Kampong Jerudong is a settlement of Mukim Sengkurong, which at the 2021 census was the largest mukim in Brunei-Muara with 40,972 residents. Jerudong itself recorded 3,856 people at the 2016 census across 32.97 square kilometres and twenty-three settlements, about twenty-one kilometres from the capital, and it hosts institutions on a national scale rather than a village one. Kampong Jerudong lies about twenty-one kilometres from Bandar Seri Begawan, covers 32.97 square kilometres and takes in twenty-three settlements. It recorded 3,856 residents at the 2016 census. Administratively it belongs to Mukim Sengkurong, which at the 2021 census held 40,972 people and is the largest of the eighteen mukims of Brunei-Muara.
What sits here is out of all proportion to that. Jerudong Park opened in 1994, offered free admission for years, and was revamped and relaunched in 2014; its amphitheatre hosted internationally known performers in 1996. Jerudong Park Medical Centre houses Gleneagles JPMC, a specialist cardiac clinic. The Empire, a five-star beach resort, opened in 2000.
So Jerudong is a name that carries weight in Brunei and abroad while belonging, in every official table, to a mukim called something else.

Why an online class suits an area built around people who commute into it
Jerudong is a small resident population wrapped around institutions that draw from the whole country: a hospital, a resort, a park. That shape is pleasant to live in and unhelpful for assembling a class, because the people passing through are not the people who would sit in one every Tuesday. Households here also sit across several different school systems, so a year group predicts even less than usual. Our groups are formed on demonstrated ability from an intake across twenty-five countries, which sidesteps both problems at once, and the placement is done by watching a learner work rather than by asking which school they attend.

Building comes first, explaining second, typing third. Syntax is never the first thing anybody is asked to memorise. From about fifteen the ladder narrows deliberately, because by then the scarce resource is hours rather than choices. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

An absent record is not a zero
Every page in this cluster works through one analytical mistake. Jerudong hands you this one before you have written any code at all, simply by not appearing in the table you expected to find it in.
The learner has a list of Brunei-Muara mukims with populations, and a second list of places they are interested in. The task is to look each place up and report its population. Jerudong is on the second list. It is not on the first.
There is no Mukim Jerudong. Kampong Jerudong is a settlement inside Mukim Sengkurong, which is the largest mukim in the district at 40,972 people. So the lookup fails, and what happens next is entirely a choice made by whoever wrote the code, usually without noticing that they were making it.
The commonest choice is the worst one. A default of zero, or a fill of zero after the merge, turns a fact the data does not contain into a fact the data appears to assert: Jerudong, population 0. That row then behaves like every other row. It goes into the sum, where it does no harm. It goes into the mean, where it drags the average down. It goes into the minimum, where it wins. It appears at the bottom of the sorted table, looking exactly like a real finding about a real place, and nothing anywhere warns anybody.
The learner is made to separate three states that ordinary code cheerfully mashes together. A genuine zero is a measurement: somewhere with nobody living in it. A missing value means nobody measured. A value under another key means it was measured and filed elsewhere, which is the actual situation here. Those three call for three different responses, and only the first belongs in an average.
The practical rule is short and it holds far outside this example. Never let a lookup failure become a value. Keep missing as missing, count how many rows are missing and print that count next to every summary you produce, and go and find out why before filling anything in. In this case the finding is not an error at all: Jerudong exists, it has thousands of residents, and it is recorded under Sengkurong. The zero was never a fact about Jerudong. It was a fact about the join, wearing the costume of a fact about the world.
Every figure in the exercise is public and linked above, and the eighteen mukims sum to exactly the published district total, so the learner can confirm for themselves that the table is complete and Jerudong is genuinely not a mukim rather than a row somebody forgot.
Does coding still matter when AI can write it?
Ask any assistant for the population of Mukim Jerudong. The interesting part is not whether it is right; it is which of the several possible wrong answers you get.
Sometimes you get a number for Kampong Jerudong presented as though it were the mukim. Sometimes you get Sengkurong quietly substituted. Occasionally you get a plainly invented figure, because a confident answer is more probable in the training data than a statement that the entity does not exist. What you rarely get, unprompted, is the one useful reply: there is no such mukim, and here is why you thought there was.
That failure has the same shape as the coding bug above. In both cases something absent gets converted into something present, and the conversion is invisible in the output. A person still has to be the one who asks whether the thing being described exists in the form the question assumed.

Beginning with the one families who move ask first.
We may be posted elsewhere in a year or two. Is it worth starting?
It is the strongest argument for starting, rather than against it. Nothing about this depends on a building or a country: a learner keeps the same teacher and the same group through a move in either direction, and the only thing that changes is the arithmetic on the clock. What they take with them is not a certificate but three or four things they designed and built and can explain, and that travels across curricula and across borders in a way a school report does not.
Do you have a centre in Jerudong?
Nothing here, and nothing elsewhere in the country. The lesson is a live video call whose other end is in India, and the number given above rings in India as well. Your side of it needs a computer rather than a phone, an internet connection that will carry video for ninety minutes, working audio, and a browser from roughly the last few years. There is nothing to buy and nothing to install.
My child is not on the Brunei national curriculum. Does that matter?
Not to the teaching. Placement is done by watching a learner attempt a single problem, which does not depend on which syllabus they follow, and this area has households on several different systems so we are used to it. What we do adjust is the vocabulary, so a lesson is not built around a curriculum your child has never opened.
Only a few thousand people live here. Can a group class really be assembled?
Yes, because the group has nothing to do with Jerudong. Between five and eight learners are put together on what they can currently do, out of an intake covering twenty-five countries, so a fourteen year old here works alongside people at their own standard rather than alongside whoever happens to be nearby and roughly the same age. In a place this size that is precisely why online beats local for this subject.
How much do coding classes in Jerudong cost?
The first class is free. Group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly, in a group of five to eight compatible learners. Private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. There is no enrolment fee, nothing to buy and no minimum term.
What time would the lesson be?
Whatever suits, and it will not drift afterwards. Brunei sits at UTC plus 8 all year and India at UTC plus 5:30 all year, so the separation is permanently two and a half hours: seven in the evening here is half past four in the afternoon for the teacher. Families who have done European postings usually find that surprising, because a schedule agreed in one season normally has to be redone in the next.
Which days do you teach on?

Does this compete with school?
No, and there is no certificate at the end. Its contribution is consecutive weeks spent on one build, supervised by someone who can look at code that fails and say something better than start again, which is the specific thing a school timetable finds hardest to allocate to one subject. Where cutting back is the better advice, we give it.
Do adults join?
Yes, ages six to sixty-seven are taught, and adults are a routine part of the intake rather than an exception. The usual pattern is a narrow objective, often automating something done by hand each month, taken one to one and finished within a few months rather than carried on indefinitely.
What happens after we send the form?
It reaches a person, who telephones to arrange the free session. No card is requested and nothing is charged. Being plain about what you are doing: sending it opens a conversation rather than an enrolment, and it does not hold a seat in any class. Course, format and evening are agreed in that conversation, ahead of any discussion of money.
