The order is a dependency chain rather than a preference: each rung is unusable without the one beneath, which is why students who jump to the interesting-sounding end can demonstrate and cannot explain. The question this page answers
Every provider publishes a syllabus. Almost none of them tells a parent what the visible evidence of progress looks like at each stage, which is the only thing a non-technical family can actually judge. So that is the middle column of the table below.

Two honest notes about the ages. They are typical rather than prescriptive: we have taught eleven year olds working comfortably at rung three and seventeen year olds who needed to start at rung one, and neither is unusual or a problem. And the rungs overlap in practice. A student does not finish data and then begin machine learning; they return to data constantly, because that is where the errors live.
The three places people skip
Almost every stalled student we meet has skipped one of these three. They are listed with the symptom, because the symptom is what a parent notices first.
Symptom: the child can describe what a program should do and freezes at a blank file.
Blocks are a fine on-ramp and a poor destination. The thing typing teaches that dragging cannot is that syntax is unforgiving and errors are readable, which is the entire relationship a programmer has with a computer. A student who has never sat with a traceback has not met the subject.
Symptom: everything works on the teacher's file and nothing works on a real one.
Tidy academic datasets teach method and hide the actual job. Real data has missing rows, inconsistent units, duplicated records and one value that is a piece of text pretending to be a number. A student who has never cleaned anything will trust their first result, and trusting your first result is the defining beginner error.
Symptom: the child reports an impressive accuracy figure and cannot say what it is impressive compared to.
Before any model is believed, the student writes the dumbest defensible alternative: always guess the average, or always guess yesterday. Many first models fail to beat it. Discovering that is the single most valuable hour in the whole ladder, and it is skipped almost universally.
Roughly, at two ninety-minute sessions a week: rung one is a term to a year depending on starting age, rung two is a term, rung three is two terms, rung four is a term once three is solid, and rung five runs alongside everything from about the middle of rung two onward.
Those are honest averages and individual children vary enormously, mostly according to how much they build between sessions rather than how quick they are. The single strongest predictor we have seen is whether a student has something they personally want to make.
We will not promise a timeline to a job, a university place or a competition result. We will not claim this content appears on an Omani school certificate, because it does not. And we will not tell you a nine year old can be doing machine learning within a month; the honest answer is that they can be doing genuine computational thinking within a month, and machine learning some years later.
Where the ladder points once it is finished is a published portfolio, which is the asset that outlives every syllabus.
The version nobody writes down
Everything above is framed around school-age learners because that is who most of the questions come from. Adults are a substantial part of our Oman intake and their ladder is the same shape and a different length, so it is worth setting out separately.
Rungs one and two, heavily. An adult who already works with spreadsheets has most of the mental model for data handling and simply lacks the syntax, and the syntax is a few weeks. The abstractions that take a child a year to absorb take a working adult a term, because they arrive with the reasoning already built by whatever else they do.
Rung three. Statistical intuition is genuinely slow for everybody, and confidence in a number you have not checked is a habit adults have had longer and defend harder. The baseline lesson lands with more force on a forty year old precisely because they have been quoting unbenchmarked figures in meetings for years.
Rung five. An adult rarely wants a public portfolio; they want the thing running and somebody else able to maintain it. So the same discipline, documentation, a stated error rate and a named failure mode, points at a colleague rather than an admissions officer. The requirement is identical and the audience is not.
In practice an adult with a specific objective, most often something currently done by hand every month, goes one to one and finishes inside a few months rather than a few years. The syllabus bends entirely around the task, which is possible privately and not in a batch. One entry point is specific to Oman and worth naming. Under a February 2021 agreement between the Ministry of Education and Omantel, an IT and coding curriculum ran in Grades 1 to 4 for three academic years from 2021/2022. A child who sat that in Grade 1 is now around Grade 5, and in our experience they arrive with real foundations and no idea what to do with them: they recognise sequence and condition, they have debugged something, and they have never typed a line of Python. That profile lands cleanly on rung one and moves faster through it than a complete beginner, which is worth knowing before you assume your child is starting from nothing. Questions about the sequence
They can be shown it, and they will not be able to check any of it, which in this subject is the same as not knowing it. Machine learning without data handling means every interesting error is invisible to the student. Agents without evaluation means no way to tell a good decision from a lucky one. We would rather lose a month explaining that than sell a course that produces somebody who can demonstrate and cannot debug.
Not remotely, and fifteen is in some ways the easiest age to start. The abstractions that take a nine year old a year to absorb take a fifteen year old a term, and the mathematics is already there. What a late starter loses is not capability but accumulated build time, which is why we push a repository from very early on: three finished things beat three years of attendance.
Something running, within weeks. Something worth showing a stranger, a term. Those are honest averages at two ninety-minute sessions a week, and the biggest variable is not talent but whether the student builds anything between sessions. The strongest predictor we have seen is whether they have something they personally want to make.
Less than parents fear, and later. The working set is the algebra of arrays for how data is shaped, a little calculus for how a model corrects itself, and statistics for whether a result means anything. Each arrives at the point it explains something the student has already watched happen on their own screen. Children who arrive convinced they are bad at maths frequently revise that.
A group batch of five to eight students is USD 100 a month and one to one teaching is USD 150 a month, billed in US dollars, the same flat figures everywhere outside India. There is no enrolment fee, no annual contract, and the first class is free without a card.
No, and we will not imply otherwise. It runs alongside school and awards nothing beyond a completion certificate. What it tends to affect is how a student handles open-ended work, because they have practised turning a vague objective into something checkable. Where the honest advice during a certificate year is fewer lessons, we give it.
Whichever the free first class puts them on. A learner attempts one problem while the teacher reads the approach, and fifteen minutes of that is far more reliable than a form, a school report or a parent's estimate. Occasionally the answer is a rung lower than expected, and we would rather say so at the start than discover it in week six.
Yes, and quite often that is the right call. We teach mathematics as its own subject at every level, so a student whose blocker is algebra rather than syntax can address the actual problem instead of struggling through a coding course that keeps stalling on the same thing.
Yes, usually compressed and usually one to one. Ages six to sixty-seven are taught. Adults typically arrive with a concrete objective, which lets the syllabus skip a good deal and go deep where it matters, and most finish inside a few months rather than a few years.
A mentor calls at an Omani hour to arrange the free session. Nothing is charged and no card is requested. Sending the form opens a conversation rather than an enrolment and reserves no seat. The rung, the format and the evening are all agreed on that call before money is mentioned.

A learner attempts a single problem chosen for their age while the teacher watches how they approach it rather than whether they finish. What comes back is specific enough to argue with, including the cases where the honest recommendation is to start lower than you expected or to wait a year.
