Cross-sectional data is the most available kind and the most confidently misread, because a single moment looks like an explanation as well as a description. A group is older than average. That is a state. It could have arrived by people of that age joining, or by the people already there ageing while nobody joined, and those two histories imply opposite things about what happens next. Ask a model about a district where 49 percent of residents are over forty-five and the word ageing will appear, because it is the natural word for that shape and because most of the text it has read uses it.
