Scotland runs its own exams, so a tutor who only knows GCSE and A level is the wrong buy. National 5 is usually sat in S4 and Higher in S5 or S6, awarded by Qualifications Scotland, the body that replaced SQA. Below: published rates with a source for each, what moves the price in Scotland, and a planning guide to the hours an exam year needs.

What moves the price of maths tuition in Scotland
National 5 or Higher
Higher covers calculus, vectors and logarithms, so tutors who teach it confidently are fewer and charge a little more than for National 5.
City or town
Face-to-face rates follow local demand. In the guide we read, Edinburgh's average sits about $8 an hour above Glasgow's.In the guide we read, Edinburgh's face-to-face average sits above Glasgow's. Online lessons cost the same wherever you live.
Rural distance
Outside the cities a specialist Higher tutor may be an hour's drive away. Online removes the travel charge and widens the choice.
Prelim season
Many schools run prelims in the winter before the spring exams, and demand for tutors climbs with them. Starting in the autumn of S4 or S5 gives more choice.
Knowing the Scottish course
A tutor who knows GCSE but not National 5 will spend paid time learning your course. Ask what they have taught in Scotland.
Group or individual
A matched group shares the tutor's hour, which is why a month of group lessons costs less. The trade is less time on one pupil's mistakes.
How many hours of tuition does a Scottish exam year need?
What our tutors usually suggest after a first lesson. Planning numbers, not a promise; practice between lessons decides the result.
| Situation | Typical plan | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| One weak topic before the prelim | one lesson a week for six weeks | about 6 |
| Steady support through S4 for National 5 | one lesson a week from August to April | about 32 |
| Higher in S5, including the step to calculus | one lesson a week from August, two from January | about 45 |
| Advanced Higher in S6 | one lesson a week across the year | about 32 |
We count roughly 32 teaching weeks between August and the spring exams. This is our own arithmetic, not a Qualifications Scotland figure.
What that means in money (our arithmetic): at the Higher average of about $47 an hour, 45 hours costs about $2,115. A one-to-one lesson with us costs $18.75 and a group place $12.50, with the same tutor all year.
How to judge a maths tutor in Scotland
- Have they taught National 5 or Higher, not only GCSE or A level?
- Do they work from the past papers and marking instructions for your level?
- Will they read the pupil's last prelim or class test before teaching?
- Is it the same tutor every week up to the exam?
- Is there a first lesson you can watch first?
- Are there joining fees or prepaid blocks on top of the rate?
- Will they tell you honestly whether a pupil is ready for Higher?
- Will they decline to promise a grade? Nobody honest can.
Group or one-to-one for National 5 and Higher?
A small group suits a pupil who
- keeps up in class and wants more practice
- likes hearing other pupils' questions
- wants the lowest monthly cost
Groups hold 15 to 20 pupils at a similar level.
One-to-one suits a pupil who
- is moving up to Higher and finding calculus hard
- has a prelim coming and specific gaps
- is anxious about maths in a class
One pupil, one tutor and their own past papers.

Maths tuition costs in Scotland: questions families ask
How much does a maths tutor cost per hour in Scotland?
It depends on the level, the tutor's experience and whether lessons are online or face to face. The rates table lists the published figures we found, each with its source and the exchange rate used.
Is a Higher maths tutor more expensive than a National 5 tutor?
A little, in the national figures we read, because Higher brings in calculus, vectors and logarithms and fewer tutors teach it confidently.
Who awards National 5 and Higher maths now?
Qualifications Scotland, which replaced SQA. The course structure and past papers families know remain the reference for teaching.
Do you teach the Scottish course rather than GCSE?
Yes. Pupils in Scotland are taught to National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher, using past papers for their level. See our National 5 page.
When should tuition start before the exams?
For a full exam year, the autumn term gives time to fix gaps before prelims. A pupil who understands the content but needs exam practice can start later.
Is online maths tuition common in rural Scotland?
It is a practical choice where a specialist Higher tutor would mean a long drive. Online lessons use a shared whiteboard and the pupil's own papers.
Are there extra fees with you?
No. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end.
Can we try a lesson first?
Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. For a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo: a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes with a written skill report. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.
Why are prices shown in US dollars?
We teach families in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so the page uses one currency. Market figures from Scotland were converted at one stated exchange rate.
See what a lesson is worth before you pay for a month.
Bring a recent prelim or class test. In the free first lesson the tutor shows where marks are going and what a term would fix. No card needed.
