CBSE's Computational Thinking & AI Curriculum: a parent's complete guide

The short answerFrom the 2026-27 session, CBSE introduces Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) for Classes 3 to 8. It is integrated into existing periods, not a separate subject, and schools are directed to introduce it rather than being ordered to. Classes 3-5 cover computational thinking only; AI literacy begins in Class 6. It becomes a compulsory Class 9 subject with a board examination from 2027-28.

What CBSE actually announced (and what it did not)

The headlines were noisy, so here is what the paperwork says. On 30 October 2025 the Ministry of Education announced a consultation and an expert committee, though that was not the launch. The curriculum was launched by CBSE Circular Acad-15/2026 on 1 April 2026, which states: “CBSE introduces the Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Curriculum for Classes III–VIII from the academic session 2026–27.”

Three things are widely misreported, so be careful:

The curriculum was written by an expert committee chaired by Prof. Karthik Raman of IIT Madras, with the stated aim of creating AI-literate learners by 2030.

The class-by-class breakdown

Classes 3, 4 and 5: Computational Thinking (50 hours a year). Decomposition, patterns, algorithms and logical sequencing, embedded in Mathematics and The World Around Us. No AI tools, no coding platform required.

Class 6: where AI literacy starts. What AI is and is not, automation versus intelligence, the three ways machines learn (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement), and digital footprints.

Class 7. Regression, classification and clustering in plain terms; an introduction to computer vision and natural language processing; and, importantly, bias: why an AI system can be unfair.

Class 8. The AI project cycle: define the problem, collect data, test AI tools, reflect and improve, plus no-code tools and fairness. Classes 6-8 carry 100 hours a year.

Class 9, from 2027-28. This is the part parents should plan around: CT & AI becomes a compulsory Class 9 subject with an annual examination. A child in Class 8 this year sits it as a board subject next year.

The honest gap, and why it matters for your child

None of the above is a criticism of CBSE. Putting computational thinking in front of every child is the right move. But the design has a ceiling that CBSE states plainly: it is low-tech, it adds no instructional time, and it is delivered by the existing subject teacher from a companion book. For a child who is simply meeting the competency, that is enough. But a child who is curious, who wants to actually train a model, build a chatbot, and understand why it gets things wrong, will not find that in a shared maths period with no extra time.

That is the gap we were built for. That is the gap we exist to fill, and it is why our classes go deeper than any school timetable has room for.”

Frequently asked questions

Is AI compulsory for Classes 3 to 8 in CBSE?

No. CBSE's own wording is that schools are 'directed to introduce' Computational Thinking and AI from 2026-27 (Circular Acad-15/2026). It is integrated into existing periods, not a separately examined subject. It becomes a compulsory subject with a board examination in Class 9, from the 2027-28 session.

From which class does CBSE actually teach AI?

AI literacy begins in Class 6. Classes 3 to 5 cover computational thinking only - decomposition, patterns and algorithms - and the official handbooks for those classes are titled 'Computational Thinking', with no AI. This is the single most misreported point about the rollout.

Does the new curriculum need a computer or special software?

No. CBSE has deliberately designed it to be low-tech and activity-driven, 'without reliance on specific platforms, devices, or additional instructional time'. It is taught inside existing periods as a companion to the NCERT Mathematics textbook. Real hands-on tools are exactly what a dedicated class adds on top.
