## Building a path around one real child's gaps.

Worked example · custom scope-and-sequence

**The situation:** a "5th-grade" homeschooler is flying through multiplication but stalls completely on fractions, and a workbook keeps marching forward regardless — widening the gap every week.

**How we'd handle it.** Instead of one rigid grade level, we treat each strand on its own and sequence the work around the real picture:

multiplication / division → on track, push into early algebra thinkingfractions → stop and rebuild: what a fraction *is*, on a number linethen → equivalence, comparing, adding — only once meaning is solidreassess in ~3 weeks → rejoin the strands when fractions are secure

A classroom or a boxed curriculum can't do this — it has to keep the whole group moving. A 1:1 mentor can hold one strand, repair it properly, and let the strong strand keep flying, then knit them back together. What grade levels do you cover?
