Where are the best AI and programming classes for Blackburn?
Blackburn with Darwen had 154,738 residents at the 2021 census. The ONS puts the Blackburn built-up area at 124,955 and Darwen at 27,900. The borough is young: 10 to 14 year olds alone make up 7.6 per cent of residents, against 6.0 per cent nationally. From India, our teachers run live video lessons in AI, programming, Python and maths for anyone aged 6 to 67, privately or in groups of five to ten who are at the same stage. A free first lesson shows which course fits. The Blackburn project asks how precise an 18th-century count of spinning machines can be. Staying on is USD 100 per month in a class or USD 150 per month one-to-one.
George W. Daniels records that the founder of the Peel family at Blackburn, experimenting with carding machines, employed James Hargreaves, the name forever tied to the spinning-jenny. The jenny grew fast: eight spindles in 1767, "sixteen or more" in the 1770 patent, eighty by 1784, and perhaps 120 in the end. In 1788 a pamphlet estimated 20,070 hand-jennies of eighty spindles at work, alongside 550 of Crompton's mules with ninety each. Multiply and you get 1,605,600 jenny spindles, a number that looks exact to the last digit. It is nothing of the kind. A Blackburn learner can write Python that carries the uncertainty through the sum honestly, using a tool called interval arithmetic.

| Band | Borough residents | Borough % | England % |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 to 9 | 11,162 | 7.2% | 5.9% |
| 10 to 14 | 11,733 | 7.6% | 6.0% |
| 15 to 19 | 10,857 | 7.0% | 5.7% |
| 55 to 59 | 9,360 | 6.0% | 6.7% |
| 75 to 79 | 4,086 | 2.6% | 3.6% |
| 85 and over | 2,586 | 1.7% | 2.4% |
The school-age bands stand well above England, while every band from 55 upwards sits below. The Darwen built-up area of 27,900 lies wholly within the borough; a small part of the Blackburn built-up area spills over its edge. Learners follow the national curriculum for England, and we pause for whichever school holidays you tell us about.
The Lancashire page covers the county, and the North West page lists the region.
Every vague input becomes a range, and the ranges flow through the arithmetic.
The learner builds a small Interval class in Python holding a low and a high value. Adding two intervals adds the lows and the highs; multiplying positive intervals multiplies them. The pamphlet's 80 spindles per jenny is replaced by the range the book itself gives, from 16 to 120. Multiplied by the 20,070 hand-jennies, the total becomes anywhere from 321,120 to 2,408,400 spindles, a range more than seven times wide.
| Assumption | Jenny spindles | Mule share of all spindles | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 per jenny, as the pamphlet says | 1,605,600 | 3.0% | One number, no error bar |
| Anywhere from 16 to 120 per jenny | 321,120 to 2,408,400 | 2.0% to 13.4% | Honest range from the book |
| Midpoint of 68 per jenny | 1,364,760 | 3.5% | Looks precise, hides the range |
Mule spindles are 550 times 90, or 49,500. The mule's share of all spindles is 3.0 per cent at the pamphlet's figure, but anything from 2.0 to 13.4 per cent once the jenny size is left open. The tempting shortcut is to take the midpoint, 68 spindles, and report 3.5 per cent. That is a real number with no right to its decimal place, and the program refuses to print it without the range beside it.
Then comes the subtle part, the dependency problem. Suppose the 550 mules were only good to ten per cent. The mule count appears twice in the share, above and below the line. Treat the two appearances as independent and Python reports 2.68 to 3.30 per cent; rewrite the formula so the count appears once and the true range is 2.70 to 3.28. Here the gap is small, but in longer calculations it can swamp the answer. A test checks that x minus x returns exactly zero only when the code knows both are the same x.
Estimate jars of buttons as "between" two numbers, then add two jars and see how wide the range grows.
Write the Interval class with add and multiply, and redo the 1788 sum.
Handle division and the dependency problem, and test rewritten formulas.
The spindle counts, the 1788 pamphlet figures and the Peel family link come from George W. Daniels, The early English cotton industry, on Project Gutenberg. The intervals and every calculation are ours.
What Daniels says about the spinning-jenny.
| Year | What the book records |
|---|---|
| 1767 | Said to contain eight spindles; not prominent before this year |
| 1770 | Patent specification mentioned sixteen or more spindles |
| 1784 | The number had increased to eighty |
| Later | As many as one hundred and twenty are said to have been introduced |
| 1788 | A pamphlet estimated 20,070 hand-jennies of eighty spindles at work |

Honest uncertainty matters in modern computing too. Engineers building bridges, surveyors fixing boundaries and climate modellers all carry ranges rather than single numbers, and interval arithmetic is used in verified computing, where a program must prove its answer is correct even with rounding errors. A Blackburn learner who has put error bars on a 1788 estimate already thinks the way those programmers do.
Modern Age Coders is not linked to Project Gutenberg or the ONS. Their text and data are their own; the ranges, and any slip in them, are ours.

Ask a chatbot how many spindles were turning in 1788 and it may produce one tidy figure. It rarely adds that the inputs were guesses, or how wide the true range could be.
A Blackburn learner who has built an Interval class asks the missing question: plus or minus how much?
Asking how sure an answer is makes a strong case for Blackburn teenagers to keep learning to code in 2026. The longer argument is in why teenagers should still learn to code in 2026.
