Every earlier math year rewarded computing: follow the method, get the number, collect the points. Geometry changes the question. "Prove these triangles are congruent" has no number at the end, it demands an argument, each step justified, written in a strange two-column costume. Strong computers who never learned to reason from reasons hit a wall that feels personal: "I used to be good at math."
The reverse also happens, and it is one of our favorite things to watch: verbal, argumentative kids who found equations tedious discover that Geometry is their sport. Either way, the year rewards a skill school rarely teaches explicitly: constructing a chain of because.
The quieter tenth-grade trap is algebra rust. Geometry uses algebra constantly, similar-triangle ratios, coordinate proofs, circle equations, while giving it no dedicated practice, so skills decay exactly when Algebra 2 is about to demand them sharper than ever. Sophomores also meet the PSAT in October, the first taste of the testing years.

What 10th grade math actually covers.
Most tenth graders take Geometry; accelerated students take Algebra 2 (covered on our 11th grade page). The Geometry map:

A proof, taught as detective work first.
Prove: triangle ABE is congruent to triangle CDE.
Mentor: "Do not write anything. Just tell me: what do you KNOW, and why?"
Teen: "Two pairs of equal sides… and those angles at E are vertical, so they match!"
Mentor: "So what pins the triangles together?" → "Side, angle, side. SAS!"
Then, and only then, the two-column table gets written, as a transcript of an argument the teen already made aloud. The notation stops being the monster; it is just minutes of a meeting that already happened.
This order, detective work first, notation second, is the entire trick of teaching proof, and it is nearly impossible in a class of thirty where the notation must be graded tomorrow. One term of it and your teen starts seeing given-to-goal paths on sight, the skill that later makes SAT hard questions and AP free-responses feel navigable.

Everything families ask about 10th grade math tutoring.
My teen was strong in algebra and is failing Geometry. How is that possible?
Because Geometry grades a different skill: constructing arguments rather than executing procedures. Strong computers who never practiced reasoning-from-reasons hit exactly this wall, and it says nothing about their ceiling. Proof is teachable, argue aloud first, notate second, and the wall usually falls within a unit or two of the right teaching.
Do proofs even matter, or can we just survive the unit?
They matter more than the unit: proof is the training ground for the justify-your-reasoning skill that SAT hard questions, AP free-responses and every technical field run on. Surviving on template proofs wastes the year's real gift. That said, we are practical, your teen's grade gets protected while the deeper skill builds.
Should a sophomore take the PSAT seriously?
Seriously as information, calmly as an event: the sophomore PSAT is a free diagnostic of the test genre with no stakes attached. Junior-year PSAT is the one with National Merit implications. We use October's result to shape the SAT runway, and that is its whole job.
When should SAT prep actually start?
For most students: the summer after 10th grade or early junior year, aiming at a spring-of-junior-year first sitting. Sophomore-year foundations, algebra kept warm, reasoning built, ARE the early prep. Our SAT Math 800 course takes over when the calendar says so.
