Where can a Miami teenager learn Python and AI with a live teacher?
Modern Age Coders teaches Miami teens in grades 7 to 12 live online: Python from the first line, then data projects, machine learning and AP Computer Science, in level-matched batches of fifteen to twenty or one to one. Classes run on Eastern Time, and the first lesson is free, with no card asked for.
Miami-Dade is bigger than two US states. The county’s own description says it covers more than 2,000 square miles, larger than Rhode Island and Delaware, and its public library system spreads 50 mapped locations across that area, from Sunny Isles Beach down to Naranja. A teenager who wants to know how far apart those branches really are has a perfect first Python problem: the county publishes the coordinates, and the haversine formula turns two pairs of latitude and longitude into miles. This page covers the courses we teach Miami teens, what Florida law says about computer science in school, how the library project works, and how live classes from India line up with Eastern Time.
Facts last verified 18 October 2026. Teaching is online; no Miami branch is claimed.
Chosen by grade and ambition, then set at the right level in the free lesson.

The foundation: variables to classes, then real data files such as the Miami-Dade library points.

| Topic | What the county says |
|---|---|
| Size | More than 2,000 square miles, larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware |
| Local government | 34 incorporated municipalities, plus unincorporated communities and neighborhoods |
| County Commission | A 13-member Commission, with the county structured into 13 districts |
| Standing in Florida | The most populous county in the state |
| A lighthouse | Built on Key Biscayne in 1825 to warn ships away from the reefs |
| The railroad | Henry Flagler’s railroad arrived in 1896 |
| A city is born | The City of Miami was incorporated later that year with 344 voters |
| The Miami Circle | Uncovered in 1998: a 38-foot diameter circle cut into limestone, about 2,000 years old |
| PortMiami | 8,564,225 cruise passengers in 2025 |
For a coder, the most useful line in that table is the first one. A county that is wider than some states is a county where “near” means very different things in different places. In Brickell a library may be a short walk away; in the far south it can be a drive. That difference is exactly what a distance calculation can measure, and it is why the signature project below starts with geography rather than with a chatbot.
A student who groups the library points by their CITY field finds Miami, Miami Beach, Doral, Hialeah and many more, and learns that one metro holds dozens of separate local governments.
Every library point carries a latitude and a longitude. Once a teen can read two numbers as a place, a whole category of map problems opens up, from nearest stops to delivery routes.
The 1825 Key Biscayne lighthouse, the 1896 railroad and city, the 1998 Miami Circle: a timeline a ninth grader can chart with four lines of matplotlib.
From Florida Statutes section 1007.2616, Computer science and technology instruction, read on the Legislature’s Online Sunshine site on 18 October 2026.
Section 1007.2616 tells public schools to give students in grades K-12 opportunities to learn computer science, and says those opportunities must include computer science courses in middle school and high school. It also closes a gap for students whose school does not run a course: if a district does not offer an identified course, it must provide access through the Florida Virtual School or other means. And it lets eligible computer science courses and technology certifications count toward the mathematics or science requirements for a high school diploma. On access, Code.org (2025), 2025 State of AI + CS Education, records 463 of 1,192 Florida high schools offering a foundational computer science course in 2023 to 2024, from state education agency data. In short, the law guarantees a route; whether a Miami teen takes it, and how far they go, is still a choice.
The Florida Department of Education website refused our request on 18 October 2026, so this page quotes the statute itself rather than department guidance, and no course list is reproduced.
Miami-Dade County publishes its public library branches as map points. Teens download all 50, write the haversine formula in Python, and find each branch’s nearest neighbour.
| Result | Library records | Our distance |
|---|---|---|
| Most isolated branch | Naranja Branch to South Dade Regional | 6.03 miles |
| Island branch | Key Biscayne Branch to Coconut Grove Branch | 5.28 miles |
| Third most isolated | South Dade Regional to Palmetto Bay Branch | 4.20 miles |
| Closest separate sites | Coconut Grove Branch and Virrick Park Branch | 0.70 miles |
| Same coordinate | Westchester Regional Library and a second Westchester record | 0.00 miles |
| Median nearest-branch distance | All 50 records | 1.78 miles |
| North to south span | Northeast Dade-Aventura Branch to Naranja Branch | 36.1 miles |
The county’s feature service returns 50 library records with LAT and LON fields. Students load them into a list of dictionaries and check that every latitude sits near 25.5 to 26 degrees, a quick sanity test that catches swapped columns.
Flat-map distance is wrong on a sphere, so students code the haversine formula with math.radians, math.sin, math.cos and math.asin, using an Earth radius of 3,958.8 miles, and test it on two points whose distance they can check on a map.
A double loop compares each branch with every other branch, 50 times 49 comparisons, and keeps the smallest. Then the discussion: why does Key Biscayne look isolated when it is close to the mainland as a bird flies?
The zero in the table is the most instructive number on the page. Two records, Westchester Regional Library and a Westchester health and wellness information point, share exactly the same coordinate, so the naive nearest-neighbour code reports a distance of 0.00 miles. A student has to decide what that means: are they one building with two services, or a data entry shortcut? Either way, the program needs a rule, such as skipping identical coordinates or merging them, and the student has to write that rule down. That is a real software engineering decision, made on real public data.
Every distance here is our calculation from one download on 18 October 2026. Straight-line distance is not travel distance, and Miami-Dade County says the data is provided as is and is not guaranteed to be accurate or complete. The county has not reviewed these results.
A stretch task turns the project toward AI. Once a teen has nearest distances for every branch, they can cluster the 50 points with k-means and compare the clusters with the CITY field. Does the algorithm rediscover Miami Beach as a group? It is a gentle first look at unsupervised learning, built on numbers the student already understands, instead of a black box on someone else’s data.
Miami-Dade runs on Eastern Time. India keeps one clock all year, so the gap to our teachers shifts in November and March.
Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays.
With Miami on Eastern Daylight Time, India time runs 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. After clocks go back on November 1, 2026 the difference grows to 10 hours 30 minutes, until March 14, 2027.
Ahead of each switch we send every family its class time in Eastern Time, so a slot after school in Kendall or Aventura does not drift by an hour.
Time zones in code
IANA lists Miami under America/New_York. A useful teen exercise is a script that takes a class time in India time and prints it for Miami across the November 1, 2026 change, using zoneinfo rather than a fixed offset that would break.

AI and Machine Learning for TeensProblem Solving for TeensAn assistant can write a distance function. A student needs to know when its answer is quietly wrong.
Ask an AI tool to find the nearest library to each branch and it will happily produce code. It may use flat-earth distance, which drifts at this latitude, or it may report a zero without comment, as the Westchester records show. A teen who has written haversine by hand spots both problems in seconds; one who has not will copy the result into a school project.
That is the habit our classes build. Students use AI assistants for speed, then verify: they test a function on a pair of points they can check, they read every line before running it, and they explain in their own words why the output makes sense.
Miami teens who can question a confident answer are the ones ready for serious AI work, whatever they go on to study. The longer argument is in is coding still worth learning in 2026.
A county more than 2,000 square miles wide is hard to cross after school. An online class does not need to.
A teen in Doral and one in Miami Beach can join one lesson, each from their own room, with no I-95 drive on a weeknight.
Teachers think in US grades and the school calendar. Projects can support a school computer science course or AP, and graded school work remains the student’s alone.
