Why A level maths tutors charge more than GCSE tutors
Three subjects in one course
A level maths is pure maths plus mechanics plus statistics. A tutor has to be comfortable with all three, and plenty of strong GCSE tutors are not.
The step up in Year 12
Calculus, proof and logarithms arrive within the first terms. Tutors who can teach that step from scratch are fewer, and they price accordingly.
Exam board detail
Edexcel, AQA and OCR each set their own papers and their own large data set for statistics. Knowing your board saves lesson time you would otherwise pay for.
Degree-level tutors
Many A level tutors hold or are studying for a maths or physics degree. The national guide we read puts university-level maths tutoring at about $70 an hour, which pulls the top of the A level range up.The national guide we read prices university-level maths tutoring above A level, which pulls the top of the range up.
Online or at home
A tutor who travels charges for the journey. The same guide puts the saving from switching to online lessons at $13 to $46 an hour. The same guide found online lessons consistently cheaper than home visits.
Spring demand
From February to May, sixth-formers and Year 11s compete for the same tutors. Families who book in the autumn usually get the time slot they want.
How many hours of A level maths tuition does a student need?
These are the plans our tutors suggest after a first lesson. They are planning numbers, not a promise: where the student starts and how much they practise between lessons decide the outcome.
| Situation | Typical plan | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Patching one weak area, say vectors or hypothesis testing | one lesson a week for six to eight weeks | 6 to 8 |
| Steady support through Year 12 | one lesson a week from September to June | about 38 |
| Year 13 run-in to the summer papers | two lessons a week from January to May | about 34 |
| Full two-year course alongside school | one lesson a week in each year | about 75 |
We count roughly 38 teaching weeks from September to June and about 17 from January to May. This is our own arithmetic, not an exam board figure.
What that means in money (our arithmetic): at the national A level average of about $55 an hour, a steady Year 12 of 38 hours costs about $2,090 and a full two years about $4,125. A one-to-one lesson with us costs $18.75 and a group place $12.50.
How to tell a good A level maths tutor from an expensive one
- Can they teach all three strands, pure, mechanics and statistics, or only pure?
- Do they work from your board's specification and its large data set?
- Will they read your child's last test and find where the marks went before teaching anything new?
- Is it the same tutor every week through to the summer papers?
- Do they set practice between lessons and check it?
- Is there a first lesson you can watch before paying?
- Are there joining fees, prepaid blocks or cancellation charges on top of the hourly rate?
- Will they decline to promise a grade? Nobody honest can promise one.
Group or one-to-one for A level maths?
A small group suits a student who
- keeps up in class but wants structure and more practice
- learns from hearing other students' questions
- wants the lowest monthly cost across two years
Groups hold 15 to 20 students working at a similar level.
One-to-one suits a student who
- has a specific gap, often calculus or mechanics
- is also taking Further Maths and needs both timetabled
- has little time before the summer papers
One student, one tutor and their own past papers.

A level maths tutor costs: questions families ask
How much does an A level maths tutor cost per hour in the UK?
It depends on the tutor's experience, whether lessons are online or face to face, and where you live. The rates table above lists the published figures we found for each format, with a source for each one and the exchange rate we used.
Why does A level maths tuition cost more than GCSE tuition?
The course is harder to teach. A tutor has to cover pure maths, mechanics and statistics, and handle the step up to calculus and proof in Year 12. Fewer tutors can do all of that well, so they charge more.
Is online A level maths tuition cheaper than face to face?
Usually. The national guide we read found online lessons cheaper because nobody travels, and online also lets you choose a tutor who knows your exam board rather than whoever lives nearby.
How many hours of A level maths tuition will my child need?
Our planning guide: six to eight hours to patch one weak area, about 38 hours for weekly support through Year 12, and about 75 hours for both years at one lesson a week. These are planning figures, not a promise.
Should the tutor know our exam board?
Yes. Edexcel, AQA and OCR set different papers and different large data sets for statistics. We teach from the board your child is sitting and use its past papers.
Can one tutor cover both Maths and Further Maths?
Yes, and it saves time because the two courses share foundations. Our Further Maths course is taught alongside A level Maths.
Is there a contract or a joining fee?
Not with us. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end.
Can we try a lesson before paying?
Yes. The first lesson is free and needs no card. If you want a class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Demo: a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes followed by a written skill report and a learning roadmap on WhatsApp. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.
Why are prices on this page in US dollars?
We are an online school teaching families in more than 25 countries and we bill outside India in US dollars, so the page uses one currency throughout. UK market rates were converted at a single stated exchange rate.
