Behind the number

Six things that move the price of a GCSE maths tutor

Who the tutor is

A university student who did well at A level, a qualified maths teacher and an examiner sit at very different points on the scale. Ask what the tutor has taught, not just what they studied.

Online or in your living room

A tutor who travels charges for the journey. The national guide we read puts the saving from switching to online at $13 to $46 an hour.

Where you live

Face-to-face rates follow local demand. The same guide's town averages are more than twice as high at the top of its list as at the bottom, while online rates barely move with your postcode.

One-to-one or a group

A matched group splits the tutor's hour between several students, which is why a month of group lessons costs less than a month of private ones. The trade is less time on your child's own mistakes.

How often, and for how long

Hourly tutors are cheap per lesson and expensive per year. Monthly plans price the whole run, so the honest comparison is cost per month of steady teaching, not cost per hour.

When in the school year you start

Starting in the autumn of Year 11 leaves time to fix gaps before mocks. Starting in the spring leaves time mainly for past papers, which suits a student who already understands the content.

The costs families tend to miss

Joining fees. Some centres charge a one-off registration fee before the first lesson. The three Kumon centres we read charge between $53 and $65 to register.

Prepaid blocks. Some agencies sell lessons in blocks paid upfront. Ask what happens to unused lessons if the tutor or the timetable stops working.

Cancellation rules. Many private tutors charge for a lesson cancelled at short notice. Read the rule before the first booking, not after a sick day.

Travel and time. A home visit costs the tutor's travel; a centre costs your own. Two lifts a week through a school year add up to a lot of evenings.

Materials. Older past papers and mark schemes for AQA, Edexcel and OCR are published free on the boards' own websites, so they should never be a paid extra.

With us: no enrolment fee, no contract, no prepaid blocks. You pay month by month and can stop at any month end.

Our planning guide

How many hours of tuition does a GCSE maths year need?

These are the plans our tutors suggest after a first lesson. They are planning numbers, not a promise: the starting point and the practice done between lessons decide the result.

SituationTypical planHours
One or two weak topics before mocksone lesson a week for six to eight weeks6 to 8
Steady support through Year 11one lesson a week from September to Mayabout 35
A full rebuild, a move from foundation to higher, or a resittwo lessons a week from September to Mayabout 70

We count roughly 35 teaching weeks between September and May. This is our own arithmetic, not an exam board figure.

What that means in money (our arithmetic): at the national online average of about $45 an hour, 35 hours costs about $1,575 and 70 hours about $3,150. Our one-to-one plan runs at $18.75 a lesson and a group place at $12.50, with the same tutor all year.

Price the teaching

How to judge whether a tutor is worth the money

  • Does the tutor work from your child's board and tier, with that board's papers and mark schemes?
  • Will they find where marks are lost before teaching, sorting each lost mark into a gap, a method slip or timing?
  • Is it the same tutor every week, tracking the same mistakes through to the exam?
  • Do you get a written note of progress, or only a lesson each week?
  • Is there a first lesson you can watch before paying for a month?
  • Does the price include everything, or are there joining fees, blocks and cancellation charges?
  • Will they tell you honestly whether foundation or higher is the right tier?
  • Do they refuse to promise a grade? Nobody honest can.
Choosing

Group or one-to-one, and which course?

Choose a group if

  • your child already has a working base and wants structure and regular practice
  • they learn well hearing other students' questions
  • you want the lowest monthly cost for the whole year

Groups hold 15 to 20 learners at a similar level and board.

Choose one-to-one if

  • there are specific gaps that keep costing marks
  • the aim is grade 7 to 9 and time is short
  • your child is anxious about maths or goes quiet in a class

One student, one tutor, a shared whiteboard and their own papers.

Common questions

GCSE maths tutor costs: questions parents ask

How much does a GCSE maths tutor cost per hour in the UK?

It depends mostly on who the tutor is, whether lessons are online or in person, and where you live. The cost table on this page sets out the published rates we found for each format, with the source for every figure and the exchange rate we used.

Is online GCSE maths tuition cheaper than face to face?

Usually. The national guide we read found online lessons cost less than face-to-face lessons, mainly because nobody travels and no venue is hired. Online also widens the choice of tutor beyond your own town.

How many hours of tuition does a GCSE maths student need?

Our planning guide: six to eight hours to fix one or two weak topics before mocks, about 35 hours for steady weekly support through Year 11, and about 70 hours for a full rebuild or a resit at two lessons a week. These are planning numbers, not a promise; the result depends on the starting point and practice between lessons.

Is a group class worth it for GCSE maths?

Yes, when the student already has a working base and the group is matched by level. Our groups hold 15 to 20 learners at a similar level and board. A student with specific gaps, or one aiming at grades 7 to 9 with little time left, usually gets more from one-to-one.

Are there extra fees on top of the monthly price?

Not with us: there is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end. Elsewhere, check for one-off registration fees, lessons sold in prepaid blocks, cancellation charges and travel time for home visits.

Which exam boards do you teach?

AQA, Edexcel and OCR, foundation and higher tier, working from the specification and past papers of the board your child sits. See GCSE maths tuition online for how lessons run.

Can adults resitting GCSE maths join?

Yes. Adults resitting GCSE maths are taught on the same live format, at a time that fits work. Our adult maths page explains the route for returning learners.

Can we try a lesson before paying for a month?

Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. If you would rather have a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo: a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes, followed by a written skill report and a learning roadmap on WhatsApp. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.

Why do you show prices in US dollars?

We are an online school teaching families in more than 25 countries and we bill outside India in US dollars, so this page shows one currency throughout. Market rates quoted here were converted from the UK figures at a single stated exchange rate.

See what a lesson is worth before you pay for one.

Bring a recent paper or mock. In the free first lesson the tutor shows where the marks are leaking and what a term of work would fix. No card needed.
