The national register held 162,683 people on 1 January 2026, in 81,938 households averaging 1.94 people, on 140.73 square kilometres of land inside 142.72 of territory: a published 1,153 residents to the square kilometre. In 1995 the count was 148,034, so Enschede has gained 14,649 people in thirty-one years, a rise of 9.9 percent, the smallest of any city on this site.

More young adults than children

25,987 residents are between fifteen and twenty-five, 16 percent, against 21,778 under fifteen, 13 percent; 43,705 are between twenty-five and forty-five and 30,850 are sixty-five or over. 39,237 households hold one person, 48 percent. Textiles, and then not

Two dates that both mark a beginning

The University of Twente was founded in 1961 and opened on 14 September 1964 by Queen Juliana; it describes itself as the largest campus university in the Netherlands. Saxion, the university of applied sciences, was formed by merger in 1998 and teaches in Enschede, Deventer and Apeldoorn. The city itself received city rights around 1300, confirmed in 1325 by bishop Jan van Diest.

The campus, north-west

The University of Twente sits on its own grounds outside the built-up city, which is what the phrase campus university means here and why the student population is less visible in the streets than in Groningen or Nijmegen.

Glanerbrug

East, hard against the German border, effectively continuous with the settlement on the other side. A village with its own schools whose nearest large city in one direction is not in this country.

Boekelo and Usselo

South-west, out among the fields towards Haaksbergen. Village primary schools, a bus for secondary, and no realistic prospect of an evening club forming for a handful of interested children.

Lonneker and Twekkelo

North and west, the countryside inside the municipal boundary. Lonneker was a separate municipality until the twentieth century and still reads as a village rather than a district.

The post-war districts

The rings of housing built while the mills were still running and emptied of their industry afterwards. This is where most of the 48 percent single-person households are, and where the city's slow growth is most visible.

Placement runs on stage alone, so a learner from any of the ten wijken or any of the villages can end up in the same group, and the German boundary a short walk from Glanerbrug is irrelevant to every part of it.

The fire of 1862

A fire beginning on 7 May 1862 in a house on the Kalanderstraat destroyed the entire historic centre inside the moats. Two people died and 650 families were left without a home. One source gives the town a population of approximately 4,000 at the time; another gives about 4,500 with 3,675 people made homeless. All of those figures are printed here and none is combined with another.

The explosion of 2000

On 13 May 2000 at about 15:35 a fireworks depot exploded: 23 people died, four of them firefighters, and nearly a thousand were injured. 200 homes were destroyed and about 1,500 badly damaged, 1,250 people were displaced, and about 42 hectares of Roombeek were laid waste. Damage was put at roughly a billion guilders, given elsewhere as 454 million euro.

Both produce a number, neither has any support in the sources, and the second is worse because it looks principled. The right output is a range: somewhere between none and all of the 27,505 are in Enschede, and the record read here narrows it no further.

3. Say what would settle it

A campus-level enrolment breakdown, or a figure for students living in the municipality, or a published headcount for the Enschede site. The learner writes that sentence into the output, because a result that names its missing input is useful and a result that guesses is not.

An aggregate cannot be pushed down to its parts without a published split

This is one of the most common quiet fabrications in professional work. A group reports one revenue figure and somebody needs it by country; a chain reports one headcount and somebody needs it by branch; an institution reports one enrolment and somebody needs it by campus. Dividing equally is obviously arbitrary. Dividing in proportion to something else, population or floor space or last year's share, feels rigorous and is still an assumption dressed as a method, because the thing being allocated may not follow that pattern at all. The honest output is a bound plus a sentence naming the datum that would close it. A learner who has once refused to produce 9,168 will refuse a great many plausible numbers later, which is a more valuable habit than any syntax. Ask an AI how many students are in Enschede and it will give you a number. Why should a child here learn that there isn't one?

Because four figures are available, they count four different things, and the most quotable of them covers three cities.

A tool asked this question will assemble something plausible, most likely by adding an institutional enrolment to another institutional enrolment, or by quoting the larger figure alone. Neither move is careless in the ordinary sense; both follow from treating numbers as interchangeable once they share a unit. What is missing is not arithmetic but bookkeeping: which population, which place, which date. Those fields are usually absent from the text a model reads, and absent fields cannot be checked.

So the learner builds the record that carries them and the function that refuses. The value is not in the code, which is short, but in the moment of deciding that no answer is better than an invented one, and then writing down what would produce a real answer. All instruction happens in English. Four Dutch words are deliberately left alone, groep and havo and vwo and profielkeuze, since a child has to recognise them on a real timetable. Nothing gets converted between the two languages.
