Modern Age Coders teaches live online coding to ages 6 to 67 in Hong Kong from USD 100 a month, and the first class is free.

Knowing that number changes the conversation. Most parents comparing after-school options have no idea how much coding the school day already contains, so they are choosing in the dark. In Hong Kong you can look it up, and once you have, the honest question is not whether the school is doing enough. It is what a different order of contact time is for.

Modern Age Coders teaches from India. Hong Kong is two and a half hours ahead and, because neither side observes daylight saving, that gap never moves. Four entry points, chosen against what a Hong Kong school actually covers: a P1 to P3 child who has not met coding in class yet, a P4 to P6 pupil already inside the upper primary allocation, a secondary student moving from blocks into typed code, and an adult starting from nothing. What a learner did last year is context, not a level.

Hong Kong did not leave primary coding to whichever teacher was interested. Read the number honestly and it points both ways

Fourteen or more hours a year is a serious, structured introduction, and it is more than most education systems anywhere specify. It is also roughly one afternoon a term. A weekly class is not competing with that; it is a different quantity of contact time, and pretending otherwise in either direction would be dishonest. The school starts the subject. Whether anything follows is a separate decision, and it should be made with the number in front of you.

The other useful detail is what the programme is called. Not programming, not app building. Computational thinking, with coding as the thing you do to practise it. That ordering is deliberate and it is the same ordering we use, which is why a learner coming out of P6 in Hong Kong tends to arrive here able to reason about a problem before they can type a solution to it.

Where a learner actually is

What P6 leaves a learner able to do, and what it does not

This is the most common question we get from Hong Kong, and it has a specific answer.

A pupil who has been through three levels of computational thinking usually arrives with the reasoning in place and the fluency absent. They can talk about sequence, condition and repetition. They can look at a problem and see parts. What they generally cannot yet do is write typed code from a blank file, read an error message and act on it, or find their own mistake without somebody standing next to them.

That gap is not a failure of the school. It is what fourteen hours a year buys, and it is a good use of fourteen hours. Closing it is a fluency problem, and fluency needs frequency, which is the one thing a school timetable cannot give a single subject.

P1 to P3

Before the formal allocation begins. Ordering, counting, and explaining what a thing will do before it does it.

P4 to P6

Alongside the school's own work. We stay out of its way and build the typing fluency it has no room for.

Junior secondary

The best window in the whole system. Blocks to Python, with no public examination pressure yet.

Senior form

Reduce rather than add. If a learner is starting here, one lesson a week and a narrow goal.

Nothing here requires travel, which in a city where an after-school class can cost forty minutes each way is worth saying. Learners join from Kowloon, Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Tseung Kwan O, Tai Po, Kwun Tong, Yuen Long and Hong Kong Island on the same terms.

The curriculum puts the thinking before the language, on purpose.

A learner arrives having followed a real progression, not a collection of one-off activities.

Placement picks up from what they can actually do rather than from which level they completed.

Public examination years

Senior form time is spoken for, and everybody knows it.

Fewer lessons or a pause. We would rather recommend that than sell a full timetable into an examination year.

UTC+8, no daylight saving

The gap to India is fixed at two and a half hours, in January and in July alike.

An evening class here is a late afternoon for the teacher, and the recurring slot never needs resetting for a clock change.

A course ladder that leaves room for school

The first rungs are about building something and being able to say why it works. The typed, technical rungs wait until a learner can locate their own error unaided. For senior form students the ladder deliberately narrows, because the public examination years are not the time to start something new. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

The plus sign that everybody drops

Every market page here works through one analytical trap. Hong Kong's is hiding in the figure this page is built on.

The learner is given the published line and a straightforward question. Fourteen or more hours a year, across P4, P5 and P6. How many hours of coding does a Hong Kong pupil get in primary school?

Every learner answers forty-two. Fourteen times three. It is arithmetic they could do at seven, the source is primary, and the number is wrong.

The trap

A bound is not a value

The published figure is not 14. It is 14 or more, which is a floor with nothing above it. The honest answer is "at least 42 hours, and possibly a great deal more, and the source does not say." Forty-two is not an estimate of the total. It is the smallest total the data permits, presented as though it were the total.

Dropping the plus is the most common error in reading published statistics, and it is almost invisible because the result looks like a normal number. "10,000+ students" becomes 10,000. "Ages 6 to 67" becomes 67. A minimum wage becomes a wage. Once the qualifier is gone, nobody downstream can tell it was ever there, and every calculation built on it inherits a false precision.

The second error is quieter. Even if the figure were exactly 14, multiplying by three assumes all three years are identical, and the source says three levels of sequential material, which is a reason to expect they are not. Two assumptions, neither stated, both invisible in the answer.

So the learner writes the program twice. Once returning a single number, and once returning a lower bound with a note about what is unknown. Then they are asked which version they would want if they were the parent making the decision. Nobody picks the single number.

This page states 14 or more hours everywhere it appears, including the table above, for exactly that reason. The classroom exercise uses the published figure and the learner's own arithmetic; nothing about individual schools or pupils is invented.

The question parents ask first

Does coding still matter when AI can write it?

Hong Kong's own curriculum gives the shortest answer available. It did not name the subject programming. It named it computational thinking, and put coding underneath as the way you practise it.

That ordering is the whole argument. Ask an AI how many hours of coding a Hong Kong primary pupil receives and it will return 42, cleanly, with the multiplication shown. It will not mention that it silently converted a floor into a value, because it was not asked to and the question did not invite it. The output is well formed and the reasoning inside it is unavailable for inspection.

What is left for a person is noticing the plus sign, refusing to multiply a bound, and writing down what is unknown. That is not nostalgia for typing. It is the actual work, it is what the project above trains, and it gets more valuable as generated answers get more fluent, not less.

Why the fixed gap is worth a paragraph

Most of our markets need a conversation twice a year when somebody's clocks change and a recurring class lands an hour out. Hong Kong Time is UTC+8 with no daylight saving and Indian Standard Time is UTC+5:30 with none either, so the difference is two and a half hours in every month of the year. A slot agreed in September is still the right slot in March. Tell us about school hours and any examination dates before it is set, and it should not need touching again.

No enrolment charge, nothing to buy, no minimum term.

Group $100 per month, 8 classes

For a learner who works well hearing how others approached the same problem, at the shared level of a five to eight person group.

Private $150 per month, 8 classes

For a narrow goal, an examination-year timetable, or a starting point that no current group matches closely.

Two live lessons a week on either plan, so eight in a normal month. The number is USD because there is one published international rate rather than a per-city one. The free session comes first and settles the course and the slot; how you pay is arranged after that, not before.

Questions Hong Kong families ask before booking

Including the two nobody else answers: what the school already covers, and whether we have an office here.

My child already does coding at primary school. Why would we add anything?

Because you now know the size of what the school covers, which most parents do not. The upper primary allocation is real teaching and it is a good introduction, but it is measured in hours per year, not hours per week. A weekly class is a different order of contact time. Neither replaces the other, and nobody here will suggest the school is failing.

What does CoolThink actually cover, and where do you start after it?

It runs across P4 to P6 in three levels and 24 units, and it is built around computational thinking rather than a single language. A learner who has been through it usually arrives able to reason about sequence and conditions but not yet to write and debug typed code independently. That is a very good place to start, and it is where the free class picks up.

Is the schedule difficult, given the time difference?

It is the easiest of any market we teach. Hong Kong runs on UTC+8 with no daylight saving, and India is UTC+5:30 all year, so Hong Kong is two and a half hours ahead and the gap never moves. An after-dinner class here lands in the late afternoon for the teacher. There is no seasonal reshuffle and no recurring booking that breaks twice a year.

Which days, and what about the exam years?

The Hong Kong school week is Monday to Friday, so the weekend is the ordinary one. For a learner in the public examination years we would recommend fewer lessons rather than more, or a deliberate pause. Say what is coming before the recurring slot is agreed rather than after.

How much do coding classes in Hong Kong cost?

The first class is free. Group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly, in a group of five to eight compatible learners. Private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. There is no enrolment fee, nothing to buy and no minimum term.

Do you have a centre in Hong Kong?

No. No Hong Kong office, branch or classroom is claimed. Every lesson is live online from India. A learner needs a laptop or desktop, stable internet, working audio and a current browser. The phone number on this page is Indian, and WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach a person.

Is coding still worth learning now that AI writes it?

The Hong Kong curriculum answers this better than we can. It does not call the subject programming. It calls it computational thinking, and it puts that first deliberately. Thinking is the part that survives, because an AI will produce a confident wrong answer as readily as a right one and cannot tell you which it has given you.

Do you teach in English, and does that matter here?

Classes are in English. In Hong Kong that is worth stating plainly, because medium of instruction is a live question for families and some learners are stronger in Cantonese for everything except technical vocabulary. Programming keywords are English either way, which in practice makes this easier rather than harder, but the teacher will slow down on terminology rather than assume it.

What ages, and do you take adults?

Six to sixty-seven, and both ends are used. Below about nine the work is ordering and counting with no typing. Adults usually arrive with a task rather than a syllabus, most often something they currently do by hand in a spreadsheet and would rather not.

What happens after we send the form?

Somebody reads it and contacts you to arrange the free session. Nothing is charged, no card is needed, and submitting the form books a conversation rather than a place in a class.
