Coding classes in Purmerend serve 96,182 people (statistics office, 1 January 2026) in a market town that grew as an overspill town for Amsterdam and, on 1 January 2022, merged with the Beemster. In 1995 the count was 73,084. The statistics office has recalculated the years before the 2022 merger to the present boundaries, so that figure already includes the Beemster, and the gain of 23,098 people, 32 percent, is on the same ground throughout.
From 1434 Purmerend is described as a town in official documents, and in 1484 it received market rights. The town has called itself Marktstad for many years, and the Purmerends Museum stands in the old centre. The encyclopaedia names seven wijken for the town: Centrum, Overwhere, Wheermolen, Purmer-Noord, De Gors, Purmer-Zuid and Weidevenne.
As a groeikern from the 1960s Purmerend grew at great speed: after 1960 the population rose from about 10,000 to about 80,000. The encyclopaedia puts it plainly: the town lies conveniently for Amsterdam, where many residents, often former residents of the capital, work.
15,586 of the 43,664 households have children and 15,744 hold one person. 14,241 residents are under fifteen, 10,401 are aged fifteen to twenty-five, 24,402 twenty-five to forty-five and 25,988 forty-five to sixty-five, while 21,150 are sixty-five or over, 22 percent.
The Beemster, dry since 19 May 1612
The Beemster became dry land on 19 May 1612, with Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater in an advisory role, and in 1999 the polder was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Within it lie four villages: Middenbeemster, Noordbeemster, Westbeemster and Zuidoostbeemster. The former municipality of Beemster covered 72.08 square kilometres, 2.80 of them water. On 1 January 2022 it was dissolved and merged with Purmerend, after a council election for the new municipality on 24 November 2021 at which the turnout was 32.4 percent.

A map shaded by area makes Purmerend look like a polder with a town attached. A headcount makes it a town with a polder attached. And the council that governs both was chosen by about a third of the people entitled to choose it, which says nothing about the other two thirds, who may think exactly like the voters or not at all. Each view is correct for its own question and misleading for the others: a figure about land is not a figure about people, and a figure about the people who answered is not a figure about everyone who was asked.

The people who answer a question are rarely a random sample of the people who were asked. They may care more, have more time, feel more strongly, or simply be the kind of person who answers things, and each of those can move the result in a direction that the result itself cannot reveal. Ask a language model what Purmerend wanted when it merged with the Beemster, and it will answer in the voice of the town, because that is how news reports are written and how it learned to summarise them. It will not usually say that about two in three people entitled to vote did not, or that nobody knows what they would have chosen. The same model, asked about a product, will summarise its reviews as what customers think, and the reviews came from the small share of customers who write reviews. The answer is fluent in both cases, and in both cases it describes the answerers as if they were everyone.
