How much does a maths tutor cost in Australia?
Short answer: it depends mostly on the format and the tutor. The Australian Tutoring Association says teacher-trained tutors typically charge in a range that works out at about USD 38 to USD 126 an hour, while published one-to-one online sessions sit at about USD 60 to 69 an hour and a centre's recommended session price at about USD 54. Our live online maths lessons cost $100 a month in US dollars in a small group or $150 a month one to one, for eight one-hour lessons: $12.50 or $18.75 a lesson.

The maths courses behind the price
A rate only means something next to what it buys. These are the courses Australian families most often choose, each taught live by a teacher who reads your child's working, not just the final answer. Every price on this page is in US dollars.

What maths tutoring costs in Australia: published rates
These are the Australian figures we could read directly at their source, converted to US dollars so the page shows one currency. Tutors and providers set their own prices, so treat these as published examples, not a full survey of the market.

Six things that change what a maths tutor costs
Teacher training
The Australian Tutoring Association separates teacher-trained tutors, who hold a degree in education, from tutors who are university students or graduates without one. Training is one of the biggest drivers of the hourly rate.
Primary or secondary
The Association notes that primary-trained teachers as tutors are typically paid less than secondary-trained ones. Senior maths, such as Year 11 and 12 courses, usually costs more than primary help.
One to one or a class
One-to-one sessions cost the family more; a class spreads the teacher across many students, so each pays less and gets less individual attention.
Where you live
The Association says rural rates are typically lower than urban ones. Online lessons take location out of the price altogether.
Experience and standing
Years of teaching and recognised professional contributions push rates up. The Association adds that simply attending workshops is not, of itself, a sign of professional contribution.
Exam pressure
Demand rises before senior exams and selective tests. Starting earlier, and spreading tuition over terms, usually costs less than an intensive burst at the end.
Factors summarised from the Australian Tutoring Association's guidance on tutor fees, read 7 October 2026.
What a school term of weekly maths tutoring comes to
Australian families budget by the term, so here are the published rates turned into a ten-week term of weekly one-hour sessions. Real terms run nine to eleven weeks depending on the state and the term.
| Option | Ten weekly one-hour sessions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Teacher-trained private tutor (published range) | About USD 380 to USD 1,260 | From the Association's typical range |
| Online one-to-one, standard plan | About USD 690 | Ten sessions at about USD 69 |
| Online one-to-one, four in advance | About USD 600 | Ten sessions at about USD 60 |
| Tutoring centre, recommended price | About USD 545 | Ten sessions at about USD 54 |
Our lessons over the same ten weeks: at two live lessons a week, a ten-week term holds 20 lessons. At $12.50 a lesson in a group, that is about USD 250 for the term; at $18.75 a lesson one to one, about USD 375. We bill by the month, not by the term, so a family that stops after four weeks pays for one month.
All term totals are our own arithmetic from the published rates above and our monthly price of eight lessons. Comparing sessions is approximate: session lengths, group sizes and what is included differ between providers.
A ten-week term, worked through: this section turns tutoring prices into an Australian school term for families there. Our maths plans are $100 a month in a group or $150 a month one to one, billed monthly and shown in your own currency.
The costs families tend to miss
Payment in advance. Some providers hold several sessions in advance on an ongoing basis. Cluey Learning's published schedule, for example, keeps two or four sessions paid ahead depending on the plan. Know how much is held and how it is refunded.
Notice periods. Ask how much notice you must give to cancel a session or a plan without being charged. A long notice period is a cost if your child's needs change.
Assessments and materials. Some centres offer a free first assessment; others charge for it, or for workbooks. Ask for the total first-term cost.
Travel. A weekly drive to a centre or a tutor's home adds time and fuel across a whole year, especially outside the capitals.
Exam-season surges. Extra sessions crammed in before tests cost more than steady weekly work spread over the year.
With us: no joining fee, no materials charge and no term contract. You pay month by month and can stop at the end of any month.
How to judge whether maths tuition is worth the money
- Does the tutor look at your child's working, or only mark the final answers?
- Can they name the specific ideas your child is missing, such as fractions with unrelated denominators?
- Is it the same tutor every week, who remembers what went wrong last time?
- How many students does the tutor teach at once?
- Is the total cost for a term clear, including anything paid in advance?
- What happens if your child is not benefiting after a few weeks?
- Can you watch a lesson?
- Will you get a progress report that names topics, not just a percentage?
Several of these echo questions the Australian Tutoring Association suggests parents ask any tutoring provider, read 7 October 2026.
Group or one to one, and which maths course?
Choose a small group if
- your child needs steady practice and routine more than one-off rescue
- they are at a similar level to others in their year
- you want the lowest monthly cost for weekly maths
Groups hold 15 to 20 learners at a similar level.
Choose one to one if
- there is one clear gap to close quickly
- your child is anxious about maths or far ahead
- a senior student has exams or a selective test coming
One learner, one teacher, and every minute spent on their gaps.

Maths tutor costs: what Australian parents ask
How much does a maths tutor cost in Australia?
It depends mostly on the format and the tutor. The Australian Tutoring Association publishes a typical range for teacher-trained tutors, and online and centre-based providers publish per-session prices; one-to-one lessons cost more than classes. The comparison table sets out the published figures we could read at their source.
Why do maths tutors charge such different rates?
The Australian Tutoring Association lists factors including whether the tutor is teacher-trained, primary or secondary trained, their experience and professional standing, and the area they work in, with rural rates typically lower than urban ones.
Is group maths tuition cheaper than one-to-one?
Usually, per child. The Association notes that one-to-one sessions tend to levy a higher fee, and that the individual fee may be significantly lower in a class. The trade-off is less individual attention.
Are there extra costs on top of the session fee?
Sometimes. Check whether sessions are paid in advance, the notice needed to cancel, assessment or materials fees and travel. With us there is no joining fee and no term contract.
How many hours of maths tutoring does a child need?
There is no fixed number. One or two hours a week through a term is common; a child closing one specific gap may need less, and a student preparing for senior exams may need more.
Why are your prices in US dollars?
We are an online school based in India teaching families in more than 25 countries, and we bill outside India in US dollars, so the page shows one currency throughout. Your card provider converts the charge into Australian dollars.
Can we try a maths lesson before paying?
Yes. The first maths lesson is free and needs no card. If you would rather have a lesson today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo: a full lesson of about 45 to 60 minutes. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.
See the teaching before you pay for any of it.
In the free first lesson the teacher runs a short check, works through a few problems with your child and tells you plainly which ideas are secure and which are not. No card needed.
