The short version Math Kangaroo USA is the American edition of the international Kangaroo competition, open to students from kindergarten to grade 12, sat at the grade the student is actually in. It is a 75-minute multiple-choice test: 24 questions for grades 1 to 4 and 30 for grades 5 to 12, a third of them worth 3 points, a third 4 and a third 5, with no points taken away for a wrong answer and no calculators, for a best score of 96 in grades 1 to 4 and 120 in grades 5 to 12. The 2027 competition is in March, on the organiser's stated "3rd Thursday in March," with registration from 15 September to 31 December 2026 at $20 per student and late registration to 1 February 2027 at $35. A family can register a child at a public center or through the virtual self-proctored option without the school, which makes it one of the few US contests open to every family. What exactly is the test? ## The Math Kangaroo USA format, straight from the organiser Everything below is taken from mathkangaroo.org and its About the Test FAQ, read on 22 September 2026. It matters because Kangaroo's scoring is unlike school tests, and the strategy follows from the scoring. | What the organiser publishes | Math Kangaroo USA | | --- | --- | | Who can sit it | Students in grades 1 to 12; kindergarten students "are welcome to participate at grade 1." A student sits the paper for their actual grade: "Participation at levels lower than the actual school grade level is not allowed." | | Length and questions | "A 75 minute multiple-choice test... 24 questions for students in grades 1-4 and 30 questions for students in grades 5 and higher." | | Scoring | "1/3 of questions are 3 points each, 1/3 - 4 points each, 1/3 - 5 points each... The organiser's published figures, not ours | | What it leads to | A standalone annual competition with its own awards and national rankings; it is not a qualifier for another contest. The natural next step for a strong student is AMC 8 | Two things follow. First, the scoring: a 5-point question and a 3-point question are the same size on the page, and a wrong answer costs nothing, so the winning approach is to answer everything, to leave nothing blank, and to spend the last ten minutes on the 5-point questions rather than the first ten. Most children do the opposite. Second, the entry route: this is the contest for the family whose school does not run one, because a parent can register at a public center or online, which is rare in the United States and is why we built this page. A naming trap to avoid: Math Kangaroo USA is not the UK Mathematics Trust's Kangaroo rounds, which are invitation-only follow-ons to the UK Challenges for UK schools. Both descend from the same international federation, but they have different papers, dates, fees and entry rules. This page is about the American competition. Q2. What kinds of questions come up? ## The question families Kangaroo reuses, and how the points are spread Kangaroo does not test the syllabus in order. It reuses a small number of question families every year, in three difficulty bands, and a child who recognises the family in the first five seconds has already won most of the mark. The 3-point third ### Fast, friendly, easy to rush Arithmetic with a twist, simple patterns, reading a picture or a clock, counting shapes. These are the marks a well-prepared child must not drop, and the ones a nervous child drops most, by misreading. We practise them at speed, with a rule: read the last sentence twice. The 4-point third ### Logic with the grade's mathematics Working backwards, number puzzles with a few conditions, simple combinatorics, geometry that needs one line drawn. The syllabus content of the grade, asked in a costume the textbook never used. This is where the base course and the contest course meet. The 5-point third ### The problems that decide the medal Multi-step reasoning, cases to organise, an insight that turns a long calculation into a short one. Left blank by most children and attempted last by ours, because a wrong answer costs nothing and a guess after elimination is worth trying. The strategy ### What "no negative marking" changes Answer everything. Do the paper in three passes: the 3-pointers first at pace, the 4-pointers with care, then all the time that remains on the 5-pointers, eliminating options before guessing. A child who has rehearsed this on five past papers walks in calm. The organiser publishes past papers and solutions, which we use for placement, weekly practice and full rehearsals and send families to rather than reproduce here. Every student sees a real Kangaroo paper for their grade in the first week, with a clock. Q3. Why recognising the family beats calculating ## The same 5-point question, two students A grade 5 to 6 style problem: "A kangaroo hops along a number line. Each hop is 3 or 5 units. What is the smallest number of hops to land exactly on 24?" Both students can add. One of them spends four minutes; the other, forty seconds. ***The calculating answer**trying combinations* ``` 3 + 3 + 3 + ... eight hops of 3 = 24. Can I do better with 5s? 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20, need 4: no. 5 + 5 + 5 = 15, need 9: 3 + 3 + 3, that is 6 hops. 5 + 5 = 10, need 14: 3 x ? no... # Four minutes gone, and the # student is not sure the search # is finished. Six? Maybe. ``` Correct, eventually, at the cost of three 4-point questions elsewhere. The student never asked what the smallest number of hops must look like. ***The recognising answer**rehearsed in class* ``` Fewest hops means as many 5s as possible. Four 5s = 20, leftover 4: not a hop. Three 5s = 15, leftover 9 = three 3s. That is 6 hops, and no way uses more than three 5s, so 6 is the minimum. # Forty seconds. Then on to the # next 5-pointer with time to spare. # The family: "biggest piece first, # then fix the leftover." It returns # every year in a new costume. ``` Same problem, one idea: use the biggest hop as often as the leftover allows. The second class every week is for exactly this, naming the family so the child sees it next March. Every band has its families: working backwards, invariants, counting by organised cases, the extra line in a geometry figure. The plan below teaches them by name, then rehearses the three-pass strategy until it is a habit. Q4. How does the batch prepare? ## Five steps, counted back from the third Thursday in March Two live classes a week. One on the grade's mathematics and the question families, one on timed practice from past Kangaroo papers, reviewed question by question the next class. 1. #### A placement on a real Kangaroo paper in the first week The past paper for the child's grade, sat alone with the clock, then walked through together. It tells the teacher which band will earn the marks and which will lose them, and it tells you honestly where your child stands before any preparation. 2. #### The grade's mathematics, taught for understanding Kangaroo asks the grade's own content sideways, so gaps in the base show up as lost 3-point marks. The base course runs alongside for students who need it; students who are secure go straight to the families. 3. #### The question families, by name, one a week Working backwards, biggest piece first, organised cases, patterns and periods, the extra line, counting without listing. Each taught as an idea, then met in three costumes from past papers so the child recognises it rather than remembers it. 4. #### The three-pass strategy, rehearsed Every timed set is sat in three passes with a stopwatch, because the scoring rewards a full paper over a perfect half. By February the child does it without being told. 5. #### Two full rehearsals, then the real one The last four weeks are past papers under contest conditions, one a week, reviewed line by line. Students walk into the center or open the virtual test having already sat the paper twice. Batches for American families run in US evening and weekend slots; the mentor fixes the time on the call once we know the grade and the time zone. Is this batch right for my child? ## Who it suits, and who it does not ### It suits A grade 1 to 12 student in the United States who wants a real maths competition and whose school does not run one, because a parent can register directly. A strong grade 3 to 6 student who is bored of school maths and ready for a puzzle. A family that wants the preparation to leave better reasoning behind, whatever the score. ### It also suits A student who sat Kangaroo last year unprepared and wants the medal this year. A grade 7 or 8 student using Kangaroo as the warm-up for AMC 8 in January and again in March. An Indian or international family in the US on our time zones who wants an English-medium batch in the evening. ### It does not suit A family outside the United States, because the organiser's pages say nothing about international entry and Canada runs its own separate contest that we could not verify; we will say so rather than guess. A student aiming at AIME and USAMO, who needs our AMC coaching instead. A family looking for a crash session the week before March. Q6. Yes, and it is the reason this contest suits so many families. The organiser says that if your school is not enrolled you "can register at a Public Center that accepts all students," and the virtual self-proctored option is open to "all students in the U.S., regardless of state or territory." Registration runs from mid-September to the end of December at $20 per student, with a late window to 1 February at $35, and no refunds after registration. We prepare students for the paper; you register them yourself. ### When is Math Kangaroo 2027? The organiser publishes "March 2027" for the 30th individual competition and states as a standing rule that the competition "takes place once a year on the 3rd Thursday in March." That makes 18 March 2027 the expected day; we will confirm the exact date here when Math Kangaroo posts it. Registration closes on 31 December 2026 at the standard fee and on 1 February 2027 at the late fee. ### What is the format and how is it scored? A 75-minute multiple-choice paper: 24 questions for grades 1 to 4 and 30 for grades 5 to 12. A third of the questions are worth 3 points, a third 4 and a third 5, there are no points taken away for a wrong answer, and no calculators or devices are allowed. Because nothing is deducted, a prepared child answers every question and saves time for the 5-point third. ### Which grade paper does my child sit? The grade they are actually in at school; the organiser does not allow a student to sit a lower level, and a kindergarten child sits the grade 1 paper. We batch by grade band so a grade 3 child and a grade 8 child are never in the same room, and every past paper a student practises is the one for their own grade. ### Is Math Kangaroo USA the same as the UK Kangaroo rounds? No. Both come from the same international federation, but the UK Mathematics Trust's Kangaroo rounds are follow-ons to its Challenges, open by invitation to UK schools only, with their own papers and dates. Math Kangaroo USA is an open annual competition for grades K to 12 in the United States that a family can enter directly. This page is about the American competition. ### Does Math Kangaroo lead to another contest? Not formally. The organiser positions it as a standalone annual competition with its own awards and rankings rather than a qualifying round. In practice a student who enjoys Kangaroo is ready for AMC 8 in January, and for middle schoolers MATHCOUNTS; our AMC and MATHCOUNTS pages cover those routes and many students sit all three. ### Do you use past Kangaroo papers? Yes. The organiser publishes past papers and solutions, and we use them for placement, weekly practice and two full timed rehearsals, then send families to the organiser's own archive rather than reproducing papers here. Every paper a student sits is reviewed question by question in the next class. ### Which option should we choose to sit the test? That depends on what you want from it. The in-person and proctored options at a school or center carry the full awards; the virtual self-proctored option gives a real score and a ranking range but, in the organiser's words, "no gifts or awards." If your school hosts a private center, its invitation code is confidential to the school community. The mentor will talk it through on the call, but the choice and the registration are yours. ### We are outside the United States. Can my child sit it? The organiser's pages we read say nothing about international entry, and Canada runs its own separate contest whose site we could not read, so we will not guess. We prepare students anywhere for the paper; whether your child can be entered is a question for Math Kangaroo in your country. ### What happens after I send the form? A mentor calls within a few hours, asks which grade your child is in and where they will sit the test, and books a free demo class at a time that suits you.
