When Functional Skills maths is free
The government's funding approval rules for England list a statutory entitlement to English and maths. Under it, the adult skills fund "supports students with full funding if they are: undertaking English or maths qualifications and have not previously attained a GCSE grade C or grade 4 or higher in either of these subjects".
The same page lists "reformed Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths at entry level to level 2" among the qualifications in that entitlement.
In practice, colleges and adult learning providers in England offer funded places to adults who meet the rules. Places, timetables and waiting lists vary by area, so ask your local college or council adult learning service.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own systems, so the rules above are for England. Source: gov.uk, "Statutory entitlements: other approval criteria", updated 12 December 2025.

What you are paying for on each route
A funded college place
Free if you qualify. Classes run at the college's times, which suits some people and rules out others with shifts or childcare.
A self-study online course
Materials, practice and messaging with a tutor, at your own pace. It suits disciplined learners; the course price is the same whether you finish or not.
A live taught course
A tutor teaching you in real time, checking your working and adjusting the pace. It costs more per month and is built for people who learn better with a person.
The exam
Functional Skills exams are taken through an approved centre. Some courses include them; others, ours included, leave you to book separately.
Level 1 or Level 2
Many employers and apprenticeships ask for Level 2. Starting at the right level saves paying for a course you do not need.
Time to finish
A course priced in one payment costs the same however long you take. A monthly course costs less if you finish sooner, more if you need longer.

Functional Skills maths costs: questions adults ask
Is Functional Skills maths free for adults?
In England it can be. Government funding rules give full funding to adults taking maths qualifications, including Functional Skills, who have not already got a GCSE maths at grade 4 or C. Ask a local college or adult learning service whether you qualify.
How much does a paid Functional Skills maths course cost?
It varies with the provider and with sales. The price table lists published prices we found, each with its source and the exchange rate used.
Is the exam included in the course price?
Sometimes. Some providers sell courses with or without exams. With us the course is the teaching, and you book the exam with an approved centre.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 2 is the higher level and the one many employers and apprenticeships ask for. Level 1 is a step towards it. A short check in the first lesson shows where to start.
Is Functional Skills maths the same as a GCSE?
No. It is a separate qualification focused on using maths in real situations. Some employers and courses accept Level 2 in place of a GCSE; check what yours needs.
How long does a Functional Skills maths course take?
It depends on your starting point and how often you study. Our course plans about six months for a full level, less for learners who start part-way.
Do you offer the exam?
No. We teach the maths and prepare you for the paper; the exam is booked through an approved centre. See the tuition page for how booking works.
Can I try a lesson first?
Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. For a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo; if you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.
Why are prices in US dollars?
We teach learners in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so the page uses one currency. UK prices were converted at one stated exchange rate.
Find your level before you pay for a course.
In the free first lesson a tutor checks where you are against Level 1 and Level 2 and tells you honestly whether a funded place, self-study or live lessons suits you. No card needed.
