The provincial capital, the second city, and half its households of one

The national register held 171,822 people in the municipality on 1 January 2026, in 85,669 households averaging 1.92 people, on 97.74 square kilometres of land inside 101.54 of territory: 1,733 residents to the square kilometre. In 1995 the count was 134,572, so Arnhem has gained 37,250 people in thirty-one years, a rise of 28 percent.

A working city, not a student one

24,923 residents are under fifteen and 22,672 are between fifteen and twenty-five; 52,031 are between twenty-five and forty-five and 28,522 are sixty-five or over. 41,787 households hold one person, 49 percent. The higher-education mix is unusual: 11,302 at the applied level against 1,800 at university level, the most lopsided of any city on this site.

The schools

44 primary establishments teach 13,320 pupils and 18 secondary establishments teach 9,070, both counted for 2025. A city of this size with this many primary places and this few secondary ones is a city whose teenagers travel, and travelling to a weekly evening class is exactly what an online lesson removes.

Capital, but second

Arnhem is the seat of the province of Gelderland and its eleventh-largest municipality in the country, and it is nonetheless smaller than Nijmegen, twenty minutes down the road. Being the capital and not the largest is a distinction this cluster has met before, and it is worth saying plainly rather than letting a reader assume.

A city on the Nederrijn, under the Veluwe

Arnhem received city rights on 13 July 1233 from Count Otto the Second of Gelre. It sits on the north bank of the Nederrijn with the Veluwe rising behind it: the Veluwezoom, 5,000 hectares and the first national park in the country, declared in 1930, whose Signaal Imbosch at 109.9 metres is also the highest point in Gelderland. Burgers' Zoo, founded by Johan Burgers in 1913 and moved here in 1923, covers 45 hectares and recorded 1,074,594 visitors in 2024.

Where the learners are

Twenty-four wijken, two villages and a river through the middle

The statistics office divides the municipality into 24 wijken and 83 buurten. The names people actually use are older and fewer, and the river splits the city in a way no boundary table quite captures.

The centre and the north bank

The rebuilt heart of the city, the station, and the streets that climb towards the Veluwe. Most of the 49 percent single-person households and most of the applied-education students are within a few kilometres of here.

Elden and the south bank

Across the Nederrijn, Elden and the districts around it, joined to the rest by the bridges. A separate village in living memory, now the southern half of the city, with its own primary schools.

Schaarsbergen

North of the city on the edge of the Veluwe, a village inside the municipality, closer to the woods and the national park than to the centre and a genuine drive on a winter evening.

Presikhaaf and the east

Post-war housing towards Velp and Westervoort, where the primary schools are fullest and the under-fifteen share is highest.

The west

The districts towards Oosterbeek and Renkum, older housing on the slope, and the ground over which most of the September 1944 fighting moved.

De Praets, 't Vlot and the edges

The smallest named places in the municipality, along with parts of Terlet and Deelen out on the heath. Twenty-four wijken cover all of it, and none of those lines has ever decided who sits in which group.

The landings

The entry on the battle: about 5,200 British airborne troops landed on 17 September 1944 and about 1,900 more on 18 September. It separately gives 30,000 men for the wider operation including actions in Noord-Brabant, which is a different quantity over a different area and is not used in the arithmetic on this page.

The tallies

From the same entry: British losses about 1,500 dead and 6,340 taken prisoner; Polish losses 103 dead and 300 taken prisoner; German losses about 1,500 dead and 2,000 wounded or missing. Of about 2,500 men in the perimeter, 2,163 crossed the Rhine on the night of 25 to 26 September. The fighting ran from 17 to 25 September 1944.

The bridge

The road bridge over the Nederrijn was built between 1932 and 1935 and opened in 1935; it is 601 metres long with a longest span of 120 metres. British troops held its northern end from 17 to 25 September 1944. It was destroyed on 7 October 1944 by British and American air attack, rebuilt in 1949 and usable from 1950, and renamed after Lieutenant-Colonel John Dutton Frost on 16 September 1978.

The park and the zoo

The Veluwezoom: 5,000 hectares, given in the same entry as 50 square kilometres; declared the first national park in the Netherlands in 1930; managed by Natuurmonumenten; highest point Signaal Imbosch at 109.9 metres, also the highest point of Gelderland. Burgers' Zoo: founded 1913 by Johan Burgers, moved to Arnhem in 1923, 45 hectares, 1,074,594 visitors in 2024 and 1,100,000 in 2019.

Modern Age Coders has no connection to the municipality, the park, the zoo or any school named here, and claims none. The 1944 figures are quoted because they are the best-documented numbers this city has and because the people behind them deserve arithmetic that is done properly.

1. Establish the population

About 5,200 British troops landed on 17 September and about 1,900 on 18 September, so the force this page reasons about is roughly 7,100 men. Every figure that follows has to be checked against that ceiling before it is used, and the learner writes the check first.

2. Add the outcomes and watch it break

About 1,500 dead plus 6,340 prisoners is 7,840, already 740 more than landed. Add the 2,163 who crossed the Rhine and the total is 10,003, an excess of 2,903 over the force, 41 percent more men than were ever there. No individual number is disputed.

3. Find where the sets touch

The learner lists the reasons the sum overshoots, and none of them is dishonesty: a man wounded and then captured belongs to two tallies; men who died in captivity may sit in both; the prisoner count runs past 25 September while the landing count stops on 18 September; the Polish troops are tallied separately at 103 and 300; and the 30,000 figure covers a wider operation entirely. Different populations, different windows, one addition.

Before you add, prove the categories are disjoint and share one population

Addition assumes two things that data almost never guarantees: that no case belongs to both categories, and that both categories are drawn from the same set of people over the same period. Here neither holds. A soldier who was wounded, captured and later died can be inside three of these tallies at once, and the evacuation figure has a denominator of about 2,500 rather than 7,100. The overshoot of 2,903 is therefore information, not error: it is the record telling you that these columns were compiled for different purposes. The right response is not to pick the number you like but to say which population each figure describes and to stop adding across them. Every figure above is quoted from its source, the two landing figures are the only ones this page sums, and the table was built before this paragraph was written. These were people, and that is precisely why the arithmetic has to be honest.

Reliable pipeline

Five habits for any set of totals you are tempted to add

Customers by channel, patients by diagnosis, students by programme, incidents by cause, users by device: real categories overlap constantly, and the plus sign does not warn you. Practised on the record this city knows best.

Then the stretch: given only these figures, what is the widest and narrowest number of men who could have been both wounded and captured?

For adults

The same discipline on a report from work in which category totals exceed the headline: channels, causes, product lines, patient groups. Adults nearly always find at least one dashboard whose segments sum past 100 percent and a colleague who has stopped mentioning it.

An AI will add the casualty figures for you without blinking. Why should a child in Arnhem learn to stop it?

Because every one of those numbers is correctly sourced, and the sum of them is nonsense, and nothing in the arithmetic announces that.

Give a tool the four tallies and ask for a total and it will produce one, promptly and politely, because addition is defined on numbers and it has four numbers. It has no way of knowing from the digits alone that a wounded prisoner sits in two of them, that one figure has a denominator of 2,500 rather than 7,100, or that the 30,000 covers a different area. Those facts live in the definitions, not in the values, and definitions are what get stripped away when a figure is copied into a cell.

So the learner writes the version that keeps them. Not because the syntax is hard, but because storing a number together with the population it describes and the window it covers, and refusing to add across a mismatch, is a design decision a person has to make and then defend. A fourteen-year-old in Elden who has done that here will do it with channel totals at twenty-four and with patient groups at thirty-four, and will be the one who asks what the denominator was. The tools will keep improving at arithmetic. They will not start knowing what your columns mean.

The case for an Arnhem child learning to code in 2026 is therefore not that they will work in archives. It is that numbers arrive stripped of their definitions, that adding them anyway is the commonest mistake in professional life, and that the habit of asking whose members these are is best learned once, carefully, on a record that matters.
