Why homeschool math gets hard for parents

## You can teach almost everything yourself. Math is the subject most parents want a partner for.

Homeschooling parents are remarkable, but math is uniquely demanding to teach well: it builds strictly on itself, a single missed idea quietly breaks everything after it, and the upper levels — algebra, geometry, pre-calc — ask for expertise most of us last used decades ago. Many confident homeschool parents tell us math is the one subject where they'd love an expert beside them.

Boxed curricula promise to solve this, but they march every child at the same pace through the same order, which is the exact thing you left the classroom to escape.

What homeschooling math should be is fully individual: meet the child where they are, slow down where they need it, race ahead where they're flying, and teach for deep understanding rather than worksheet completion.

That's what a dedicated 1:1 mentor makes possible. We become your child's math teacher — or your co-teacher — building a path shaped entirely around them, with the rigor and records you want.

How it works

## A curriculum built for one child, not thirty.

The freedom of homeschooling, with the expertise of a dedicated math teacher.

### Place by understanding

We start by finding what your child genuinely knows — often different across topics — and build the path from there, not from their age.

### Design a scope-and-sequence

We map out a coherent route through the year and beyond, aligned to Common Core or standards-independent, exactly as you prefer.

### Teach for mastery, not the calendar

Your child moves on when a topic is truly understood — lingering where needed, accelerating where ready.

### Keep you informed and on the record

Notes after each class and progress summaries you can use for portfolios, evaluations, or simply your own confidence.

See how we'd plan it

## Building a path around one real child's gaps.

Worked example · custom scope-and-sequence

**The situation:** a "5th-grade" homeschooler is flying through multiplication but stalls completely on fractions, and a workbook keeps marching forward regardless — widening the gap every week.

**How we'd handle it.** Instead of one rigid grade level, we treat each strand on its own and sequence the work around the real picture:

multiplication / division → on track, push into early algebra thinkingfractions → stop and rebuild: what a fraction *is*, on a number linethen → equivalence, comparing, adding — only once meaning is solidreassess in ~3 weeks → rejoin the strands when fractions are secure

A classroom or a boxed curriculum can't do this — it has to keep the whole group moving. A 1:1 mentor can hold one strand, repair it properly, and let the strong strand keep flying, then knit them back together. That flexibility, plus the record of what's mastered, is exactly what good homeschool math looks like, and it's the heart of what we do.

Why a coding school teaches homeschool math

## We teach math as thinking — the same thinking behind coding and science.

### Reasoning over rote

We never have a child memorize what they could understand. Understanding is what transfers to coding, science and life — rote does not.

### Problem-solving habits

Breaking problems down, finding patterns, checking your work — the habits that make a strong mathematician and a strong programmer are the same.

### A natural bridge to code

As a coding school, we can carry your homeschooler from math into programming when they're ready — one connected journey of logical thinking.

We're Modern Age Coders. Homeschool families often come for math and discover their child is ready to code, because we teach both as the same underlying skill: thinking clearly about problems. That continuity is something a math-only program can't offer.

What we cover

## The full K–12 range, on your terms.

As your complete program or a focused supplement — your choice.

### Early elementary (K–2)

Number sense, counting, place value, and the first operations built on real understanding, gently and playfully.

### Upper elementary (3–5)

The four operations with fluency, fractions and decimals as real quantities, and confident word-problem reasoning.

### Middle school (6–8)

Ratios, percentages, the leap into pre-algebra and algebra, and the geometry and data that prepare for high school.

### High school (9–12)

Algebra 1 and 2, geometry, pre-calculus and beyond, with optional SAT/ACT and AP pathways as your teen approaches college.

### Acceleration & enrichment

For children ahead of grade level — deeper problems, competition math, and content well beyond a standard curriculum.

### Records & alignment

Optional Common Core or state-standard mapping, plus progress notes for portfolios and evaluations.

Who this is for

## The right fit — and an honest word on what to expect.

**This fits** the homeschool family that wants math handled by an expert, the parent confident at elementary level but wary of high-school math, the family with a child far ahead or working to catch up, and anyone who wants math taught for understanding with proper records. Secular or faith-based, eclectic or structured — the math is the math.

**What's realistic.** Mastery-based progress is steady and durable rather than instant; some strands move fast, others need time, and that's the point. We'll always tell you honestly where your child is, including when something needs more work than a parent hoped.

### What we won't do

- Force a child through a fixed pace they're not ready for.
- Teach rote procedures in place of understanding.
- Hide gaps to make progress look faster.
- Pretend to align with standards you didn't ask for.

Who teaches your child

## Mentors who respect how you've chosen to teach.

Our mentors know elementary through high-school math deeply, teach it for understanding, and work *with* homeschooling families rather than imposing a school's assumptions on them. They're flexible about pace, approach and your family's values, and clear with you about what your child needs.

The same mentor stays for the long haul, building a coherent path year over year — the continuity homeschooling does so well, applied to the one subject parents most often want help with.

"I teach everything else happily, but high-school math scared me. Handing it to one mentor who actually plans it out lifted a real weight — and my son is thriving."

— Homeschooling parent, Oregon

An honest comparison

## How we differ from the alternatives.

| What matters | Modern Age Coders | Boxed curriculum | Self-paced app |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pace fits your child | Fully individual | Fixed sequence | Somewhat |
| Live expert teaching | Yes, 1:1 | Parent-led | No |
| Catches gaps as they form | Yes, in the moment | No | Limited |
| Records for portfolio | Yes | You compile | Score logs |
| Monthly price | $100 (1:1) / $40 (group) | $80–150/yr | $10–20/mo |

A boxed curriculum is inexpensive and works for many families. We add live expert teaching and an individual pace for the families who want them, especially through the harder high-school years.

Questions homeschool parents ask

## Everything you might be wondering.

Is this a full math curriculum or just tutoring?

Either. For many families we're the complete math program — placement, scope-and-sequence, teaching and records. For others we supplement an existing curriculum. You choose the role we play.

Do you align with Common Core or state standards?

If you want — we can map to Common Core or your state's standards for portfolios and evaluations, or build a standards-independent path. Your call.

What grade levels do you cover?

Kindergarten through grade 12 — from early number sense to algebra, geometry, pre-calculus and beyond.

How does mastery-based pacing work?

Your child moves on when they truly understand a topic, not when a calendar says to — longer where needed, faster where not.

How much does it cost?

USD 100 per month for private 1:1 — eight live classes, two each week. Small-group option USD 40 per month. No contract; cancel any time.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — the first class is free, no card needed. We assess your child and discuss how much of the curriculum you want us to own.

Will my child have the same teacher?

Yes — one mentor building a coherent path across years.

Do you provide records for our portfolio or evaluation?

Yes — notes on what's covered and mastered, plus plain-language progress summaries.

My child is gifted in math and bored. Can you stretch them?

Gladly — we accelerate well beyond grade level and add depth and competition math.

Are classes live?

Yes — live, one-to-one, with a shared whiteboard.

Can you coordinate with the rest of our homeschool?

Yes — we fit the math around your family's rhythm and keep you fully in the loop.

What time zones do you cover?

All six US time zones, with daytime, evening and weekend slots. Two weekly times.
