Program Overview

New York City Public Schools describes the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) as "the exam used as the sole factor to determine admissions to New York City's Specialized High Schools (except LaGuardia High School, whose admissions are determined through an audition process)." The eight testing schools it lists are Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn Technical High School, High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for Sciences at York College, Staten Island Technical High School and Stuyvesant High School. The test is for New York City residents in grade 8, or in grade 9 for the first time.

The test changed in fall 2026. NYC Public Schools says: "Beginning in fall 2026, the SHSAT will move to a computer-adaptive test." There are two sections, "50 questions per section", and a standard test time of 180 minutes. The math section "includes questions about ratios and proportional relationships, number system and expressions, equations, inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry", with multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank and technology-enhanced items. In the math section students "will not be able to return to the question after they have advanced." Each subject also has "10 unscored field-test items". The 2027 admissions guide says math questions on grade 8 forms "are based on the New York State's learning standards through Grade 7", that the math items "will require you to apply familiar Math skills to complex, multi-step problems", and that formulas "will NOT be given". Calculators are on the guide's list of items not to bring.

This course teaches that math in depth. Students build fluency and accuracy without a calculator, learn to set up multi-step word problems, master the grade 7 and grade 8 content the test draws on, and practice answering one question at a time with no going back, the way the adaptive test works. Practice uses our own original problems, plus the four free official practice tests on the NYC SHSAT Portal, which students take there. We never copy official test items.

The same grade-level math also supports two other selective-school tests. Hunter College High School's entrance exam (for 7th grade entry, on Wednesday, January 27, 2027) has a math section that, in Hunter's words, "assesses students' understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills". Boston Public Schools uses a student's MAP Growth test score and GPA for its exam schools. We are independent of NYC Public Schools, Hunter College High School and Boston Public Schools, and we make no promise of scores or offers.

What Makes This Program Different

  • ✓ Built for the computer-adaptive SHSAT that NYC Public Schools introduced in fall 2026: 50 math questions, one at a time, no going back
  • ✓ No-calculator fluency taught on purpose: fractions, decimals, percents and negative numbers done fast and checked
  • ✓ Multi-step word problems broken into a repeatable routine: read, model, solve, check
  • ✓ Grade-matched content: the grade 7 standards behind grade 8 forms and the grade 8 standards behind grade 9 forms
  • ✓ Monthly timed practice sections of our own original problems, plus the four free official practice tests on the NYC SHSAT Portal
  • ✓ Honest about admissions: the SHSAT is the sole factor for the eight testing schools, and we promise learning, never a seat

A strong grade 6 student preparing for Hunter may join after the demo class. It suits grade 7 students planning to sit the shsat in the fall of grade 8; grade 8 students who want focused practice before their test date; grade 9 students taking their one grade 9 opportunity, with extra grade 8 content.
What will they learn and build?
New York City Public Schools describes the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) as "the exam used as the sole factor to determine admissions to New York City's Specialized High Schools (except LaGuardia High School, whose admissions are determined through an audition process)." The eight testing schools it lists are Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn Technical High School, High.
How deeply are topics covered?
The course runs 6 months (24 weeks) per cycle, joinable any month; families usually start in grade 7 for the fall test in grade 8 at 2 live classes/week + weekly problem sets, no-calculator drills and a monthly timed digital-style practice section, across 3 phases listed week by week in the syllabus below.
Who teaches it?
Modern Age Coders mentors, who teach the live classes themselves. You can watch them at work in the free class recordings before you decide.
How do practice, feedback and assessment work?
Classwork in every session and homework after every class.
What does it cost?
Three monthly plans: a group batch, a mini batch and 1-on-1. Prices are shown in your currency in the plans section. Monthly billing, cancel any time.
When can classes take place?
Live classes are scheduled around your week. Group batches meet at a fixed weekly slot; 1-on-1 students choose their own. International students are scheduled in their own timezone. Ask on WhatsApp for the current slots.
Can I watch the teaching before deciding?
Yes. Full recordings of real 13 and up classes are free to watch, free with a Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.
Can I enroll without a live demo?
Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly; a demo is not required. If you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo.
