thing the numbers themselves never tell you.
The same discipline is then turned on the two census columns. Between 2016 and 2021 the water village total falls by 1,348, about 13 per cent, and it would be easy to write the sentence "Kampong Ayer is emptying". Check the parts and two of the six went up, Peramu from 1,111 to 1,151 and Sungai Kedayan from 230 to 241. A direction that is true of a total can be false of the things the total is made of, and a learner who has just been caught out on set membership is unusually willing to go and look.
Every figure in the exercise is public and is linked above. No household, school or family is described, and the learner does the arithmetic themselves rather than being shown it.
Does coding still matter when AI can write it?
Try this before you decide. Ask any assistant how many people live in Kampong Ayer. There is a good chance you are told about thirty thousand, confidently, in a well-shaped sentence.
The censuses say 10,250 in 2016 and 8,902 in 2021. The thirty thousand figure is not invented: it was roughly right in 1981, when the settlement held about 28,000 people, and it has been copied from travel page to travel page ever since. The model is reproducing a consensus faithfully. The consensus is forty-five years old.
That is the shape of the problem, and it is not one that gets fixed by a better model. The output was fluent, plausible and sourced from real text. What it lacked was somebody asking as of when. A learner who has spent a term being caught out by their own arithmetic asks that question without being prompted, and that habit is the actual product here. Do you have a centre in Bandar Seri Begawan?
No, and we would rather say so on the first screen than let you find out later. There is no office, branch or classroom of ours anywhere in the capital. Every lesson is live online, taught from India, and the telephone number on this page is an Indian one. What a learner needs is a laptop or desktop, a connection that holds, working audio and a browser that is up to date.
My child is in Kampong Ayer. Does that change anything?
It removes a journey, which is the whole point. Six of the capital's thirteen mukims stand on the Brunei River, and a household there reaches most land-based activities by boat first and road second. An online class asks for none of that. The lesson arrives at the house, at an agreed time, with the same teacher and the same group as everybody else in it.
How does placement work if you have never met my child?
By watching them attempt one thing. The free first session hands the learner a single problem chosen for their age, and the teacher reads how they go at it: where they start, what they try when it fails, whether they can say out loud what they expected to happen. That is far more informative than a year group, and in a capital drawing on this many different schools it is the only method that holds up.
What time would the class be, and does it move?
It does not move, ever. Brunei is on UTC plus 8 and observes no daylight saving, and Indian Standard Time does not either, so the difference between the capital and the teacher is fixed at two hours thirty minutes for the whole year. An early evening in Bandar Seri Begawan is a mid-afternoon at the other end. Agree a time once and it stays right.
How much do coding classes in Bandar Seri Begawan cost?
The first class is free. Group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly, in a group of five to eight compatible learners. Private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. There is no enrolment fee, nothing to buy and no minimum term.
Which days do you teach on?
Whichever days the household is free, and in the capital that question has a sharper edge than elsewhere in Brunei. This is the seat of government, so a great many families here keep the public sector pattern, in which Saturday is a working day. Others, particularly in banking and services, keep a Monday to Friday week. We ask rather than assume, and we fix the recurring slot only after you have told us.
Is this a substitute for school?
No. It sits alongside school and it awards nothing. What it does is give a learner sustained time on one build across several weeks with somebody who can read their broken code, which is the single thing a school timetable is least able to hand any one subject. We will also tell you when the answer is fewer lessons, and in an O Level year that is often the answer.
What ages do you actually teach?
Six to sixty-seven, and the range is not decoration. Below about nine the work is ordering, sequencing and predicting rather than typing. Adults are a routine part of the intake, and in the capital a good share of them come from ministries and from the banks around Gadong, wanting to automate reporting they currently assemble by hand.
Can we start and then stop if it is not working?
Yes. There is no minimum term and no enrolment charge, so stopping costs you nothing beyond the month you are in. We would rather you paused for an examination term and came back than paid for lessons nobody has the energy for. Pauses and plan changes are set out on the pricing page.
What happens when we send the form?
A person reads it and rings you to arrange the free session. There is no card and no charge at that stage, and the form does not hold a seat in a class. It starts a conversation, in which the course, the format and the day are all settled before money is mentioned.
