Worth reading before any provider quotes you a local statistic, because none of them will tell you which population they divided by.
Kampong Gadong is a village and neighbourhood inside Bandar Seri Begawan, in Mukim Gadong B, covering 254.4872 hectares. It recorded 3,356 residents at the 2021 census. Its landmarks are the ones the whole capital uses: the Centrepoint Hotel, completed in 1994 as part of the Abdul Razak Complex, and The Mall with the Rizqun International Hotel, inaugurated on 9 July 2006, a three-storey structure over two basement parking levels with a cinema, a supermarket, a food court and a range of shops.
The two mukims that carry the name are much larger. At the 2021 census Mukim Gadong A held 35,424 and Mukim Gadong B held 38,067, giving 73,491 between them. Brunei-Muara district as a whole held 318,530, and its eighteen mukims sum to exactly that figure, which is the check worth doing on any table before using it.
So a sentence beginning "in Gadong" can be describing any of these, and the reader has no way of telling which.

That distinction is the practical version of the whole page. The denominator is a choice, and a rate means nothing until you name it
Every page in this cluster works through one analytical mistake. Gadong supplies the one that quietly wrecks most local statistics, and it does it with four numbers that are all correct.
The learner is asked for something innocuous: how many shops are there in Gadong per thousand people? They count the shops, divide by the population, and write it down. The problem is the second half of that sentence.
Divide by Kampong Gadong and the denominator is 3,356. Divide by Mukim Gadong B, which contains the village, and it is 38,067. Divide by both Gadong mukims and it is 73,491. Divide by the district whose residents actually do the shopping and it is 318,530. The largest of those is ninety-five times the smallest, so the shops-per-thousand figure moves by that factor while the numerator never changes at all. Every one of the four is a real, published, correctly cited number.
Notice what the data cannot do here. Nothing in the table tells you which denominator is right, because rightness is not a property of the numbers. It is a property of the question. If you are asking how well served the residents are, the residents are the denominator. If you are asking how busy the shops are, the people who arrive there are, and most of those live somewhere else. Two sensible questions, two different divisors, and one arithmetic operation that looks identical in both cases.
So the learner is made to write the sentence before the code. This is X per Y, where Y is the population of, as of, counted by. If any of those three cannot be filled in, the rate does not get computed yet. It is a small discipline and it is the one that separates a figure somebody can act on from a figure that merely has a decimal point in it.
Then the general form, which turns up far outside statistics about shops. Crime per resident in a district full of visitors. Revenue per employee where half the staff are contractors. Cases per capita where the population moved during the period being measured. In each of those the numerator is easy and correct, the division is trivial, and the entire result is decided by a choice nobody wrote down. A rate is two numbers and an argument, and the argument is the part that gets left out.
All five figures are public and linked above, and the eighteen mukims of Brunei-Muara sum to exactly the published district total, which the learner checks first so that the rest of the exercise stands on something verified.
Does coding still matter when AI can write it?
Ask any assistant how many people live in Gadong. You will get a number, delivered cleanly, and you will very probably not be told which Gadong it chose.
That is not a failure of knowledge. Ask it directly to distinguish the village from the mukims and it will do so correctly. The gap is that the original question contained an ambiguity, the answer resolved it silently, and nothing in the reply flags that a choice was made on your behalf.
Which is the durable job. Somebody has to notice that a question has more than one reading before an answer arrives dressed as the only one. That reflex is not taught by a syllabus and it is not acquired by reading about it. It is built by being caught out, repeatedly, on data small enough to check by hand.

Because proximity is the wrong denominator. A class needs five to eight people at one level, in one subject, free at one hour. Do you have a centre in Gadong?
There is nothing of ours in Gadong, and nothing in the country either. Sessions are delivered by video from India, and the number printed on this page terminates in India rather than Brunei. All you need to supply is a computer with a real keyboard, a connection stable enough for video, audio the teacher can pick up, and a browser that is not several years out of date.
Which days do you teach on?
The days your household names. This is the capital, so a great many families here keep the public sector pattern in which Saturday is a working day, while others in banking and services keep Monday to Friday. Brunei is the one country whose working week is not continuous, so publishing a default weekend slot would be an admission that we had not looked. The evidence is on the Brunei country page.
My child is in Year 7. Is that the right time to start?
It is the best window in the system, and we would say so even if it were inconvenient. Years 7 and 8 carry no national certificate, so there is room in them, and they sit before the point at which a stream narrows what is available later. By Year 10 the honest advice is usually fewer lessons rather than more.
How much do coding classes in Gadong cost?
The first class is free. Group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly, in a group of five to eight compatible learners. Private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. There is no enrolment fee, nothing to buy and no minimum term.
What time would the class be, and does it shift?
It does not shift. Brunei holds UTC plus 8 for the whole year and India holds UTC plus 5:30 for the whole year, so the difference is permanently two and a half hours: seven in the evening in Gadong is half past four in the afternoon for the teacher. A recurring slot agreed in one term is still the correct slot in the next.
Is this a substitute for school?
It does not, and no qualification comes out of it. What it provides instead is uninterrupted stretches of weeks on one piece of work, supervised by a person capable of reading failing code and explaining why it fails. Timetables are poorly built for handing that to any single subject. Where the honest recommendation is to scale back, as it frequently is during an examination term, we make it.
What ages do you actually take?
Six to sixty-seven. Below about nine the work is ordering, sequencing and predicting rather than typing. Adults are a routine part of the intake, and in the capital a good share come from ministries and from the banks nearby, wanting to automate reporting they currently put together by hand.
Can we stop if it turns out not to suit?
Yes. There is no minimum term and no enrolment charge, so stopping costs the month you are in and nothing else. We would rather a family paused for an examination term and came back than paid for lessons nobody has the energy for. Pauses and plan changes are set out on the pricing page.
What happens after we send the form?
A person reads it and rings you to arrange the free session. No card is asked for and nothing is charged at that stage. Sending it opens a conversation rather than an enrolment and does not hold a place in any class. Course, format and evening are all decided in that conversation before money is mentioned.

The opening session is free and it is a lesson rather than a sales call. A learner attempts a single problem chosen for their age and the teacher reads the approach rather than the result, which tells us more in fifteen minutes than a form would in a page. Afterwards you get something precise: this course, this format, this evening, and why each. If the honest answer is that they are better off waiting a year, that is the answer you will be given.
