Ask a Class 10 student how they are preparing for Computer Applications and they will talk about programs. Programs are sixty marks and they deserve the attention, but the other forty are a compulsory section of short answers across the entire syllabus that punishes vague vocabulary and careless tracing, and it is where good programmers quietly lose their grade. To prepare for the ICSE Class 10 Computer Applications written paper, give Section A the attention its forty compulsory marks deserve: short answers across all eight units that test exact vocabulary and careful tracing, drilled separately from program writing. Divide the two hours as roughly forty minutes for Section A, seventy for the four Section B programs chosen by family in the first two minutes, and ten for checking outputs and variable descriptions. Finish the lab file and project before the school's internal assessment, then run three full papers under time with every lost mark re-attempted. Q1. What does Section A actually ask?
Section A cannot be dodged by choosing questions, and it cannot be answered by writing programs. It has its own shapes, and each has its own technique.

Every technique in the right-hand column is a piece of paper: a trace, a table, a list. That is the whole secret of Section A. Students lose it by answering from the shape of the code instead of from its behaviour, and the shape is designed to mislead. Tuesdays in our batch end with a Section A drill on the week's unit, on paper, before anything is run, so that tracing becomes the default rather than the emergency measure. Q2. What does a full-marks short answer look like?
Differentiate between a constructor and a method. Two marks, two students.
A constructor is used to create objects and a method is used to perform actions. // One point, loosely worded. // No example. No second point. // Half the marks, at best.
Nothing is wrong. It is simply one idea where the question asked for a difference, and a difference needs two parallel points the examiner can tick.
Constructor - has the same name as the class - has no return type, not even void - called automatically when an object is created with new Method - has any valid name - must declare a return type or void - called explicitly using the object Example: Student(String n) is a constructor; void display() is a method.
Three parallel points, one example, the paper's own vocabulary. Written in under a minute by a student who practised the format, and it transfers to every difference question on the syllabus.
The format is the lesson: parallel points, the syllabus's own words, one concrete example. It answers constructor and method, pure and impure, linear and binary search, private and public, autoboxing and unboxing, and every other difference the paper likes to ask. We keep a bank of them, and the Tuesday drill draws two at random each week until the format is automatic.

The plan gives Section A a mark a minute and Section B slightly less, which reflects how the marks are actually earned: a rushed Section A loses easy marks to careless traces, while a Section B program written in sixteen minutes instead of fifteen loses nothing. Choosing the four programs in the first five minutes, and never revisiting the choice, is the biggest single time saver; a fifth half-attempted program earns nothing and steals the checking phase from the four that count. Three timed papers turn this table from advice into habit.

Q4. How are the mocks run?
Three full papers under two-hour conditions in the final two months, on the board's pattern: compulsory Section A, five Section B programs with four to attempt, variable descriptions required. Each is reviewed the following Tuesday in two halves, Section A answer by answer and Section B program by program, and every lost mark is re-attempted on the spot rather than read about. Students see their score move across the three papers, which is the best cure for exam nerves we know.
Before the school's internal assessment window, a full dress rehearsal: the lab file reviewed assignment by assignment, the project questioned by a teacher the student has not met, and one unseen program written, compiled and tested in BlueJ under time. The habits that hold up on the day, reading the whole question, the class shell first, compiling early, testing with an awkward input, are rehearsed until they are boring, which is the state a student wants to be in when an examiner is watching.
Which review matters more depends on the student. A strong programmer whose losses are in Section A gets the Tuesday drill expanded and the Wednesday lab reduced to maintenance; the reverse profile gets the opposite tilt. A batch of four or five is what makes that per-student adjustment possible, and it is the main reason the mini batch exists.
Q5. What do the last eight weeks look like?
The internal assessment comes first, so the countdown starts by closing it. Everything after that belongs to the paper.
The file past twenty assignments with every output captured, the project drafted and defended once, the dress rehearsal done. The school's practical window can now arrive whenever the school sets it, and the student's attention is free for the paper.
A full paper under time before any revision, so the losses show where to spend the weeks. Almost always the audit finds Section A leaking more than Section B, and the next fortnight is weighted accordingly.
Tuesdays run the seven Section A shapes across the eight units, on paper. Wednesdays keep the six program families warm, one from a blank page each day at home, in under fifteen minutes with its variable description.
Full paper, timed, then Section A answer by answer and Section B program by program the following Tuesday, every lost mark re-attempted on the spot. The gap between paper one and paper two is the number that changes how the last fortnight feels.
The final paper, reviewed, then the rule is no new material: a difference question and an output trace a day, one program from a different family a day, the time plan run once more in the head, sleep. New topics in the last week cost more marks than they earn.
One board-specific note for families with children on both boards: CBSE introduced a two-phase Class 10 examination in 2026, with an optional second attempt in May. That is a CBSE arrangement. For ICSE, plan on the single written paper in the February to March window CISCE schedules, and confirm any improvement or compartment provision with the school for the current session rather than assuming a second attempt.
Q6. Where are marks actually lost?
A fragment looks like it prints one thing and prints another, because of precedence, integer division, or an off-by-one loop. Every output question is a trace, and students who skip the trace donate the mark.
The question says differentiate; the answer gives one property of one thing. Two parallel points and an example is the format, and it earns full marks on every difference question in the syllabus once it is a habit.
Mixed operators, increments in expressions, integer division and the cast that should have been there: the Class 9 revision unit's traps, still the most reliable source of lost Section A marks in Class 10.
Section B rewards any four. Attempting five means none was checked, and the fifth earns nothing. Choose by family in the first five minutes and commit.
The board asks for it; students drop it when the clock is loud. It is the cheapest part of fifteen marks and it also catches the student's own mistakes, so skipping it costs twice.
The internal assessment comes first. A lab file finished in the paper's revision window steals the weeks Section A needed, and the two halves of the subject end up competing when they should have been sequenced.

Questions about the board exam
Our recommended split, practised in every mock: about forty minutes for Section A's forty compulsory marks, about seventy minutes for the four Section B programs, and the last ten minutes for checking outputs and variable descriptions. Section A is worth a mark a minute and Section B slightly less, so the temptation to rush Section A to reach the programs costs more than it saves. The split is a habit, not a rule, and a student who has run it five times under time no longer needs to think about it.
Short answers across the whole syllabus: predict the output of a fragment, state the value of an expression, name the data type or the error, give the difference between two things such as a constructor and a method, write a single statement that does something, correct a wrong line, and say how many times a loop runs. Forty compulsory marks in this style, which rewards exact vocabulary and careful tracing far more than memory.
Section A first, because it is compulsory and warms up the exact skills the programs need, then the four Section B programs starting with the family the student is strongest in. Choosing the four programs in the first two minutes of Section B, by family, and not revisiting that choice is the single biggest time saver in the paper. A fifth half-attempted program earns nothing; a checked fourth one earns its full fifteen.
Three full papers under time in the final two months, each reviewed the following Tuesday in two halves: Section A answer by answer, then Section B program by program, with every lost mark re-attempted on the spot. The internal assessment, lab work and project, is completed at school in the weeks before the written examination, on a schedule the school sets within CISCE's framework, with the external examiner's visit falling in that window. That is why the lab file and project must be finished before the final theory revision begins, and why our countdown starts from the practical rather than from the paper.
Because Section A tests reading, and programming practice trains writing. A student can write a bubble sort and still misjudge what x++ + ++x evaluates to, or how many times a loop with a tricky condition runs, because those are traps in reading code rather than producing it. The cure is a Section A drill separate from the programs: fragments traced on paper, outputs predicted before running, differences written in the paper's own vocabulary. Plan on one written examination in the February to March window, as CISCE schedules it, and treat any improvement or compartment provision as something to confirm with the school for the current session rather than a second attempt to rely on.
