The Paisley project

## The 37% rule and Paisley sunshine: optimal stopping meets real data

A famous rule for choosing, 52 years of records, and one assumption that decides everything.

The learner downloads the Met Office's historic data file for the Paisley station and keeps the 52 complete years from 1959 to 2010, each with twelve monthly sunshine totals and none missing. May was the sunniest month in 27 of those years, June in 13, July in 5, August in 4 and April in 3. The game: see the months one at a time, choose one, and win if it is that year's sunniest. The strategy: skip the first few months, note the highest total among them, then take the first month that beats it.

| Months skipped first | Months in random order | Months in calendar order |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0 (take the first) | 8.1% | 0% |
| 3 | 37.8% | 19.2% |
| 4 | 38.8% | 65.4% |
| 5 | 39.2% | 36.5% |
| 6 | 37.3% | 13.5% |

Shuffle the months and the theory holds: skipping four or five of the twelve, about the 37% the rule suggests, wins close to 39% of the time, far better than the 8.1% from grabbing the first month. In calendar order the picture changes completely. Skip January to April and the first month to beat them is usually May, which is so often the sunniest that the rule wins 65.4% of years. Skip one month too many, though, and May has already gone by: success drops to 36.5%, and to 13.5% if six are skipped. A person who simply always chooses May wins 51.9% of the time without looking at anything.

The 37% rule is optimal only when the order is random and nothing else is known. Real data rarely looks like that. The skill worth learning is to ask what a rule assumes, then test those assumptions against the data in front of you.

### P5 to P7

Turn over cards one at a time, try to stop on the biggest, and compare skipping two, four and six.

### S1 to S3

Read the Paisley sunshine file in Python and find each year's sunniest month.

### S4 and up

Simulate the stopping rule on shuffled and real orders and explain the difference.

### Met Office records, our simulation

Sunshine totals are from the Met Office historic station data for Paisley, published under the Open Government Licence. The games, the shuffles and all the percentages are our own calculations.

Rules and AI

## What this teaches about vibe coding and AI agents

Every rule of thumb smuggles in assumptions; find them before you lean on it.

| In the sunshine project | When AI suggests a method |
| --- | --- |
| Random order gave about 39% | Textbook results hold under textbook conditions |
| Calendar order gave 65.4% or 13.5% | The same rule can shine or fail on real data |
| Always choosing May won 51.9% | Domain knowledge can beat a clever general rule |
| Skipping one extra month missed May | Small settings can matter enormously |
| 52 years gave a fair test | Check a rule on real history before trusting it |

Ask an AI assistant how to make a choose-once decision and it will very likely recite the 37% rule, correctly, without asking whether your options arrive in random order. In vibe coding the learner describes a program and an AI writes it; our Paisley learners then test the suggested method on real data before relying on it. AI agents making decisions on your behalf apply rules in the same way, so the assumptions need spelling out. Agents are built once a learner is comfortable in Python, typically from S5 or as an adult, and Copilot Studio agents are one-to-one lessons only. The steps are on our [agents pathway for UK learners](/ai-agents-course-for-students-uk), and the principle on [understand the code, don't copy-paste](/understand-the-code-dont-copy-paste-uk).

Modern Age Coders has no connection with the Met Office, National Records of Scotland or postcodes.io. We used only their open data; the simulation and any errors in it are ours.

## What is the 37% rule, and does it work on real data?

The 37% rule says to look at the first 37% of options without choosing, then take the first one better than all of those; no other strategy beats it on average, but only when the options come in random order.

On 52 years of Paisley sunshine records it picked the sunniest month about 39% of the time with the months shuffled, but between 13.5% and 65.4% in real calendar order depending on how many months were skipped.

Learners who have run that test ask of any rule an AI recommends: what does it assume, and is that true here?

A Paisley S4 who habitually tests a rule before using it will not be misled by a chatbot's confident advice, and Python is where that habit gets built. The longer argument is in [why teenagers should still learn to code in 2026](/blog/is-coding-worth-learning-2026).

How it works

## Ralston to Ferguslie Park, all online

A computer, a webcam and a connection that manages video calls are all that is needed.

### Learner-led coding

Students type, prompt and run every step; the tutor watches the shared screen and asks for reasons.

### Pitched by the trial

The free lesson shows the starting point; SQA courses are noted where relevant.

### Free opening lesson

Lesson one has no charge and ends with a course recommendation.

### Stage-matched classes

Five to ten learners from around the UK at one stage per class.

### Two each week

None during Scottish school holidays.

### Fixed hour

Tutors move with UK clock changes so your time does not shift.

Why online

Five learners at one level, all free on the same evening, rarely live near each other. Over video, distance stops mattering.

FAQ

## Paisley questions

The 37% rule, Paisley sunshine records, Python, vibe coding and how lessons run.

### What is the population of Paisley?

National Records of Scotland estimated 77,270 people in the Paisley locality in mid-2020.

### Are online Python classes available in Paisley?

Yes, live on video for ages 6 to 67 in Paisley and across Renfrewshire.

### What is the secretary problem?

A puzzle about picking the top option from a sequence seen one at a time with no going back. When the order is random, the winning strategy is to skip about 37% and then take the first option that beats all of those skipped.

### Why did the 37% rule behave differently on real months?

Because months come in calendar order, not random order, and May was the sunniest month in 27 of 52 years. The rule assumes nothing is known about the order.

### What does the Paisley project involve?

Reading 52 years of Met Office Paisley sunshine data in Python and testing the skip-then-choose rule on shuffled and real month orders.

### Is vibe coding on offer?

It is, for every age group; learners plan the program themselves and check whatever the AI produces.

### When can learners build AI agents?

Once Python is comfortable, usually from S5 or as adults; Copilot Studio agents are one-to-one only.

### Do you help with National 5 and Higher?

Yes, in Computing Science and Maths, taught for understanding; we never promise grades.

### What do lessons cost?

The first lesson is free. Then USD 100 a month in a group or USD 150 a month privately.

### Do lessons stop in the holidays?

Yes, for Scottish school holidays; just send the dates.
