> STAAR Algebra 1 EOC prep from the TEA blueprint: 50 questions, five reporting categories, the 2026 to 2027 windows, the graphing calculator rule and practice.

In short

The STAAR Algebra I EOC is the Texas Education Agency’s end-of-course exam for Algebra I, one of five EOCs Texas students must pass to graduate. TEA’s blueprint gives it 50 questions worth 59 points across five reporting categories, with a graphing calculator required throughout. In 2026 to 2027 it runs in December, April and June. Modern Age Coders teaches it live online, in a batch or 1-on-1, through our Algebra Foundations course.

Algebra I, taught properly

## Three courses for the Algebra I EOC

Start with the course that matches where the student is, not where the calendar says they should be.

The blueprint

## How many questions are on the STAAR Algebra 1 EOC?

Fifty, worth 59 points. TEA’s blueprint, effective since the 2022 to 2023 academic year, splits them across five reporting categories.

| Reporting category | Readiness standards | Questions | Points |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Number and algebraic methods | 2 | 9 to 11 | 9 to 14 |
| 2. Describing and graphing linear functions, equations and inequalities | 3 | 10 to 12 | 10 to 16 |
| 3. Writing and solving linear functions, equations and inequalities | 5 | 12 to 14 | 12 to 18 |
| 4. Quadratic functions and equations | 4 | 9 to 11 | 9 to 14 |
| 5. Exponential functions and equations | 2 | 5 to 7 | 5 to 9 |
| Total (as published) | 16 | 50 | 59 |

### Where the weight sits

Categories 2 and 3 are both about linear functions, and together they carry 22 to 26 of the 50 questions. Linear work is roughly half the exam before quadratics or exponentials appear.

Of the 50 questions, 41 are worth one point and 9 are two-point questions that are not multiple choice, so the student types or plots the answer.

### The sixteen readiness standards

TEA’s assessed-curriculum document marks sixteen Algebra I TEKS as readiness standards, from A.2A (domain and range of a linear function) to A.11B (laws of exponents). They include A.8A, which asks students to solve quadratics “by factoring, taking square roots, completing the square, and applying the quadratic formula”.

The process standards, such as justifying a solution, are not a separate category: TEA builds them into questions across all five.

Graduation

## Do you have to pass the Algebra 1 EOC to graduate in Texas?

Yes, unless a substitute assessment or another route applies. TEA lists Algebra I among five end-of-course exams a student must pass for the testing part of graduation.

### What TEA says

TEA’s high school graduation page: “Students must pass five end-of-course assessments to meet the testing requirements for graduation. Those tests cover Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology and U.S. History.”

House Bill 8 changes one of the five. The updated HB 8 FAQ says English II is no longer a graduation requirement for students who graduate after August 31, 2027. Nothing in it removes Algebra I.

### Substitutes and second chances

TEA’s family guide notes that other assessments, “such as PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP, or TSIA”, may satisfy graduation requirements in place of STAAR EOCs, and the HB 8 FAQ confirms TSIA2 stays available as a substitute for Algebra I.

A student who does not pass may, if eligible, use the individual graduation committee process the HB 8 FAQ describes. The school counselor knows which route fits a given student.

| Level | Algebra I scale score | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Approaches Grade Level | 3550 | Passing |
| Meets Grade Level | 4000 | High likelihood of success in the next course |
| Masters Grade Level | 4345 | Success expected with little or no intervention |

One detail on the same TEA table is worth knowing: “The standard in place when a student first takes an EOC assessment is the standard that will be maintained throughout the student’s school career.” A student retaking Algebra I is measured against the bar that applied at the first attempt.

Three windows

## When can you take the STAAR Algebra 1 EOC in 2026 to 2027?

Three times. TEA’s 2026 to 2027 testing calendar opens an Algebra I window in December, in April and in June.

| Window | Dates | Results to districts |
| --- | --- | --- |
| December | November 30 to December 11, 2026 | January 5, 2027 |
| Spring | April 19 to April 30, 2027 | May 21, 2027 |
| Summer | June 14 to June 25, 2027 | July 20, 2027 |

### Choosing a window

Most students sit the spring window at the end of their Algebra I course. December and June serve retakes and students who finished the course early or need another try.

June 2027 comes a few weeks after spring results land on May 21, which leaves time for a short, focused block of lessons on the categories that cost the most points.

### From 2027 to 2028: SST Algebra I

Under House Bill 8, the Student Success Tool replaces STAAR from the 2027 to 2028 school year. TEA’s draft SST Algebra I summative blueprint, effective from the spring 2028 administration, lists 39 to 41 questions worth 48 points.

The HB 8 FAQ confirms that December and June testing opportunities continue, and that beginning-of-year and middle-of-year Algebra I tests will be optional for high schools.

Districts set the exact days.

The calculator

## What calculator is allowed on the Algebra 1 STAAR test?

A graphing calculator is required for the whole test, but with several of its functions switched off. Knowing which ones changes how a student should practise.

| Rule | What TEA requires |
| --- | --- |
| Access | Each student must have a graphing calculator throughout the entire test |
| Must be disabled | Polynomial root finders and simultaneous equation solvers |
| Also disabled | Graphing of inequalities that reads the symbol automatically, graphing implicit equations, geometry functions |
| Computer algebra (CAS) | Not allowed unless the CAS is disabled |
| Memory | Cleared to factory default before and after testing |
| Phones and watches | Calculator apps on smartphones and smartwatches not allowed |

### Why this matters

The two most tempting shortcuts, a polynomial solver for quadratics and a system solver for simultaneous equations, are exactly the ones that must be removed. A student who leans on them all year meets the exam without them.

The calculator still graphs, so a student can draw a quadratic and look at where it meets the axis, or graph two lines and read the crossing point. That is a check, and it is allowed.

### Our rule in class

Solve by algebra first, then use the graph to confirm. If the two disagree, one of them is wrong and finding which one is the lesson.

TEA also says students should use the same type of calculator they use in class. We teach on the model the student will carry into the exam room.

Source: [STAAR Calculator Policy](https://tea.texas.gov/data-reports/staar/staar-calculator-policy.pdf), TEA, read 31 October 2026. TEA also publishes [Algebra I reference materials and graph paper](https://tea.texas.gov/data-reports/staar/staar-mathematics-resources) used during the test.

Worked examples

## Two Algebra I problems, each checked three ways

Our own problems at the level of the readiness standards A.8A and A.9C. They are not released STAAR items.

1. **A quadratic, our problem.** Solve 2x² + 7x - 15 = 0.
2. **Equation.** Look for two numbers that multiply to 2 x (-15) = -30 and add to 7: they are 10 and -3. Split the middle: 2x² + 10x - 3x - 15 = 2x(x + 5) - 3(x + 5) = (2x - 3)(x + 5).
3. **Solve.** 2x - 3 = 0 gives x = 3/2; x + 5 = 0 gives x = -5.
4. **Table.** Substitute: 2(1.5)² + 7(1.5) - 15 = 4.5 + 10.5 - 15 = 0, and 2(25) - 35 - 15 = 0. Both work.
5. **Graph.** On the graphing calculator, y = 2x² + 7x - 15 crosses the x-axis at -5 and 1.5, with the vertex between them. Three representations, one answer.

1. **An exponential, our problem.** A town of 8,000 people grows by 3 percent a year. Write a function and estimate the population after 5 years.
2. **Equation.** Growing by 3 percent means multiplying by 1.03 each year, so f(x) = 8000(1.03)x, in the a times b to the x form A.9C describes.
3. **Calculate.** 1.035 is about 1.1593, so f(5) is about 9,274 people.
4. **Check the size.** Simple growth of 3 percent of 8,000 for 5 years would add 1,200, giving 9,200. Compound growth should be a little more, and 9,274 is.

STAAR rewards this habit because it asks the same idea in several dresses: a table in one question, a graph in the next, a word problem after that. A student who can move between the three never meets a question that looks new.

Practice set

## Ten Algebra I practice questions, one per readiness skill

Our own questions, each tied to a readiness standard. Try them without the calculator first, then check with it.

| TEKS | Question | Answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A.2C | Write the equation of the line through (0, 4) and (2, 10). | y = 3x + 4 |
| A.3B | A table shows (1, 5), (3, 11), (5, 17). What is the rate of change? | 3 |
| A.3C | What are the x-intercept and y-intercept of 2x + 5y = 20? | (10, 0) and (0, 4) |
| A.3D | Is (1, 1) in the solution set of y < 2x - 3? | No: 1 is not less than -1 |
| A.5A | Solve 4(x - 2) = 2x + 6. | x = 7 |
| A.5C | Solve x + y = 10 and x - y = 4. | x = 7, y = 3 |
| A.7A | Where is the vertex of y = (x - 3)² - 4, and what are its zeros? | Vertex (3, -4); zeros 1 and 5 |
| A.8A | Solve x² - 9x + 20 = 0. | x = 4 or x = 5 |
| A.10E | Factor x² + 10x + 25. | (x + 5)² |
| A.11B | Simplify (x3)2 / x4. | x² |

TEA releases its own Algebra I tests with answer keys and rationales on the [STAAR Released Test Questions](https://tea.texas.gov/data-reports/staar/staar-released-test-questions) page, and the [Practice Test Site](https://txpt.cambiumtds.com/student/) runs them in the real interface, calculator included. We use those for full rehearsals in the last three weeks.

A plan

## How to prepare for the Algebra 1 EOC, step by step

Our plan for a student starting about ten weeks before the April 19, 2027 window. Compress it for June.

1. **Weeks 1 and 2: one full released test, scored by category.** The five category scores decide the order of everything after.
2. **Weeks 3 to 5: linear functions until they are automatic.** Slope from any representation, writing equations, inequalities on a graph, systems by elimination. This is roughly half the exam.
3. **Weeks 6 and 7: quadratics.** Factoring, the quadratic formula, vertex and zeros, and how a, c and d move the parent graph (A.7C).
4. **Week 8: exponentials.** Growth and decay written as a times b to the x, with the y-intercept and the asymptote read off the graph.
5. **Weeks 9 and 10: rehearsal.** Two full tests on the Practice Test Site with the student’s own calculator, then review of every two-point question missed.

### If spring did not go to plan

The June window opens on June 14, 2027, about three weeks after spring results. Use the category breakdown from the score report and spend those weeks only on the two weakest categories.

### If the student is in grade 8

TEA’s flowchart “What STAAR Test Does a Student Take?” says a grade 3 to 8 student in a high school course with an EOC takes that EOC instead of the grade-level test. Its footnote adds that accelerated students who passed an EOC in middle school “are required to take the ACT or the SAT in high school to fulfill federal testing requirements.”

STAAR now, SST next

## Algebra I on STAAR and on the Student Success Tool

Two blueprints side by side: the current STAAR one and TEA’s draft for the SST summative test from spring 2028.

| Feature | STAAR Algebra I (now) | SST Algebra I (from spring 2028) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Questions | 50 | 39 to 41 |
| Points | 59 | 48 |
| Reported groups | Five reporting categories | Five strands, no strand subscores |
| Question types | Multiple choice plus non-multiple-choice types | Inline choice, multiple choice, multiselect |
| December and June retakes | Yes | Yes, per the HB 8 FAQ |

### For parents

The algebra is the same: the five strands keep the names of today’s categories. What changes is the length and the mix of question types.

A student finishing Algebra I in 2026 to 2027 takes STAAR. One finishing in 2027 to 2028 takes SST.

### For students

Linear functions are about half of either test. Get those right and the rest is far easier.

Practise with the calculator you will use, and practise without the solver apps it will not have.

Algebra I EOC questions

## STAAR Algebra 1 EOC: what students and parents ask

### How many questions are on the STAAR Algebra 1 EOC?

TEA's blueprint gives 50 questions worth 59 points: 41 one-point questions and 9 two-point questions that are not multiple choice. They come from five reporting categories.

### What score do you need to pass the Algebra 1 EOC in Texas?

A scale score of 3550 reaches Approaches Grade Level, which counts as passing. Meets Grade Level starts at 4000 and Masters Grade Level at 4345, per TEA's EOC performance standards.

### Is the Algebra 1 EOC required to graduate in Texas?

Yes. TEA lists Algebra I among the five end-of-course assessments students must pass for graduation testing, though approved substitutes such as TSIA2, SAT or ACT can satisfy it in some cases.

### When is the Algebra 1 EOC in 2026 to 2027?

TEA's calendar has three windows: November 30 to December 11, 2026; April 19 to April 30, 2027; and June 14 to June 25, 2027. Your school picks the days within each window.

### Can you use a calculator on the Algebra 1 STAAR?

Yes, a graphing calculator is required for the whole test. Polynomial root finders, simultaneous equation solvers and computer algebra features must be disabled.

### What topics are on the Algebra 1 EOC?

Five categories: number and algebraic methods, describing and graphing linear functions, writing and solving linear functions, quadratic functions, and exponential functions. The two linear categories together make up roughly half the questions.

### What happens if my child fails the Algebra 1 EOC?

They can retake it in a later window, and TEA keeps December and June windows under the new system too. The passing bar stays the one in force at the first attempt, and the counselor can explain substitutes or an individual graduation committee.

### Is the Algebra 1 EOC changing?

From the 2027 to 2028 school year the Student Success Tool replaces STAAR. TEA's draft SST Algebra I summative blueprint has 39 to 41 questions worth 48 points, using inline choice, multiple choice and multiselect.

### When are your Algebra I classes?

Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays. We schedule on Central Time.

### Are you affiliated with TEA?

No. We are an independent online school. We teach the Algebra I TEKS, quote TEA's published documents and send students to TEA's own released tests for rehearsal.
