Most searches for coding classes for children assume there is one product. There are three, and mixing them up is why so many bright ten year olds end up bored by a subject they were briefly excited about. This page sets out what a six year old, a nine year old and a twelve year old should actually be doing, what each stage cannot give them, and the transition around age nine that decides whether a child keeps going.

In short
Modern Age Coders teaches children in Nassau aged six to twelve in live online weekly classes, in batches of five to eight or one to one. Younger children start with block-based work and small amounts of typed Python alongside it; by about ten the emphasis moves to typed code, reading error messages and building something that runs. Placement is decided by a task in the free first class rather than by age. Sessions are ninety minutes on weekend mornings in Bahamian time. Group teaching is USD 100 a month, private USD 150, and the first class is free.
The question behind the search
These three ages want completely different things, and a programme that treats them as one audience is either boring the older children or losing the younger ones.

The row that parents find most useful is the last column. Every stage has a ceiling, and the ceiling is not a failure of the stage: it is the point at which continuing to do the same thing stops adding anything. A nine year old who has been dragging blocks for three years is not further ahead than one who started last term, and that is the single most common thing we see in first classes.
The moment that matters
Somewhere between about eight and ten there is a transition that decides whether a child keeps going with this subject or quietly drifts away from it.
Block environments were a genuinely great invention. They removed spelling from programming and let a six year old build a working thing on the first afternoon, which is exactly what a six year old needs. Nobody sensible argues against them at that age.
The problem is that they also remove the two experiences a programmer is actually made of. A block cannot be misspelled, so a child never learns that a computer is unforgiving in a precise and knowable way. And a block program rarely produces a readable error, so a child never learns that an error message is a sentence written to help them.
Typed code restores both, and it costs something: the first weeks are slower and more frustrating than dragging. That trade is worth making somewhere around nine, and it is much harder to make at fourteen, because by then a child has three or four years of evidence that programming means dragging and feels betrayed by the change.
So our answer is small amounts of typing early, alongside the blocks rather than instead of them. A child of eight writing three lines of Python that draw a square has met the whole relationship, and will not experience the transition as a demotion when it comes.

For Nassau parents specifically
Our teachers are in India, nine and a half to ten and a half hours ahead, so a four o'clock Tuesday in Nassau is half past two in the morning for them. We do not offer it. Saturday at eight works beautifully at both ends.
Shorter than that and a child spends the session getting started; longer and the last part is wasted. Once a week with something to build in between beats three short sessions with nothing between them.
Five to eight children at a similar level, hearing each other get the same thing wrong in different ways, learn faster than one child alone. That is why one to one is not automatically the premium option at this age.
Older students keep a public GitHub repository. For a child, no personal information, no photographs and no real names of other people go anywhere near it, and a parent knows the account exists.
A few hundred words in plain English: what was covered, what your child found hard, what they built and what would help next. Not a dashboard and not a score out of ten.
The whole design assumes twelve months with the same teacher. A holiday camp is a good purchase for discovery and a poor one for accumulation, which is argued properly on its own page.
How to compare providers
This market is noisy and a parent has no easy way to see behind a course title. These five questions separate a programme from an activity, and we are happy to be held to our own answers.
If the answer is blocks indefinitely, the ceiling arrives around ten. Ours: small amounts of typed Python from about eight or nine, alongside blocks rather than replacing them.
Rotating instructors mean nobody remembers what happened last month, which is where most of the value in a long programme lives. Ours: the same person for the twelve months.
A certificate at the end is not progress reporting. Ours: a few hundred words in plain English every month on what was covered, what was hard and what would help next.
If the answer is a folder or a certificate, ask what a stranger could open. Ours: something running at a public address, with the code readable and a year of dated commits behind it.
The question nobody asks and the one that predicts whether a schedule survives. For an overseas provider a four o'clock local slot may be the middle of their night. Ours: a Nassau Saturday morning is early evening for the teacher, which is why we offer it and not weekday afternoons.
None of those five is about how advanced the material is. They are all about whether the thing is a continuous programme or a series of pleasant afternoons, and both exist in this market.

Questions from parents of younger children
Six is our floor and it is a real floor rather than a marketing one. Below that, most children do not yet have the reading and mouse control to get value from a ninety-minute session, and the honest advice is to wait a year. At six to eight the work is a game with rules the child can change, and the aim is that making a computer do something feels normal to them rather than remarkable.
It starts in the same place and it does not stay there. Blocks are an excellent on-ramp and a poor destination, because a block cannot be misspelled and rarely produces a readable error, so a child never meets the two experiences programming actually consists of. We introduce small amounts of typed Python from around eight or nine, alongside the blocks rather than instead of them, so the transition is not experienced as a demotion later.
No, and the reason is arithmetic rather than preference. Our teachers are in India, nine and a half to ten and a half hours ahead of the Bahamas depending on the season, so four in the afternoon in Nassau is half past two in the morning at their end. We will not staff that. Weekend mornings are the main offer and they suit most families here better anyway.
A group batch of five to eight students is USD 100 a month and one to one teaching is USD 150 a month, billed in US dollars, the same flat figures everywhere outside India. There is no enrolment fee, no annual contract, and the first class is free without a card.
Usually not, which is the opposite of what most families expect. At this age a good deal of the learning comes from hearing five other children attack the same problem badly before somebody gets it right, and a child alone with a teacher misses all of that. One to one is the right answer for a specific reason, such as a weekday morning slot or a learning need, and those reasons are set out on their own page.
Then we would rather you stopped than kept paying. There is no minimum term and no enrolment fee, so stopping costs you the month you are in. What we do first is change the project rather than the child: nearly every case of a bored nine year old we have seen was a child working on somebody else's idea, and letting them choose something they can check the answer to fixes it more often than not.
Some, deliberately. A good deal of early computational thinking is arguing about the order of steps, predicting what a program will do before running it, and explaining out loud why something failed. None of that needs a screen and all of it transfers. For younger children it is also a useful break in the middle of ninety minutes.
Not at this age without you knowing. Older students keep a public GitHub repository because that is the asset the whole programme builds toward, and for anybody under eighteen the rules are firm: no personal information, no photographs, no real names of other people, and a parent aware of the account. For a six or eight year old the work usually stays private entirely.
A written note each month in plain English, and the thing itself. By the end of the first quarter a child should be able to show you something they made and tell you what each part does, which is a far better test than any grade we could invent. If they can show it and not explain it, we would treat that as our problem to fix.
A mentor telephones you at a Bahamian hour to arrange the free session. Nothing is charged and no card is requested. Sending the form starts a conversation rather than an enrolment and reserves no place. Which entry point suits your child, and which weekend slot, are settled on that call before money comes up.

The free first session is a lesson, not a sales call. A child is given one problem pitched at their age and the teacher watches how they go at it rather than whether they finish, which in fifteen minutes tells us more than a form would in a page. Where the honest answer is that a six year old should wait a year, or that a ten year old is ready for considerably more than you expected, that is what you will be told.
