The Koppelpoort is a combined land and water gate, one of the city gates built between 1380 and 1451. Its architect and a single construction year were not found at source and are not stated here.

What is not claimed

This page does not state why the particular values 155,000 and 463,000 were chosen beyond the reason its source gives, which is that the origin was placed outside the country for practical reasons. Any explanation involving the ordering of the two axes is left out because no source read here says it.

1. Move the origin on paper

Under the old numbering the tower is at zero, zero. Under the current one it is at 155,000 and 463,000. Every other point in the country shifted by exactly the same amounts, because a change of origin adds a constant to every coordinate. The learner writes the two lines that convert between the systems and confirms the tower round-trips.

2. Find what survives the move

A point 700 metres west and 300 metres south of the tower is at minus 700, minus 300 in the old numbering and at 154,300 by 462,700 in the new. Its distance from the tower is 762 metres either way, because subtraction cancels the constant. Distances, bearings and areas are unchanged; the coordinates themselves are not.

3. Mix the two and watch it fail quietly

Now take the tower in old coordinates and the neighbour in new ones, and compute the distance between them. The answer is about 489 kilometres, which is roughly the length of the country. It is not an error message, it is not a negative number and it is not obviously absurd on a screen. That is exactly what makes it dangerous.

Coordinates are relative to a choice; differences are not

An absolute coordinate is only meaningful once you say which origin it is measured from, and origins are chosen by committees for practical reasons, moved when the reasons change, and rarely recorded in the same file as the numbers. What survives a change of origin is every quantity built from differences: distances, areas, bearings, shapes. What does not survive is any statement about a single point on its own. The practical rule is to carry the name of the system alongside every coordinate, refuse to combine two points whose systems differ, and use a sanity check on scale, because a wrong answer here arrives as a number rather than as an error. An AI will compute the distance between two coordinates without asking which grid they are on. Why should a child in Amersfoort learn to ask?

Because the formula is right, the arithmetic is right, and the answer can be out by the length of the country.
