Features decide

Similar is a choice, not a fact

Any claim that one thing is like another hides two decisions: like in what, and measured how. A recommendation engine, a face-matching system and a list of comparable towns all make those decisions, usually without saying so. The honest report names the features, names the scaling, and says how stable the answer is when either changes. "Castlebar's twin is Ballina" overstates it. "Ballina is among the five closest towns in seven of eight set-ups" is something the data actually supports.

The learner describes every town as a list of numbers, one per feature, then measures the straight-line distance between Castlebar's list and each other town's, and sorts. Scaling is one extra step: subtract each feature's average across the 94 towns and divide by its spread, so every feature is measured in the same currency. A loop runs all four feature sets both ways and tallies how often each town appears. That tally, not any one list, goes in the report. The same code, with a few more lines, becomes a k-nearest-neighbours classifier, one of the first machine-learning methods most courses teach.
