Bezuidenhout is a wijk of young adults: 8,115 of its 19,254 residents are between twenty-five and forty-five, 42 percent, with only 12 percent under fifteen and 12 percent over sixty-five. The Benoordenhout is the reverse, 4,155 residents over sixty-five at 27 percent against 3,130 aged twenty-five to forty-five. Mariahoeve en Marlot sits between them at 31 and 21 percent.

The Haagse Bos is a wijk in the administrative sense and a forest in every other. Its 486 residents are about one percent of the stadsdeel, its 419 dwellings about one and a half percent of the 27,986, and it has no primary establishment at all. The precision tracks the size of the number, not the confidence in it. Every digit you print is an assertion that you know the quantity to that resolution, and readers believe it, because there is no other convention available to them. That is the whole difficulty: precision and accuracy look identical on a screen. A number computed from two reliable counts and a number computed from two guesses come out of the same formatter with the same number of decimal places, in the same font, and no reader can tell them apart without opening the source. So the burden has to be taken up deliberately by whoever is printing, and it almost never is, because the defaults are against you. A language will hand you fifteen significant figures for a division that deserved two. A spreadsheet will carry every one of them into the next cell. A dashboard will render them because they arrived. Nothing in the pipeline asks the only question that matters, which is what would have to happen in the world to change the last digit, and if the answer is one family moving house, or one late row arriving, or the same query being run four minutes later, then that digit is not a fact, it is a residue. You will publish figures that look less authoritative and you will be right more often, and in a long enough career those two things stop feeling like a trade.

Hand a model a table and it will carry the digits through faithfully, which sounds like a virtue and is the problem. It will write that 3.09 percent of the Haagse Bos is under fifteen, and it will be quoting correctly, and the sentence will be misleading in a way that no fact-check can catch, because every character of it matches the source. It will not add that the figure rests on fifteen children, that one family moving changes it, or that the neighbouring wijken get their shares to one decimal place or none. Nor will it notice that a stadsdeel total for 2022 exists in two published versions 534 people apart, because it will have seen whichever one was nearer to hand and had no reason to look for a second.
So the learner practises going the other way, from the printed figure back to what it rests on, and the cheapest place to build that habit is code, where the machine will happily hand over fifteen significant figures for a division that deserved two and never once mention it. A fifteen-year-old in Mariahoeve who has had to write a function that refuses to print a digit it cannot justify will be the person at thirty who looks at a dashboard tile reading 12.7 percent and asks how many rows that came from before anyone acts on it. Models will keep reproducing precision because precision is what is in the text. Asking what it rests on stays a person job.
The case for a child in Haagse Hout learning to code in 2026 is therefore not about statistics. It is that a computer will give you as many digits as you ask for and take no view whatever on whether you were entitled to them, and learning that early, on something small, is worth a great deal later.
