Where does the best online Python learning start for someone in Nowra?
With a live teacher and projects on real data, so speed and correctness both get tested rather than assumed. The Nowra and Bomaderry urban area counted 38,678 residents in 2021. Classes happen live over video, privately or with a few classmates at the same level, and the first session costs nothing.
NSW publishes a master file of its public schools, 2,210 of them, each with its own school code. Ask Python whether a code is on a list and it checks the list from the front, one item at a time. Ask the same question of a set and it jumps almost straight to the answer. Our Nowra learners time both on samples of 125, 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 codes, doubling each time. The list approach slows by about four times at every step; the set slows by about two, because the number of questions doubles too. By 2,000 codes the list takes 53 milliseconds and the set a fifth of one.

Defence was the largest single industry of employment, with 1,021 residents or 6.5% of workers, against 0.6% across New South Wales.
Only 384 dwellings, 2.7%, were flats or apartments, compared with 21.7% statewide.
The urban area counted 2,257 people aged 15 to 19 and 2,296 aged 20 to 24.
The ABS slightly perturbs small census cells for privacy, so table parts need not add up to published totals. We print each figure as published and never construct a total ourselves.
NSW public school codes from the Department of Education master file, looked up in a Python list and in a Python set.
| Codes in the sample | List comparisons | List time | Set time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 125 | 7,875 | 0.18 ms | 0.012 ms |
| 250 | 31,375 | 0.72 ms | 0.024 ms |

| 2,000 | 2,001,000 | 53.32 ms | 0.206 ms |
Instead of guessing how code scales, run it at one size, double the input, run it again and divide the two times. The ratio tells you more than either time alone.
Each lookup scans on average half the list, and there are twice as many lookups, so the work multiplies by close to four with each doubling: from 7,875 comparisons to 2,001,000.
A set finds each code by its hash in roughly constant time, so doubling the questions roughly doubles the time and no more.
Run the experiment again and the milliseconds change, because a laptop is never doing only one thing. The ratios hold steady: the list moved by 3.90, 4.12, 4.32 and 4.18 times across the four doublings, the set by 2.05, 2.20, 1.78 and 2.16. That is the point of a doubling experiment. It measures the shape of the growth, which survives noise, rather than a single speed, which does not.
The Shoalhaven council area has 30 public schools in the file, 23 primary, 5 secondary and 2 schools for specific purposes. At that size the list is fast enough for anything a person would notice. The difference only shows when the data grows, which is exactly when a program written without the habit starts to hurt.
Practised on the school codes, then used on any program a learner wants to speed up.
| Rule | How | What it prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat and take the minimum | timeit with several repeats | One slow run caused by the system |
| Count operations as well | Comparisons counted in the code | Mistaking noise for a real change |
| Double, do not just enlarge | Sizes 125, 250, 500 and so on | Ratios that cannot be read cleanly |
| Fix the random sample | A seeded shuffle | Results nobody can reproduce |
| Report the machine | Python version and device | Comparing numbers that are not comparable |
Counting comparisons is the steady half of the experiment: 2,001,000 at a sample of 2,000 is exact arithmetic, n times n plus one over two, and it will be the same on any computer. The milliseconds are the noisy half. Learners report both and explain why they disagree slightly.
Run the doubling table, plot the two curves and explain the factor of four in plain words.
Big O notation, hashing and profiling, tied to measurements rather than to definitions alone.
Spot the list lookup inside a loop in a slow report script and replace it with a set or dictionary.
Modern Age Coders is independent of the NSW Department of Education and the ABS. The school codes are the department's and the census figures the bureau's; every count and timing above is our own measurement.
A few local details that affect when Nowra learners study.
The NSW Department of Education calendar runs Term 4 from Tuesday 13 October to Thursday 17 December 2026.
Next year Term 2 runs from Thursday 29 April to Friday 2 July 2027, according to the same calendar.
Daylight saving in NSW starts on the opening Sunday of October and ends on the opening Sunday of April, per the IANA zone file for Sydney.
Lesson times stay in Nowra time
India does not change its clocks, so the gap is four and a half hours in winter and five and a half in summer. We fix lessons in Nowra time and our teachers absorb the shift.

Ask an assistant to check which school codes from one list appear in another and it often writes a loop with "if code in other_list". On 30 Shoalhaven schools that finishes instantly and passes every test. On larger files the same line multiplies its work by four each time the data doubles, and nothing in the code or the tests says so.
Our Nowra learners run a doubling experiment on whatever an assistant writes before they rely on it. When the ratio comes out near four, they know to ask for a set or a dictionary, and they can explain why the suggestion is better.
An assistant can write the faster version in a second, but a Nowra learner who has watched a list slow down fourfold knows to ask for it, and that judgement is learnt by writing code in 2026. The longer argument is in whether learning to code still pays off in 2026.
Both sides of the Shoalhaven River are the same distance from an online lesson.

We set a first task to match: building and searching a small list for a Year 8 beginner, the doubling experiment for a Year 11 student, or profiling a slow script for an adult.
What Nowra and Bomaderry families usually ask first.
The urban area counted 38,678 residents at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 39.
A doubling experiment runs a program at one input size, then at twice that size, and divides the two running times. A ratio near 2 suggests the work grows in line with the data; a ratio near 4 suggests it grows with the square of the data.
A list is checked item by item from the front, so a lookup can take as many steps as the list is long. A set stores items by their hash, so it can go almost directly to the right place whatever its size.
Learners take samples of 125 to 2,000 codes from the NSW public schools master file, look every code up in a list and in a set, and record comparisons and times. The list work rises about fourfold with each doubling and the set work about twofold.
Yes. HSC students fit weekly Python around their subjects, with breaks planned against NSW terms. Assessed school work stays entirely the student's own.

No, and none is claimed. All teaching is live and online, with no premises anywhere in Australia. A learner needs a laptop or desktop, working sound and a reliable connection, and the contact number shown is an Indian one.
The first lesson is free. After that a group place is USD 100 a month for two live lessons a week, around eight a month, with fifteen to twenty learners, or USD 150 a month for the same pattern one to one. Course, format and time are agreed before anything is paid.
Fifteen to twenty learners, matched on level, pace and what they want to build rather than on age or suburb. If no suitable group meets at a workable time, one-to-one lessons are offered instead.
Up the coast there is a Wollongong coding classes page and coding classes in Sydney. HSC students can read HSC Software Engineering help, while the whole-state overview lives at coding and AI classes in New South Wales.
