The short answer

UK GCSE Computer Science is set by three boards that share a name and set different exams. AQA 8525 has Paper 1, Computational Thinking and Programming Skills, a two-hour written exam worth 90 marks and 50 per cent, and Paper 2, Computing Concepts, one hour 45 minutes, also 90 marks and 50 per cent. OCR J277 sets two written papers of one hour 30 minutes and 80 marks each. Edexcel sets 1CP2. Because the papers differ in length, marks and command words, revising from the wrong board's past papers is the commonest avoidable problem in the subject. The first question, before anything else

## Which board? Because the three GCSEs are not the same exam

AQA, OCR and Edexcel share a subject name and set different papers, of different lengths, worth different marks, weighted differently.

AQA 8525 sets a two-hour Paper 1 on computational thinking and programming worth ninety marks, and a one-hour-forty-five Paper 2 on computing concepts also worth ninety marks. OCR J277 sets two papers of an hour and a half, eighty marks each. Edexcel sets its own 1CP2. Each is fifty per cent, and none of them is interchangeable with another.

Which means a student revising from the wrong board's past papers is rehearsing an exam they will never open. They practise the wrong paper length, the wrong mark distribution and, worst, the wrong command words, because the boards phrase questions differently and mark them to different schemes.

This happens more than you would expect. Past papers are freely available online, revision sites rarely label which board they are for, and a student searching for help finds whichever board's material ranks highest rather than their own. Nobody notices until a mock comes back oddly.

So the first thing we ask a family is which board the school has entered the student for. If you do not know it, the school office does, and finding out before the first class is the single most useful five minutes available in this subject.

Notice what the difference in Paper 1 length means in practice. An AQA candidate sits a two-hour programming paper, which is a genuinely long time to sustain concentration on code, and an OCR candidate sits ninety minutes. A student moving school between Year 10 and Year 11, which happens more often than schools like to admit, can find themselves preparing for a different exam halfway through, and that is a re-plan rather than a tweak.

Where marks are lost

## Six things that cost GCSE Computer Science students grades

The first one is on this list because it is genuinely the most common, and it is entirely preventable.

### Revising from another board past papers

The most common and the most avoidable. Wrong paper length, wrong mark distribution, wrong command words, and a mock result that makes no sense. Five minutes with the school office prevents an entire wasted term.

### Understanding code in class and freezing at a blank page

Following a worked example is a different action from producing an answer, and only the second one is examined. Every programming session here starts from nothing, on paper, before anything is typed.

### Tracing code in the head

A large share of Paper 1 marks turn on predicting what a fragment produces. Students who write a two-column trace table are faster and considerably more accurate than students who do it mentally, and it is a three-week habit.

### Treating the theory paper as the easy one

It is half the qualification, and its extended-response questions have the widest mark spread on either paper. It is where prepared students gain most ground, and it is the one most often left until spring.

### Ignoring the command word

State, describe, explain and evaluate ask for different things, and the boards phrase them differently. A correct idea written in the wrong register does not always score, which students find out only when work is marked to the real scheme.

### Doing binary arithmetic slowly

Data representation questions are reliable marks for a student who converts quickly and a time sink for one who does not. Speed here buys minutes for the longer questions later in the paper.

## How we sequence GCSE Computer Science across two years

Two live classes a week, one to one or in a batch of five to eight, with past papers from the student's own board marked against the real mark scheme.

1. #### Year 10 term 1: Python from a blank page, and trace tables

  Real programming, written by hand before it is typed, plus the two-column trace table drilled until it is the automatic first move. These two habits carry more Paper 1 marks than any single topic on the specification.
2. #### Year 10 term 2: data representation, at speed

  Binary, hexadecimal, images, sound and compression, with the arithmetic done by hand quickly. Slow conversion is a hidden tax on every later question in the paper.
3. #### Year 10 term 3: computer systems, networks and security

  The systems half of the theory paper, taught as things that relate to each other rather than as vocabulary, because that is what the longer questions reward.
4. #### Year 11 term 1: subprograms, files, SQL and the impact content

  The remaining specification content, including the ethical and legal material that students skim and examiners weight heavily in extended responses.
5. #### Year 11 term 2: your board papers, in your board format

  Full papers of the correct length and mark total, marked to the real scheme. This is where a student discovers which of their habits the examiner does not reward, with time left to change them.
6. #### Year 11 term 3: targeted repair on the weaker paper

  The final weeks aimed at whichever paper the mocks exposed rather than split evenly between them, plus short daily retrieval instead of long revision sessions.

## UK GCSE against Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science

International-school families ask this constantly, and the answer changes how a student should be taught.

The difference that matters most is how coding answers are given. UK GCSE generally expects answers in a real programming language, most commonly Python. Cambridge [IGCSE Computer Science 0478](/cambridge-igcse-computer-science-tuition) requires pseudocode for most coding answers and awards no marks for program code outside one specific question. A student moving between the two systems has to unlearn a habit, not just learn new content.

Being straight about it

## What we will not tell you about GCSE Computer Science

**We do not guarantee a grade.** Nobody can, and a provider who offers one is selling something they cannot deliver. What a teacher controls is coverage, marked past-paper practice on the correct board, and how many programming questions the student has started from a blank page.

**We are not your child's school.** Entry, board, tier and internal deadlines are the school's. We teach alongside them, and where our advice differs from theirs on logistics, they are right.

**We will not pretend the theory paper is the easy one.** Families often assume Paper 2 is the one to leave. It is half the qualification, its extended responses have the widest mark spread on the paper, and it is where prepared students gain most on unprepared ones.

**We will tell you if the timing is wrong.** A student starting in the spring of Year 11 can improve substantially one to one, and cannot cover two years of content. We will say which of those we are doing.

### Start a programming question from a blank page

Which is the action the exam tests, and a different one from following a worked example in class.

### Produce a trace table without being told to

As the automatic first move on any question asking what a fragment outputs, which turns a guess into reliable marks.

### Convert between binary, denary and hexadecimal quickly

Fast enough that data representation questions cost seconds rather than the minutes the longer questions needed.

### Answer to the command word and to the mark allocation

Recognising that describe and explain want different things, and that a four-mark question is not answered in one line.

### Write a test plan with normal, boundary and erroneous data

Which is examined directly on every board and is among the most learnable marks on the specification.

### Match a security threat to the correct mitigation

Naming both, in the specification's own vocabulary, which is how those questions are marked.

### Structure an extended response that reaches the top band

Both sides and then a supported judgement, on the questions with the widest mark spread on the paper.

## What UK families ask about GCSE Computer Science

### Do you teach AQA, OCR or Edexcel?

All three, and separately, because they are different exams. AQA 8525 sets a two-hour Paper 1 worth 90 marks and a one-hour-45 Paper 2 also worth 90. OCR J277 sets two papers of an hour and a half, 80 marks each. Edexcel sets 1CP2. Batches are single-board, and one to one follows whichever board your child is entered for.

### What if we do not know our board?

The school office does, and finding out takes five minutes. It is genuinely the most useful five minutes available in this subject, because revising from another board's past papers means practising the wrong paper length, the wrong mark distribution and the wrong command words.

### How much does the tutoring cost?

A batch of five to eight students is USD 100 a month and one to one is USD 150 a month, billed in US dollars, the same figures in every country we teach outside India. No enrolment fee, no minimum term, and the first class is free without a card.

### Which programming language do you teach?

Python, which is what the overwhelming majority of UK schools use for this GCSE. If your child's school teaches something else we work in that instead, because consistency with what they see in class matters more than our preference.

### My child follows the lesson but cannot start a question. Is that common?

It is the single most common report we get, and it is exactly what this course is built to fix. Following a worked example and producing an answer from nothing are different actions, and only the second is examined. Every programming session here starts from a blank page, on paper, before anything is typed.

### Is Paper 2 really as important as Paper 1?

Yes, and families routinely underestimate it. It is half the qualification, and its extended-response questions have the widest mark spread on either paper. It is where a prepared student gains most ground, and it is the paper most often left until the spring of Year 11.

### Are the classes live?

Every class is live, one to one or in a batch of five to eight students, taught from India to students worldwide. We do not sell recordings in place of classes, because a recording cannot watch a student trace a loop wrongly and stop them in the moment.

### When should we start?

Year 10 gives the best outcome by a clear margin, because programming fluency and trace-table habits take months rather than weeks. A Year 11 start works, and one to one is the right format for it, but we will be honest that we are improving a grade rather than covering two years.

### Do you mark past papers?

Yes, against the published mark scheme rather than against what the student meant. Students routinely write a correct idea in words the scheme does not credit, and discovering that in January is worth far more than discovering it in May.

### How is this different from Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science?

UK GCSE grades 9 to 1 and generally expects coding answers in a real language, usually Python. Cambridge IGCSE 0478 grades A star to G and requires pseudocode for most coding answers, awarding no marks for program code outside one specific question. A student moving between the two has to unlearn a habit, not just learn content.

### Can you help with the school's programming project?

We teach the skills and question the design. We do not write code that will be submitted as a student's own work. Where a school sets internal programming tasks, our job is to make the student able to do them, which is a different service from doing them.

### My child is home educated and sitting it privately. Can you help?

Yes, and one to one is usually right for that, because there is no school scheme of work to align with and the whole specification has to be covered deliberately. You will need to arrange a centre for the entry itself, which is separate from the teaching.

### How much work is there between classes?

Programming practice and past-paper questions, marked by the teacher. Two to three hours a week in Year 10, more in Year 11. Work that is not marked is not worth setting, which is why batches are capped at eight students.

### What happens in the free first class?

A short diagnostic rather than a sales call. Usually one small programming question from a blank page and one binary conversion, because between them they show whether the risk is Paper 1 or Paper 2. You get a straight assessment afterwards, including if the honest answer is to wait until Year 10.

### What happens after we send the form?

A mentor calls you at a reasonable hour to arrange the free class. Nothing is charged and no card is requested. Have the exam board to hand if you can, because the honest recommendation depends on it more than on anything else you can tell us.
