Maths tutor or tuition centre in the UK: cost and how each works
Short answer: on published prices, centres sell monthly memberships and tutors sell hours. A Kumon maths subject at the centres we read costs about $93 to $104 a month plus a joining fee; Explore Learning's maths group memberships start at about $164 a month; a private online maths tutor averages about $47 an hour. They teach in very different ways, which matters more than the price. Our live classes are $100 a month in a small group or $150 a month one-to-one.

A worksheet programme, a centre with tutors and a learning tool, a private tutor and a live online class are four different products. This page compares their published fees, explains what each actually does in a session, and says plainly which child each one suits. For one-to-one brand comparisons, see Modern Age Coders vs Kumon and vs Mathnasium.
What a month of live classes contains

Four models, four different products
A worksheet programme
Kumon's centre pages describe "Daily worksheets designed for at home and in-centre learning". The child works through graded sheets, mostly on their own, and an instructor checks progress. It builds speed and habit; it is not lesson-by-lesson teaching of a school syllabus.
A tuition centre with tutors
Explore Learning sells memberships of group or one-to-one sessions, in centre or online, with maths and English, SATs, 11 plus and GCSE options listed on its pricing page.
A private tutor
One adult teaches one child, usually by the hour. Quality varies more than anywhere else: the right tutor is excellent, the wrong one is expensive.
A live online class
What we run: a tutor teaching live on a shared whiteboard, in a matched group of 15 to 20 or one-to-one, to the child's level and exam board, with the same tutor each week.
Homework load
Worksheet programmes expect daily work at home. Tutors and classes vary; ask how much practice is set and who checks it.
Who decides the content
A programme follows its own sequence. A tutor or class should follow your child's school course and exam board. Ask which you are buying.
The costs parents tend to miss
Joining fees. Kumon centres charge a one-off fee before starting; the three we read charge about $53 to $65.Some centres charge a one-off fee before starting.
Per-subject pricing. Kumon prices each subject separately, so maths and English together cost two monthly fees.
Siblings. Explore Learning publishes a discount of about $13 off the monthly membership for a second child and about $26 for a third. Some centres discount a second and third child.
Travel. A centre visit twice a week is two return journeys. Online lessons have none.
Contract terms. Explore Learning, for example, collects its membership by Direct Debit on the 1st of each month. Read the notice period before signing.
With us: no enrolment fee, no contract, one price whatever the subject level, and you can stop at any month end.
Which suits which child?
A centre or worksheet programme may suit a child who
- needs a daily practice habit more than new teaching
- is primary age and works well independently
- lives near a centre you can reach easily
Worksheet routines build fluency; they are not designed to teach an exam board's syllabus lesson by lesson.
A tutor or live class suits a child who
- needs a topic taught, not just practised
- is preparing for SATs, the 11 plus, GCSE or A level
- needs a teacher who can see and question their working
With us: a live tutor, matched groups or one-to-one, the same face every week.

Tutor or tuition centre: questions parents ask
Is a tuition centre cheaper than a private maths tutor?
It depends on the unit you compare. Centres sell monthly memberships with set sessions and tutors sell hours. The fees table lists the published prices for each.
What is the difference between Kumon and a maths tutor?
Kumon is a worksheet programme: the child works through graded sheets daily, mostly independently, with an instructor checking progress. A tutor teaches topics directly and should follow the child's school course. See our Kumon comparison.
Do tuition centres follow the school curriculum?
Some do and some follow their own sequence. Explore Learning says its maths and English tuition is aligned with the curriculum; worksheet programmes follow their own levels. Ask before joining.
Are there joining fees at tuition centres?
Often. Kumon centres list a one-off fee on their pages. Check each centre's fee panel and notice period before signing.
Is online tuition an alternative to a centre?
Yes. Live online classes give taught lessons without the journey. Our online vs face-to-face guide compares the formats.
Which is better for the 11 plus, a centre or a tutor?
Whichever teaches your area's test format with timed practice and checks your child's working. Our 11 plus pages describe each area's test.
Are there extra fees with you?
No. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end.
Can my child try a lesson first?
Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. For a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo; if you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.
Why are prices in US dollars?
We teach families in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so the page uses one currency. UK fees were converted at one stated exchange rate.
Compare a live lesson with what you have tried before.
Many families come to us after a worksheet programme. In the free first lesson a tutor teaches your child a topic live and tells you what they noticed. No card needed.
