## Young adults, apartments and the train

Census 2021 QuickStats for the Hurstville suburb against New South Wales and Australia.

| Headline | Hurstville |
| --- | --- |
| Residents | 31,162 |
| Families | 8,232 |
| Private dwellings | 11,976 |
| People per household | 2.8 |

| Measure | Hurstville | NSW | Australia |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Residents aged 20 to 24 | 11.6% (3,606) | 6.1% | 6.2% |
| Flats or apartments among occupied homes | 61.4% (6,467) | 21.7% | 14.2% |
| Train to work on Census day | 13.3% (1,924) | 1.7% | 1.4% |
| Bachelor degree or higher, aged 15 and over | 38.1% (10,337) | 27.8% | 26.3% |

### A young suburb

The median age was 33, and the 20 to 24 age group was almost double its share across the state.

### Rail commuters

Even on a lockdown Census day in August 2021, 1,924 employed residents went to work by train.

### Study

Of residents attending education, 28.4% were at university or other higher education, against 15.3% for NSW.

Signature project

## Proving a shuffle is unfair by counting every possibility

Four stations, Hurstville, Penshurst, Mortdale and Oatley, are shuffled two ways. Because the lists are short, the computer can try every possible sequence of random choices and count exactly what comes out.

| Shuffle | Equally likely runs | Possible orders | Runs per order |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Swap each item with any item | 256 | 24 | 8 to 15, uneven |
| Fisher-Yates | 24 | 24 | Exactly 1 each |

| Order | Runs out of 256 | Chance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Penshurst, Hurstville, Oatley, Mortdale | 15 | 5.86% |
| A fair shuffle, any order | 10.67 on average | 4.17% |
| Oatley, Hurstville, Penshurst, Mortdale | 8 | 3.13% |

### Why 256 cannot be fair

The naive loop makes four choices of four, so 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 256 runs. Splitting 256 equally among 24 orders would need 10.67 each, which is impossible with whole runs.

### Why Fisher-Yates is fair

It chooses from 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 remaining items: 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24 runs, one for each order.

### A hidden bias

Hurstville itself lands in each of the four positions exactly 64 times in the naive shuffle, so a quick check of one item looks fine. The bias is in whole orders.

| Station, in its starting position | Naive shuffle | Fisher-Yates |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hurstville (1st) | 111,276 | about 111,000 |
| Penshurst (2nd) | 142,257 | about 111,000 |
| Mortdale (3rd) | 130,680 | about 111,000 |
| Riverwood (9th) | 86,901 | about 111,000 |

With nine stations a fair shuffle puts each one first about 111,111 times in a million. Fisher-Yates stayed between 110,656 and 111,493 for every station. The naive version favoured stations near the start of the list, and Penshurst led by more than 31,000. Every count above is our own calculation; the stations are simply names from Transport for NSW's published network.

In Python

## Two loops that look identical

The fair and unfair shuffles differ by one number in one line, which is exactly why this bug survives in real code.

| Version | Choice of partner at step i | Result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Naive | Any position from 0 to n minus 1 | Biased towards some orders |
| Fisher-Yates | Only positions from i to n minus 1 | Every order equally likely |
| Python built-in | random.shuffle(stations) | Fisher-Yates inside |

Learners write both versions, then write the exhaustive counter that tries every run, and only then compare their result with random.shuffle. The point is not to avoid the built-in; it is to understand it well enough to trust it, and to recognise the naive loop when an AI suggests it.

### Primary children

Shuffle four name cards with dice in both ways and tally which orders appear over a lesson.

### High school

Write the exact counter with itertools.product, then run a million-shuffle experiment and plot the bias.

### Adults

See why fair shuffling matters in A/B testing, quiz platforms and any system where order should not decide outcomes.

Transport for NSW, NSW Spatial Services, Georges River Council, the NSW Department of Education and the statistics bureau provide the open data used here and have no connection with Modern Age Coders.

Around Hurstville

## Schools from 1876 and a busy interchange

A few more facts from the state school file and the station counts.

### Hurstville Public School

The NSW Department of Education gives October 1876 as the date of the school's first teacher.

### Hurstville South

Hurstville South Public School followed in June 1915, according to the same file.

### The station

Transport for NSW counted 499,555 entries at Hurstville Station in August 2026.

The nine stations

Hurstville, Penshurst, Mortdale, Oatley, Beverly Hills, Allawah, Carlton, Kogarah and Riverwood stations all fall inside the Georges River council area when their mapped positions are tested against the bureau's boundaries.

## AI writes shuffles in a second. Why should a Hurstville student learn Fisher-Yates?

Because the unfair shuffle looks correct, passes casual tests, and is exactly the kind of code an AI can produce.

Ask an assistant for a shuffle and you may get the swap-with-anyone loop. It runs, it mixes the list, and if you only check where one item lands it looks perfect, as Hurstville's 64 runs in every position showed. The flaw shows up only when you count whole orders.

A student who has enumerated the 256 runs knows what to test and how. They replace the loop with random.shuffle, or check the AI's version against exact counts, and they apply the same suspicion to any code that claims to be random.

In 2026 the Hurstville learners who can test randomness will catch the bugs AI tools introduce, and that habit is built by writing and checking code themselves. The longer argument is in [why teenagers should still learn to code in 2026](/blog/is-coding-worth-learning-2026).

FAQ

## Hurstville coding and Python questions

The questions Hurstville families and adult learners ask us most often.

### How many people live in Hurstville?

The 2021 Census QuickStats for the Hurstville suburb record 31,162 residents, with a median age of 33.

### What is the Fisher-Yates shuffle?

The Fisher-Yates shuffle randomly orders a list by swapping each position with a randomly chosen position that has not yet been fixed. Each of the possible orders comes out with exactly the same probability, and Python's random.shuffle works this way.

### Why is swapping each item with any item unfair?

With n items it creates n to the power n equally likely runs, which cannot be split evenly among the n factorial possible orders. For four items that is 256 runs over 24 orders, so some orders must come up more often.

### What is the Hurstville shuffle project?

Learners shuffle the names of Georges River stations two ways, count every possible run exactly for four stations, and run a million-shuffle experiment for nine. They see the naive method favour stations near the start of the list while Fisher-Yates stays even.

### Is this maths or coding?

Both. The project teaches Python loops and lists alongside counting and probability, which is how real programmers check their code.

### Can my child start with no experience?

Yes. Beginners from age six start with block coding, and Python comes once they are reading and typing comfortably.

### Do you teach adults?

Yes. Adults learn Python for work, data and automation, one to one or in adult groups.

### Is there a Hurstville centre?

No. Every lesson is live online and we have no premises in Australia. The phone number on our site is Indian.

### How much do Hurstville Python classes cost?

The first lesson is free. After that a group place costs USD 100 a month for two live lessons a week, about eight a month, with fifteen to twenty learners, or USD 150 a month one to one.

### How large are the groups?

Between five and ten learners, matched by level and pace. One-to-one lessons are available if no group suits.
