In 2016 a developer removed a small package called left-pad from the npm registry. An AI assistant will happily write a feature that calls one model provider, stores its results in one database and assumes both will always answer. The code works in the demo, and nothing in it is wrong. What it lacks is any plan for the day the provider is down, the price changes or the database disk fills, because the assistant was asked for a feature, not for a system that survives losing a part. As more products are built on a small number of AI services, those services become shared single points of failure for thousands of applications at once.
