Who packs more crayons, and how many more?

How most tutoring handles it: "Multiply 4 times 6. Multiply 3 times 8. Subtract." The child follows, gets 24 and 24, answers "equal", and has learned nothing they can reuse.

How our mentor teaches it: First, draw it. The child sketches 4 bars labelled 6 and 3 bars labelled 8. Before any arithmetic, the mentor asks: "Without counting, could they be equal? How would you check with the bars?" The child notices they can compare groups: Maya has one more box, Leo has bigger boxes. Now the multiplication has a purpose.

Nearly every struggling 3rd grader answers 1/4, "because 4 is bigger."

Why the error is logical: for eight years, bigger digits meant bigger numbers. The child is not being careless; they are applying the only rule they have ever known. Telling them "flip it for fractions" adds a trick and deepens the confusion.

How our mentor rebuilds it: two identical chocolate bars on screen. One is shared between 3 friends, one between 4. "Which friends get more chocolate?" Every child answers instantly, the fewer the friends, the bigger the piece. The insight is theirs before any notation appears.

Then both fractions go on the number line, and the child sees that 1/3 lives further right. From that day, fraction comparison is reasoning, not guessing, and equivalent fractions in grade 4 have something to stand on.

The pattern worth noticing: the two ideas that decide the year, equal groups and unit fractions, are both taught in narrow windows. A child who is supported before those windows, rather than rescued after, has a completely different grade 3.

"Multiplication makes bigger"

True in grade 3, fatal in grade 5 when 1/2 × 8 arrives. We teach multiplication as "groups of" from day one so the rule never needs unlearning.

"The bigger denominator wins"

1/8 read as bigger than 1/3 because 8 beats 3. Fixed with the chocolate-bar sharing argument and the number line, permanently.

"Subtract the smaller digit"

In 52 − 38, the child does 8 − 2 in the ones column. A place-value gap, not carelessness, and it needs regrouping rebuilt, not red ink.

"Area and perimeter are the same thing"

Both involve rectangles, so they blur. We have children build different rectangles with equal perimeters and watch the areas change.

"The answer is always the two numbers combined"

Word-problem guessing: see two numbers, add them. Cured by drawing the story before touching arithmetic, every single time.

"Zero is nothing, so it does nothing"

Then 407 gets written as 47. The zero's job as a place-holder is one ten-minute concrete lesson that saves a year of digit errors.

One more, because word problems

How many books are left?

What struggling children do: grab 8 and 9, get 17 or 72, then stop, or subtract 35 from 72 without knowing why. The problem is not arithmetic; it is that nobody taught them to see the story.

How our mentor teaches it: before any numbers, the child retells the story in their own words and draws the bar: one long bar of books, cut into "sold" and "left". Only then do they decide what they need first, the total, and why.

Step 1: find the total:  8 × 9 = 72 books
Step 2: remove what sold:  72 − 35 = 37 books left
Check:  37 + 35 = 72 ✓

The check line matters most: children who verify their own answers stop fearing word problems, because they can tell by themselves when they are right. That self-trust is the real deliverable of grade 3 tutoring.

How do I know if my 3rd grader is actually behind?

Check three markers, not the report card: can they explain what 4 × 6 means with a picture, place 1/3 on a number line, and solve a two-step word problem without grabbing random numbers? How long does it take to catch up?

Honestly: it depends on how many ideas are missing, not how many worksheets get done. A child missing just the fraction concept often turns around within a month of twice-weekly classes. A child who has been guessing since grade 1 needs a full term. Should my child memorize times tables or not?

The homework looks nothing like how I learned math. Why?
