UK cost guide · KS2 and 11 plus maths · updated October 2026

How much does a KS2 or 11 plus maths tutor cost in the UK?

Short answer: primary maths tutors in the UK average about $37 an hour on the national figures we checked, with early-career tutors from about $26. 11 plus specialists charge more: listings on one large marketplace ran up to about $112 an hour, and one tuition chain's 11 plus group membership starts at about $251 a month. Our live primary maths classes are $100 a month in a small group or $150 a month one-to-one.

A Year 4 child practising times tables and a Year 5 child preparing for a grammar school test need very different help, and they are priced very differently. This guide separates the two, names the source of every market figure and shows what tuition a primary child typically needs.

Behind the number

What moves the price of primary maths tuition

SATs support or a selective test

Helping a child feel confident for the May SATs is everyday primary teaching. Preparing for a grammar school test is specialist work, and 11 plus tutors price it that way.

When the test falls

The 11 plus is usually sat early in Year 6, so demand for tutors peaks across Year 5. The SATs come in May of Year 6, and the multiplication tables check in June of Year 4.

Who is teaching

A cheerful graduate is often exactly right for a seven-year-old building confidence. An experienced 11 plus specialist who knows your area's test format costs more and is worth it later.

A centre or a tutor

Centres sell monthly memberships with set sessions; tutors sell hours. A membership looks dearer per month and can be cheaper per hour, so compare the same unit.

How long sessions run

Young children concentrate for shorter stretches. Some tutors sell 45-minute sessions at a lower price, which can suit a six- or seven-year-old better than a full hour.

Siblings

Some centres discount a second child. Explore Learning, for example, publishes about $13 off the monthly membership for a second child.

Our planning guide

How much tuition does a primary child need?

What our tutors usually suggest after a first lesson. These are planning numbers, not a promise; regular short practice at home matters as much as the lessons.

Before you pay anyone

What is free, and what families tend to miss

Past SATs papers are free. The Standards and Testing Agency publishes past KS2 test papers and mark schemes on gov.uk, so they should never be sold to you as a paid extra.

Registration fees. Some centres charge a one-off fee before the first session; the two Kumon centres we read charge about $59 and $65.

Prepaid blocks. Some tutors sell ten lessons upfront. Ask what happens to unused lessons if your child's timetable changes.

Travel. Two trips a week to a centre through Year 5 add up to a lot of afternoons. Online lessons happen at home.

Practice books. Most families buy a few. They are cheap; a tutor who insists on an expensive bundle is selling, not teaching.

With us: no enrolment fee, no contract and no prepaid blocks. You pay month by month and can stop at any month end.

Choosing

Which help, for which primary child?

A small group suits a child who

  • is broadly on track and enjoys company
  • needs regular practice more than rescue
  • is preparing for SATs rather than a selective test

Groups hold 15 to 20 children at a similar level.

One-to-one suits a child who

  • is preparing for an 11 plus test with a set date
  • has fallen behind and goes quiet in a class
  • needs lessons fitted around a busy week

One child, one tutor, the same face every week.

Common questions

Primary maths tuition costs: questions parents ask

How much does a KS2 maths tutor cost per hour?

It depends on the tutor's experience, whether lessons are online and where you live. The rates table lists the published figures we found, each with its source and the exchange rate used.

Why do 11 plus tutors charge more than other primary tutors?

11 plus preparation is specialist work for a selective test with a fixed date, and tutors who know an area's test format are in demand through Year 5. Everyday primary maths support is priced lower.

When should 11 plus maths tuition start?

Most families start in Year 5, because the test in many grammar school areas is sat early in Year 6. Our 11 plus pages cover each area's format.

Does my child need a tutor for the KS2 SATs?

Often not. Many children do well with school teaching and free past papers. A tutor helps when a child has a specific gap, such as fractions or times tables, or is anxious about tests.

What is the multiplication tables check?

A short on-screen check taken in June of Year 4 in England, covering the times tables up to 12 times 12. Regular short practice prepares children for it more than long lessons do.

Is a tuition centre or a private tutor better value?

Compare the same unit. Centres sell monthly memberships with set sessions; tutors sell hours. Our tutor vs tuition centre guide compares them.

Are there extra fees with you?

No. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end.

Can my child try a lesson first?

Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. For a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo: a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes with a written skill report afterwards. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.

Why are prices shown in US dollars?

We teach families in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so the page shows one currency. UK market figures were converted at one stated exchange rate.

See how your child learns before you pay for a month.

In the free first lesson the tutor works through a few problems with your child, then tells you plainly what would help and whether a tutor is needed at all. No card needed.
