CBSE AI for Classes 6-8: where AI literacy actually begins

The short answerClass 6 is where CBSE's new curriculum introduces artificial intelligence: what AI is, automation versus intelligence, and how machines learn. Class 7 adds regression, classification, clustering, computer vision, NLP and bias. Class 8 teaches the full AI project cycle. It runs for 100 hours a year, integrated into existing periods. And from 2027-28, CT & AI becomes a compulsory Class 9 subject with a board exam - so a Class 8 student this year sits it next year.

The class-by-class AI syllabus

Class 6: foundations. What AI is and is not, automation versus intelligence, the three ways machines learn (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement), and digital footprints. This is where AI literacy genuinely starts in the CBSE curriculum.

Class 7: how AI works. Regression, classification and clustering explained simply; an introduction to computer vision and natural language processing; and bias: why an AI system can produce unfair results.

Class 8: building with AI. The AI project cycle: define the problem, collect data, test AI tools, reflect and improve. Plus no-code tools and fairness. Classes 6-8 carry 100 hours a year, integrated into existing periods.

Why the Class 8 to Class 9 jump is the one to plan for

Here is the fact worth acting on. From the 2027-28 session, CT & AI becomes a compulsory Class 9 subject with an annual examination. That means a child in Class 8 this year meets it as a board subject next year: not an elective, not an activity in a maths period, but an examined subject.

A note for older students: CBSE discontinued the earlier AI skill subject (code 417) for Class 9 from 2026-27, and Class 10 continues on the previous scheme. The skill-subject codes 417 (Class 10) and 843 (Classes 11-12) remain current for 2026-27.

Beyond the textbook: building real AI skill

CBSE's Class 6-8 material is genuinely good on concepts, but by design it is low-tech and shares time with existing subjects. A student who wants to actually train a classifier, build a chatbot, and understand why a model gets things wrong needs to build, not just read. Not from 2026-27. CBSE Circular Acad-18/2026 discontinued the AI skill subject for Class 9; students already in Class 10 continue on the earlier scheme. What replaces it is the new compulsory CT & AI subject from 2027-28. Our Class 9-12 AI course prepares students for both the codes that remain (417 at Class 10, 843 at Classes 11-12) and the new curriculum.
