Program Overview
C++ has a reputation for being hard, and for adults learning alone it can be. For a 9 to 12-year-old with a patient teacher, it is something else: a language that makes the computer's thinking visible. Every variable has a type, every line ends with a semicolon, and the compiler says exactly what it did not understand. Children who learn this way pick up habits of precision that make every later language easier.
This 6-month live course is written for that age. It starts with what a program is and what a compiler does, then builds one idea at a time: printing and input, variables and arithmetic, decisions with if and else, loops, functions, lists with vectors, strings and finally grouping data with structs. Each idea arrives inside something a child wants to make, such as a times-table trainer, a number guessing game, a secret code machine, a pet simulator, tic-tac-toe or a maze. Topics that need more maturity, like pointers and memory management, are left for our C++ for Teens course.
The final month introduces the kind of short puzzle problems used in programming contests. USACO, the USA Computing Olympiad, accepts C++ solutions and starts every new participant in its Bronze division, so students finish with a clear picture of what that next step looks like if they enjoy it. Classes are live and small enough for the teacher to read every child's code, and every month ends with a short check so parents can see real progress.
What Makes This Program Different
- Written for ages 9 to 12: one new idea at a time, explained with pictures and everyday examples before any syntax
- A game or puzzle in every lesson, so practice feels like play while the habits stay rigorous
- Compiler errors taught as clues, not failures: children learn to read them and fix their own code
- Pointers and manual memory left for later on purpose, so younger students build confidence before complexity
- A first taste of contest-style problem solving in the final month, with USACO Bronze as a visible next step
- A clear bridge to our C++ for Teens course for students who want to keep going
