Indian mathematical olympiad pathway · Classes 8 to 12 · RMO 15 November 2026, INMO 17 January 2027
The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics is the first stage of the programme that ends at the International Mathematical Olympiad, and it is not the SOF exam that shares the name. IOQM is an answer paper; RMO and INMO are six-question proof papers lasting three and four and a half hours. A student who can find answers quickly has done the easy half. Our batches of five to ten, grouped by class, teach the four areas the papers draw on and, from the second month, the writing of a proof a marker will credit, on HBCSE's own past papers, counting back from 15 November and 17 January.

The pathway tests number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics with proofs, so the base is our olympiad mathematics course, with the school-maths courses underneath it for students still building the foundation.

The core / IOQM to INMO
Built for exactly this pathway: the four areas, problem sets that need an idea rather than a formula, and a proof written and marked every week.

Classes 8 to 10 / the foundation
Proofs and problem solving on the school syllabus, for the student who is strong in class and not yet ready for olympiad problems. The natural on-ramp to IOQM.

Classes 9 to 12 / the base
Algebra, geometry and trigonometry taught for understanding, so the olympiad work sits on solid ground rather than on gaps.
Open the syllabus →Ans. The short version
India's mathematical olympiad programme runs IOQM, the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics, then the Regional Mathematical Olympiad, then the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad, then training camps that select the team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. IOQM is an offline paper answered on an OMR sheet with no negative marking, open to students in Classes 8 to 12 within a published birth-date window, and a family can register individually through the online portal or through a registered centre; exam centres are in India only. RMO is six proof questions in three hours on 15 November 2026 and INMO is six proof questions in four and a half hours on 17 January 2027, both reached by qualification. The syllabus is number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics, with calculus and statistics excluded. Modern Age Coders prepares students live online in batches of five to ten grouped by class: one class a week on the mathematics, one on problem solving and proof writing using HBCSE's own past papers. The first class is a free demo, and the group batch fee is shown on this page in your own currency.
Q1. What is the pathway, stage by stage?
Everything below is taken from the IOQM site run by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India) and the HBCSE olympiad site, read on 22 September 2026. We quote them because the SOF exam with the same three letters causes real confusion.
| Stage | Who and how | When | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| IOQM, Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics | Classes 8 to 12; for the 2026 cycle, students born between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2014. Register "either through a registered Centre or individually through the online registration portal." Home-schooled and open-schooling students are eligible. | IOQM 2026 sat on 6 September 2026; the next cycle's dates were not yet published | Offline, answered on an OMR sheet, no negative marking |
| RMO, Regional Mathematical Olympiad | IOQM qualifiers only, by HBCSE's published cutoff; no separate registration | Sunday 15 November 2026, 1:00 to 4:00 PM | Six questions, three hours, "each question requires writing detailed proof" |
| INMO, Indian National Mathematical Olympiad | RMO qualifiers only | Sunday 17 January 2027, 12:00 to 4:30 PM | Six questions, four and a half hours, detailed proofs |
| After INMO | Top INMO scorers | Camps later in 2027 | INMO Training Camp, IMO Training Camp, Pre-Departure Camp, then the International Mathematical Olympiad team |
| Syllabus | All stages | "Number Theory, Geometry, Algebra, and Combinatorics... Calculus and Statistics are excluded"; problems test "logical reasoning, creativity, and mathematical thinking rather than routine application of formulas" | |
| Where you can sit it | All stages | Exam centres in India only. Students living abroad "must travel to India and appear at an Examination Centre located in India" and are placed under the Delhi (NCR) region for RMO selection | |
| Fee paid to MTA(I) for IOQM | Per student | Rs 300, or Rs 180 for students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. The organiser's published figure, not ours. No separate fee was found for RMO or INMO |
Two things follow. First, this is one of the very few olympiads in India a family can enter without a school: the individual online registration for IOQM is stated on the organiser's own site, and home-schooled students are explicitly eligible. Second, everything after IOQM is a proof paper, and a proof paper is a different exam from anything a school sets. Three hours for six questions means thirty minutes per problem, most of it thinking, and the marks go to the written argument.
A naming trap to avoid: this pathway leads to the International Mathematical Olympiad, the contest between national teams. The SOF "IMO" is a separate, school-based, multiple-choice exam run by a private foundation, with its own preparation page. A search for "IMO preparation" mixes the two; the difference is a year of the wrong practice.
Q2. What do the papers actually test?
The organisers say success "depends more on clarity of thought and problem-solving ability" than on syllabus coverage. Each area below is a way of thinking that school maths touches and then abandons.
Number theory
The area most IOQM and RMO problems begin in: modular arithmetic, factorisation, the pigeonhole idea, Diophantine equations. School teaches the vocabulary; the olympiad asks you to prove something with it. We start here because a student can see progress within weeks.
Geometry
RMO and INMO geometry is synthetic: no coordinates unless you choose them, and the solution usually turns on one construction nobody told you to draw. We teach the standard configurations, then the habit of drawing large, drawing accurately and asking what the diagram is hiding.
Algebra
Not the algebra of solving for x, but of showing a statement holds for every x. AM-GM and its relatives, polynomial identities, and functional equations where the first move is substituting something clever. This is where students most often know the tool and cannot see when to use it.
Combinatorics
Counting arguments, extremal ideas, invariants that never change no matter what move is made, and games with a winning strategy. The area where a student with no special training can sometimes solve an INMO problem, and the area where a memorised method is least use.
Question counts, marks and the qualification cutoffs for each stage are published by HBCSE and MTA(I) on their own sites, which we send families to rather than reproduce. Every student sees the real IOQM and RMO papers for recent years in the first month, from the organisers' archives, with a clock. A Class 8 student still building the base takes middle school mathematics alongside, and students who also sit the American contests use the AMC and AIME course.
Q3. Why the proof is a different skill from the answer
IOQM asks for a number. RMO asks for a proof. Here is one idea, the pigeonhole principle, in both costumes, and what each paper wants from the student.
How many positive integers up to 100 are divisible by 3 or by 5? By 3: 33. By 5: 20. By both (by 15): 6. 33 + 20 - 6 = 47. Answer: 47. Bubble it in. # Correct, fast, and the paper asks # for nothing more. This is the # whole of the IOQM skill.
Inclusion and exclusion, done in the head, marked by a machine. A student who can do forty of these in the time given qualifies. Nothing here would earn a single mark on RMO.
Prove that among any five integers, some three have a sum divisible by 3. Every integer leaves remainder 0, 1 or 2 on division by 3. Five integers, three remainders: some remainder appears at least twice (pigeonhole). Case 1: some remainder appears three times; those three sum to 0 mod 3. Case 2: no remainder appears three times, so all three remainders appear; pick one of each: 0+1+2 = 3. Either way the sum is divisible by 3.
Same principle, and now the student must name the cases, show they cover everything, and write it so a stranger agrees. That paragraph is what the second class every week is for.
A student who reaches RMO on IOQM speed alone usually meets this wall in the first twenty minutes of the paper. The plan below moves proof writing to the second month rather than the last, because the writing is the slower skill to build.
Q4. How does the batch prepare?
Two live classes a week. One on an area of the syllabus and its standard ideas, one on problem solving with a clock and, from the second month, a written proof marked the way HBCSE marks.
Sat alone, timed, then walked through together. It shows the teacher which of the four areas will carry the student and which will not, and it shows you honestly where your child stands. The plan for that student is written from it.
One area at a time, the standard ideas of each taught as ideas rather than tricks, with a short set of problems after every class that the teacher marks before the next one. Students in Classes 8 to 10 work through the foundation course alongside; Classes 11 and 12 go straight to the olympiad course.
Choosing what to prove, naming cases, showing the cases are exhaustive, and writing so that a marker who has never met the student agrees. For RMO and INMO qualifiers this becomes half of every class.
Past IOQM papers with an OMR sheet and the real clock; past RMO papers at three hours for six questions. Every paper is reviewed problem by problem in the next class, including the problems nobody attempted, which are usually the ones that teach most.
RMO qualifiers move to a block aimed at 17 January: INMO papers under four-and-a-half-hour conditions. Students who narrowly miss carry on toward the next IOQM with the same teacher, which is how most olympiad students actually get there.
Timings are after-school and weekend slots in Indian Standard Time, fixed on the call once we know the class. Families abroad on the Indian syllabus join the same batches, with one honest caveat we will repeat on the call: the exams themselves are sat in India only.
Q5. Is this batch right for my child?
A Class 8 to 12 student who is strong at school maths, has sat IOQM or intends to, and wants to write RMO or INMO as a prepared candidate. A student who has qualified for RMO on 15 November and needs proof writing built quickly. A family that wants the preparation to leave real mathematical thinking behind, whatever the result.
A student who topped a school-level olympiad such as the SOF exam and wants the real pathway. A home-schooled student, who is explicitly eligible for IOQM. A student in Class 8 or 9 on the JEE foundation course who is ready for problems without a formula.
A family living abroad who cannot travel to an Indian exam centre, because the organisers allow no other way to sit it and we will not pretend otherwise. A student whose school sits the SOF olympiad and who wants a multiple-choice paper, who needs our SOF IMO page instead. A family looking for a crash session the week before RMO.
Q6. What does it cost?

Questions parents ask
No. IOQM is the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics, the first stage of the national programme run by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India) and HBCSE that selects India's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The SOF IMO is a school-based multiple-choice exam run by a private foundation, open to Classes 1 to 12, with its own dates and its own preparation page on this site. Same three letters, different exams, different kinds of preparation.
Yes. The organiser's own FAQ says you may register "either through a registered Centre or individually through the online registration portal," and home-schooled and open-schooling students are eligible. The exam is still sat in person at a centre in India on the published date. RMO and INMO have no separate registration; a student reaches them by qualifying from the stage before.
Students in Classes 8 to 12 within a birth-date window the organiser publishes each cycle; for IOQM 2026 it was students born between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2014. A Class 12 student stays eligible until they have passed the Class XII board examination; after that they are out, even after a gap year. The next cycle's window will be on ioqm.mtai.org.in when it opens.
RMO 2026 is on Sunday 15 November 2026 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, and INMO is on Sunday 17 January 2027 from 12:00 to 4:30 PM, as published by HBCSE. IOQM 2026 was sat on 6 September 2026. The dates for the next IOQM were not yet published when this page was written; the 2026 pattern had centre registration in June, individual registration from late June to late July and the exam in early September.
Only by travelling. The organiser states that "IOQM 2026 Examination Centres are available only within India" and that students residing outside India "must travel to India and appear at an Examination Centre located in India," where they are placed under the Delhi (NCR) region for RMO selection. We prepare students anywhere; we cannot change where the paper is sat.
IOQM is an offline paper answered on an OMR sheet with no negative marking: the student writes answers, not arguments. RMO is six questions in three hours and "each question requires writing detailed proof"; INMO is six questions in four and a half hours. A student can be very fast at IOQM and score little on RMO, which is why proof writing starts in the second month of our plan rather than after the result.
The organisers name number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics, and exclude calculus and statistics. They also say the problems test "logical reasoning, creativity, and mathematical thinking rather than routine application of formulas," which matches our experience: the student who knows every formula and has never proved anything is the one the paper is built to catch.
Yes. HBCSE and MTA(I) publish past papers, and we use them for placement, weekly practice and full timed rehearsals, then send families to the organisers' own archives rather than reproducing papers here. Every paper a student sits is reviewed problem by problem in the next class.
It helps with both, in different ways. The number theory, algebra and geometry habits raise a JEE student's ceiling, and many of our Class 8 to 10 olympiad students are on the JEE foundation course at the same time. For the American AMC and AIME, the problem-solving transfers directly and our AMC page covers the entry route; the proof writing is the extra skill only the Indian pathway and the UK olympiads demand.
A mentor calls within a few hours, asks which class your child is in and whether they have sat IOQM or qualified for RMO, and books a free demo class at a time that suits you. The demo is a real session: two or three olympiad problems at the student's level, one of them written up as a proof together, with the teacher showing the reasoning rather than the answer key. There is no card, no enrolment fee and no pressure on the call.
Start
Book it and your child joins a live session at their level: one IOQM-style question with a clock, one RMO-style question thought through out loud and written up as a proof, and the honest verdict on which of the four areas needs work first. You watch from the next chair. If you would rather see a full 45-60 minute class today or tomorrow, book a Priority Live Demo instead; its fee is adjusted against your first month if you enrol.
Read first instead? The maths challenges guide compares the contests Indian students sit, and the SOF IMO page explains the other exam that shares the name.
