The rule

If A people are in one group and B in another, out of a total of n, the overlap is at least A plus B minus n, and never below zero, and at most the smaller of A and B. People who did not answer sit in neither group, which keeps the rule honest.

Separate tables can prove limits, not an answer

When two facts about the same people are published separately, the exact overlap is lost, but it is not unknowable in every sense. There is always a smallest and a largest overlap the two facts allow, and sometimes the smallest is large enough to say something real. The mistake runs both ways: inventing an exact overlap by assuming the two things are unrelated, or giving up entirely when the limits would have settled the question. Work out the limits first; they tell you whether the published tables can answer the question or whether it needs data that was never released.

The learner writes a function that takes the two tables, a list of rows from each, and the total, and returns the lowest and highest possible overlap. Then they write a second function that actually builds a table of 6,909 imaginary trips matching both published tables, arranged first to make the overlap as small as possible and then as large as possible. Seeing both extremes built for real, from the same two published columns, is what makes the rule believable. The exercise that follows asks the learner to find the question about Enniscorthy trips where the limits are tightest, and to explain why.

The tempting shortcut

When to ask for more

What this page does not claim

It may well give a single figure. The tables only support a range.

Give an AI assistant both Enniscorthy tables and ask how many people leave before seven and travel for 45 minutes or more, and a common move is to multiply the two shares and report the product as if the questions were unrelated. The result looks precise. The published data are consistent with any number from 0 to 729, so the precision is invented.
