Four rules tested on The Waste Land Stream 3,071 words through a small memory and count how often each rule already has the next word. The learner takes the Project Gutenberg text of The Waste Land, keeps only the poem itself, and turns it into a stream of 3,071 lower-case words, 1,168 of them different. Words that repeat are the chances for a cache to help: at most 62.0% of the stream could ever be a hit, since each word's first appearance has to be a miss. Four rules decide what to forget when the cache is full. First in, first out (FIFO) drops the oldest word. Least recently used (LRU) drops the word unused for longest. A frequency rule drops the word seen least often so far. And the optimal rule, known as Belady's rule, drops the word that will next be needed furthest in the future, which is only possible here because the whole poem is known in advance. | Cache size (words) | FIFO | LRU | Most frequent | Optimal | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 8 | 11.5% | 12.3% | 20.2% | 31.1% | | 32 | 26.1% | 29.0% | 32.9% | 48.1% | | 128 | 42.0% | 45.9% | 48.7% | 59.5% | | 256 | 48.9% | 51.8% | 53.9% | 62.0% | LRU beats FIFO at every size here, a common reason it is taught first: remembering what was used recently is often a good guess about what will be used next. On this poem, though, the frequency rule beats LRU too, because a few small words dominate. "The" appears 205 times and "and" 107, so a rule that clings to common words keeps winning. The optimal column is not a practical rule, since no real program can see the future, but it shows how much room is left: at 32 words, the ceiling for any rule is 48.1%, against 29.0% for LRU. The lesson is that no eviction rule wins everywhere. A different stream, a web server's requests or an AI agent's tool calls, could reverse the order of FIFO, LRU and frequency. Good engineers measure on their own workload and compare with the optimal bound before choosing. ### Ages 8 to 11 Play a memory game with only three cards allowed on the table and invent a rule for which card to give back. ### Ages 11 to 15 Build a FIFO cache with a Python list and count its hits on the first page of a poem. ### Ages 15 and up Implement LRU with an ordered dictionary, add the optimal rule and compare all four. ### Eliot's poem, our cache The text is the Project Gutenberg edition of The Waste Land by T. Caching and AI ## What this teaches about vibe coding and AI agents Remembering and forgetting are design choices inside every AI tool. | In the poem experiment | In AI tools and agents | | --- | --- | | LRU beat FIFO at every size | Recent context is usually the most useful | | Frequency beat LRU on this poem | The right rule depends on the workload | | Optimal showed the gap to close | Compare against an upper bound, not just a rival | | At most 62.0% could ever hit | Some requests are always new and need real work | | A bigger cache helped every rule | More memory costs more, so measure the gain | AI assistants and agents cache all the time: earlier parts of a long conversation, results from tools, and frequently used documents. What they keep and what they drop changes both their answers and their cost. An LRU cache throws away whatever was used least recently when it runs out of room; AI systems cache to save time and cost. On the Margate word stream LRU beat first-in-first-out at every cache size, but a frequency rule beat LRU, and neither came close to the optimal rule that knows the future. Learners who have built all four know to test a cache on real traffic, which is how AI engineers tune the memory their systems rely on. A Margate teenager who understands caching can reason about speed and cost in any AI tool, and that is a strong reason to learn Python in 2026.
