The water pools are the main draw and they run in a line up the valley. A sequence where effort and interest both increase together is the shape that guarantees a biased sample rather than merely permitting one.
Muqal Cave sits at the end of the upper pools, a limestone cave formed by the erosion of the rocks over thousands of years. The most distinctive feature in the wilayat is also the hardest one to reach.
The valley lies some 200 km from Muscat and is popular with visitors. Being accessible as a destination and internally difficult is exactly the combination that fills the first pools and empties the last.
The sample stops where the path does
Nobody decides to exclude the far pools. The survey simply ends when the scramble starts, and the resulting dataset carries no record of where it stopped. What comes out is a complete-looking table describing the part of the valley with a path to it.

The water pools are described as one of the most prominent tourist attractions here. They are the thing being measured, which makes their arrangement along the valley the relevant fact.
Muqal Cave is a natural limestone cave in the wilayat, reached at the end of the upper pools. Its position is the reason the far end of the valley is visited least and photographed most.
The cave was formed by the erosion of the rocks over thousands of years. A process that slow is a reminder that the valley was not designed for anybody's convenience, least of all a surveyor's.
The valley is described as some 200 km from Muscat and popular among visitors. That is close enough to be a day trip, which is what determines how far most people actually walk once they arrive.
Wadi Bani Khalid is a wilayat of Ash Sharqiyah North in its own right, not only a destination. One name covering a valley and an administrative unit is worth stating before anybody counts either.
Published sources give both Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Bani Khaled for the same place. That is ordinary for Arabic names written in English and it is noted here rather than quietly standardised.
Modern Age Coders has no connection to the valley, the cave or anything else above and claims none. The wilayat is used here because access difficulty and the quantity of interest rise together along it, which is the exact condition that turns a convenient sample into a wrong one.

The four reachable pools average 1.77 metres. Nothing about that number is wrong. It is the correct mean of the readings that were actually taken.
All ten pools average 3.80 metres. The convenient sample understates the wadi by 53 per cent, and the deepest pool anybody ever put a tape into is 2.6 metres against a real deepest of 6.9.

If the far pools were shallow, stopping early would cost nothing. They are not, and they are deep for the same reason they are hard to reach: the valley steepens.
