ICSE Class 10 · Computer Applications (Java) · Exam date 2027 and paper pattern
The ICSE timetable usually appears in November, three months before the papers begin. By then a Class 10 student needs every unit taught, the lab file nearly closed and timed papers under way. Our live ICSE Java mini batch works to that calendar: Section A theory on Tuesdays, Section B programs and the lab file on Wednesdays, the specimen paper and full two-hour papers from December, and doubts answered live in every class.

As of 13 October 2026, CISCE has not released the ICSE 2027 timetable, so there is no official date yet for the Computer Applications paper. Last year's timetable was published on 13 November 2025, and the ICSE 2026 examinations ran from 17 February to 30 March 2026. The subject has a written paper of 100 marks in two hours, with 15 minutes of reading time beforehand: Section A carries 40 compulsory marks, and in Section B students answer four of six Java programs at 15 marks each. A separate internal assessment of 100 marks is awarded on at least twenty lab assignments. Modern Age Coders prepares students live, with a Tuesday 5:30 PM and Wednesday 8 PM IST mini batch in India and personalised one to one everywhere, built around that calendar.
Q1. When is the ICSE Computer Applications exam in 2027?
CISCE publishes the ICSE timetable on cisce.org and sends it to schools. Until it does, any page quoting a 2027 date for Computer Applications is guessing. We will add the date here as soon as the timetable is published.
Checked 13 October 2026: no ICSE 2027 timetable on cisce.org. The 2026 timetable was released on 13 November 2025.
| Reference point | Last cycle | What to expect for 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Timetable published | 13 November 2025 | Watch for the 2027 timetable from about November 2026 |
| ICSE examinations | 17 February to 30 March 2026 | A February to March 2027 window, with Computer Applications inside it |
| Computer Applications paper | Paper code 861, two hours plus 15 minutes reading time | The same design, since the 2027 syllabus is unchanged |
| Internal assessment | Conducted by the school on its own dates | Dates set by your school; marks sent to CISCE by the head of school |
A November timetable leaves roughly three months before the first paper. In that time a student cannot also learn arrays and strings for the first time and write twenty lab assignments. That is why our mini batch plans by the shape of the year: the Class 10 units in order from the start of the session, the lab file growing one program a week, and the winter kept for full papers.
The cover of the paper says that candidates may not write during the first 15 minutes, which are for reading. Computer Applications students should use that time to choose their four Section B programs out of six. In every full mock we rehearse this: read all six, choose four in under five minutes, then plan the order. A student who changes their mind halfway through a program loses time the paper does not give back.
Q2. What is the ICSE Computer Applications paper pattern?
Computer Applications is a Group III subject, which CISCE assesses half by its own external paper and half by internal assessment carried out in school. Both halves are worth 100 marks.
| Part | What is asked | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Section A, Question 1 | Twenty multiple-choice questions, one mark each, all compulsory | 20 |
| Section A, Question 2 | Ten short questions of two marks: outputs, errors, Java expressions, rewriting code | 20 |
| Section B, Questions 3 to 8 | Six programs offered, any four answered, 15 marks each | 60 |
| Written paper total | Two hours of writing after 15 minutes of reading | 100 |
| Internal assessment, subject teacher | Class design 10, variable description 10, coding and documentation 10, execution or output 20 | 50 |
| Internal assessment, external examiner | The same four criteria, marked separately | 50 |
The 2025 specimen tags every question with the thinking skill it tests: Recall, Understanding, Application or Analysis. Most of Section A is Understanding and Analysis, such as predicting an output or spotting why code fails, rather than recalling a definition. Every Section B program is tagged Understanding and Application.
This is why a student who learns definitions by heart can still score poorly. Tuesday classes spend most of their time on tracing and analysis rather than on definitions. The paper's full design, solved question by question, is on the specimen paper and mock tests page.
Q3. What kinds of programs does Section B ask for?
The latest official specimen, for 2025, gives one program from each of six families. The 2027 syllabus is the same as 2026, so preparing every family keeps all six choices open on the day.
| Specimen question | Family | What it tests | Syllabus unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question 3 | A class written to a specification | Member variables, an accept method with Scanner, a calculation from a rate table, display in a set format, and main | Class as the basis of all computation; user-defined methods |
| Question 4 | Searching | Binary search on a given sorted list of values | Arrays (search on single dimensional arrays) |
| Question 5 | String transformation | Converting case and replacing characters by a rule, keeping the others | String handling; Character methods |
| Question 6 | Double dimensional array | Accepting a 4 x 4 array and printing the sum of each row | Arrays (row, column and diagonal sums) |
| Question 7 | Number property | Checking a defined special number from its digits | Class IX revision: loops and digit extraction |
| Question 8 | Method overloading | Three versions of one method: a nested-loop pattern, a condition, and a formula | User-defined methods; polymorphism |
Students can leave out any two programs, but only if they are strong in at least four families. A student who avoids strings and double dimensional arrays has no choice left on the day. On Wednesdays the mini batch rotates through all six families so none goes cold. Practice sets for each family are on ICSE Java programs practice, and the questions most worth drilling are listed on ICSE Computer Applications important questions.
Q4. Which dates matter between now and the paper?
Some of these dates are fixed, some come from your school, and some have not been announced yet. Each row is labelled, and shows what the live classes are working on then.
| Milestone | When | Status | In the live classes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab file passes fifteen programs | October 2026 | Our target | Arrays on Tuesdays; search and sort programs in the Wednesday lab |
| ICSE 2027 timetable | Around November 2026, going by last year | Awaited | String handling; the lab file reaches twenty programs |
| Specimen paper for 2027 | Not yet posted | Awaited | Solved live once released; the 2025 specimen is used until then |
| School internal assessment | Set by your school | Varies by school | Lab file review against the four criteria; an unseen BlueJ program |
| Full two-hour papers | January to February 2027 | Our plan | Three full papers, reviewed in two halves across Tuesday and Wednesday |
| ICSE examinations | February to March 2027 | Expected, as in 2026 | Final Section A shape drills and program family refreshers |
| Improvement examination registration | June or July of the exam year | CISCE regulation | Not needed by students who follow the plan |
The order matters. The internal assessment is held by your school on its own dates and is worth the same 100 marks as the written paper, so the lab file cannot wait for the winter. A student who finishes twenty documented programs by November gets December and January for the written paper alone. One who is still writing lab programs in January is preparing for two exams at once.
Q5. Which CISCE rules should families know?
A student may take the Improvement Examination in up to two subjects in the same year, but only the theory paper is retaken; internal assessment marks already awarded are carried forward. The 100 lab marks are decided once, in school, which is the strongest reason to build the lab file properly from the start.
CISCE's pass mark for each subject is 33%. In Computer Applications the written paper and the internal assessment both add to the subject result, so families aiming for a high percentage should treat the lab file as seriously as the paper.
The external examiner is chosen by the head of school and can come from the school's own staff, provided they are not the one teaching Computer Applications to your child's section. The syllabus gives the example of a computer teacher of Class VIII examining Class X. The examiner marks on the same four criteria as the subject teacher.
What CISCE requires for 2027 is a record of at least twenty programming assignments written across the year. A separate project is not part of its scheme. When a school speaks of the computer project it usually means that finished record, though a few schools add a bigger program of their own, and their instructions decide that. The full plan is on the project and internal assessment page.
A fifth rule decides how answers are written: Section B programs are expected with variable descriptions, and the internal assessment marks variable description as its own ten-mark criterion. A program without a variable description loses marks in both halves of the subject. Our students write the description table for every program from the first week, so by February it is a habit.
Q6. How do the live classes prepare for that date?
The mini batch has up to six ICSE Class 10 students and one teacher from the start of the session to the paper. In a group that small, every student's program can be read, run and marked in class.
A Class 10 unit is taught, then practised in Section A's shapes: an output traced line by line, a loop count, an error found and corrected, a Java expression written exactly. The last few minutes revisit a Class 9 topic, because Section A draws on both years.
One program family is written in BlueJ, run, marked against the four internal criteria and added to the lab file with its variable description and output. In the board season, Wednesday becomes the review class for the Section B half of each full paper.
A student who is stuck shares their BlueJ window and the teacher reads the code with them line by line. Doubts from home practice are taken first in the next class, before anything new is taught.
Once CISCE posts the specimen for the year it is solved live, and three full two-hour papers follow, each with 15 minutes of reading first, as in the hall. How the series runs is on the specimen paper and mock tests page.
For a student at an ICSE school in Dubai, Sharjah, Singapore, West Java or near Bangkok, every step above happens in private classes at a local evening hour, on the same calendar. See ICSE Computer Applications classes in the Gulf and abroad.
Batch or personalised: you choose
The calendar, the lab file plan, the full papers and the teachers do not change between formats. In India the decision is about the timetable and the size of the class. For ICSE students living abroad there is one format, one to one. Fees are monthly, with no admission charge, and you can stop at any month end.
Option 1 · Fixed batch timings
₹2,999
per month, two live classes a week
Option 2 · Choose your own timing
₹4,999
per month, one private class a weektwo private classes a week, at a time set with you
Outside India: the ICSE Computer Applications course runs as personalised one to one, two private classes a week at a time set in your own time zone. The mini batch is taught for families in India.
Joining in October or November? The mini batch can still bring a new student up to date with catch-up help. From December, personalised one to one is usually the honest advice, because a private schedule can fit the remaining units, the lab file and the full papers into the weeks before the exam. Fees appear in your own currency.
Studying outside India?
CISCE lists ICSE schools outside India in the UAE, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, all following the same Computer Applications syllabus and examination calendar. For those students we run the whole plan as private classes, timed for the evening after school in your city.

Questions about the exam date and pattern
CISCE had not released the ICSE 2027 timetable when we checked on 13 October 2026, so there is no official date yet. Last year's timetable came out on 13 November 2025, and the 2026 examinations ran from 17 February to 30 March 2026. Expect the Computer Applications paper in the February to March 2027 window, and check cisce.org for the timetable.
Two hours of writing, after 15 minutes in which candidates may read but not write. The paper is 100 marks. Students should use the reading time to choose their four Section B programs out of six, which our full mocks rehearse.
Section A is compulsory and carries 40 marks: Question 1 has twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions and Question 2 has ten two-mark questions. In Section B students answer any four of six programs, Questions 3 to 8, worth 15 marks each, for 60 marks. A separate internal assessment carries another 100 marks.
On at least twenty lab assignments done during the year. Two people mark the record, the subject teacher and an external examiner, and each gives up to 50. Each 50 is made up of ten marks apiece for class design, the variable description and coding with documentation, plus twenty for whether the program runs and gives correct output. The head of school submits the combined mark out of 100 to CISCE.
No. The specimen paper states that BufferedReader and DataInputStream should not be used in Section B programs. Input is taken with the Scanner class, which is how our students write every program from the first class.
No. The 2027 syllabus is the same as 2026: a revision of Class 9, then classes and objects, user-defined methods, constructors, library classes including wrapper classes, encapsulation, single and double dimensional arrays, and string handling. Recursion is not in the syllabus.
CISCE allows an Improvement Examination in up to two subjects in the same year. For a subject with internal assessment, only the theory paper is retaken and the internal marks already awarded are carried forward. So the 100 internal marks are decided once, in school.
CISCE's pass mark is 33% for each subject. Computer Applications is a Group III subject, assessed half by the written paper and half by internal assessment, so a strong lab file supports the overall subject result.
In India, the mini batch meets on Tuesday at 5:30 PM for Section A and theory and on Wednesday at 8 PM for Section B programs and the lab file. The target is twenty documented lab programs by November and every unit taught before the winter, then the specimen and three full two-hour papers. Doubts are answered live in every class. Outside India the same plan runs one to one.
Usually not, if your child joins soon. In October and November the mini batch can take a new student with catch-up help on the lab file. From December, personalised one to one is usually the better choice, because a private timetable can fit the remaining units, the lab programs and the full papers into the weeks left. The first class is a free demo.
