You need the qualification for a real goal — and the maths got in the way years ago.
Most people come to Functional Skills maths because something they want — an apprenticeship, a college place, a job, a career step — requires it, usually at Level 2. And for many, maths is the one thing standing between them and that goal, because it went wrong at school and was never fixed.
That makes it feel high-stakes and stressful, which is exactly the wrong frame of mind for learning maths.
The good news is that Functional Skills maths is practical — it's about using numbers in real situations like budgets, measurements and timetables, not abstract algebra. That's far more learnable for an adult than school maths ever felt, when it's taught well and patiently.
We teach it one to one, from wherever you are, in plain terms, on the everyday situations the exam actually uses. The qualification becomes reachable, and the dread fades fast.
Real situations, plain explanations, the right level.
Built around your goal and your deadline.
Check your level and goal
We confirm the level you need (often Level 2) and assess where you are, then build up through Entry 3 and Level 1 if required.
Teach maths through real life
Money, measures, time and data taught on the everyday situations the exam uses, so it makes immediate sense.
Fill the gaps patiently
We rebuild whatever's shaky from school — fractions, percentages, division — without judgment and at your pace.
Practise real exam papers
We work through Functional Skills sample assessments so the format and question style feel familiar on the day.
A real Level 2 task — a budget worked out calmly.
The question: "You earn £1,800 a month. Rent is 35% of it, bills are £240, and you want to save £150. How much is left for everything else?" It looks like a lot at once — which is where people panic.
How we teach it. Functional Skills is about handling a real situation one clear step at a time. We list what comes out, work each bit, then subtract from the total:
bills = £240
savings = £150
total out = 630 + 240 + 150 = £1,020
left over = 1800 − 1020 = £780
There's no abstract algebra — just "work out each amount, add them up, take them away from what you started with." The only real skill is the percentage (35% = 0.35), and once that clicks, every money question on the exam works the same way. We teach you to break a busy question into calm steps like this, which is exactly what Functional Skills rewards — and a skill you'll use for the rest of your life, long after you've passed.
The same clear thinking runs through everyday maths and modern work.
One step at a time
Breaking a busy problem into calm steps is the heart of both Functional Skills and programming. We make it a habit.
Reason from the rule
Knowing why 35% means × 0.35 — not just memorising it — is the same logic that lets a coder trust their work.
Check it makes sense
"Could £780 be left from £1,800 after those costs?" A quick sanity check catches mistakes at work and in the exam.
We're Modern Age Coders, and we teach adults to code as well as to compute. The plain, step-by-step reasoning behind Functional Skills is the same reasoning behind data, spreadsheets and basic programming — which is why many of our Functional Skills learners discover they're more capable with numbers and technology than they ever believed.
Everything the Functional Skills maths exam tests.
Across Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 — pitched to the level you need.
Number & calculation
The four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio — the everyday number skills the exam is built on.
Money & financial maths
Budgets, wages, bills, discounts and best-value comparisons — the questions that appear again and again.
Measures, shape & space
Length, weight, capacity, time, area and perimeter, and reading scales and plans.
Data handling
Reading and drawing tables, charts and graphs, and working with averages and simple statistics.
Using a calculator
Confident, accurate calculator use for the calculator section, plus mental and written methods for the rest.
Exam format & technique
The structure of your awarding body's papers, the question style, and how to show working and check answers.
The right fit — and an honest word on what to expect.
This fits the apprentice who needs Level 2 to complete their qualification, the adult returning to college, the career-changer who needs a maths certificate, and anyone for whom maths has been a barrier to a real opportunity. Entry 3 and Level 1 learners are just as welcome as Level 2.
What's realistic. Confidence usually returns within a few lessons as the practical approach clicks. Being ready to pass tracks your starting level and the level you need — often a few months of steady work for Level 2. We'll give you an honest timeline, not a sales pitch.

Tutors chosen for patience first.
Teaching an adult who needs Functional Skills for a real goal — and who may carry years of maths anxiety — takes a particular kind of teacher: one who never rushes, never judges, and genuinely believes you can do this. We hire for exactly that and check it. A tutor who makes a learner feel small doesn't last here.
You keep the same tutor, who learns your goal, your level and your deadline, and keeps the whole thing calm and on track.
"I needed Level 2 to finish my apprenticeship and had failed it twice. My tutor taught it through real work situations — it finally made sense, and I passed."

Everything you might be wondering.
What is Functional Skills maths?
A practical maths qualification at Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 is broadly equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 'pass' for many purposes, and is often required for apprenticeships, college and jobs.
Which level do I need?
Often Level 2. We check your requirement, assess where you are, and build up through Entry 3 and Level 1 if needed.
Functional Skills or GCSE resit — which is better for me?
Depends on what your employer or college accepts. Functional Skills is more practical and often quicker; GCSE is broader. We'll talk it through honestly. See our adult maths classes.
I've been out of education a long time. Is that a problem?
Not at all — most of our Functional Skills learners are returning adults. We start wherever you are and never make you feel behind.
How much does it cost?
USD 100 per month for private 1:1 — eight live lessons, two each week. Small-group option USD 40 per month. No contract; cancel any time.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — the first lesson is free, no card needed.
Do you provide the exam, or just the teaching?
We provide the teaching and preparation; the exam is booked through an approved awarding centre. We'll make sure you're genuinely ready and can point you to how booking works.
Will I have the same tutor?
Yes — one tutor who learns your goal, level and deadline.
I have maths anxiety. Will this be hard?
The one-to-one setting helps — no class, no being put on the spot. Most people relax within a couple of lessons.
Are lessons live?
Yes — live, one-to-one, with a shared whiteboard.
When can I have lessons? I work full time.
Early-morning, evening and weekend slots in UK time (GMT/BST).
How quickly can I be ready for the exam?
Often a few months of steady work for Level 2, depending on your starting level. We'll give you an honest timeline.
