Why the proportion tutoring failed: proportions are built on fraction equivalence. Test it: can he explain why 3/4 equals 6/8, with a picture? He cannot; he multiplies top and bottom because "that is the rule". One rung further down: can he place 3/4 and 6/8 on a number line? Shaky. There is the real floor, and it is a grade 4 idea.
