# Group vs one-to-one maths tuition: which is worth it?

**Short answer:** one-to-one costs more per hour; a matched small group costs less and, for maths, did about as well in the school research we read. The Education Endowment Foundation reports roughly +3 months of progress for small-group maths tuition and +2 months for one-to-one. One UK tuition chain's published prices put a weekly GCSE maths group at about $177 a month against about $225 one-to-one. With us a group lesson costs $12.50 and a one-to-one lesson $18.75.

The honest answer depends on the learner, not the format. Below: what each costs, what the largest body of English school research says for maths, and a plain guide to who gains most from each, including when we would tell you a group is enough.

Evidence

## What school research found for maths

The Education Endowment Foundation reviews tuition run in English schools. Its one-to-one summary reads: "Moderate impact for moderate cost based on moderate evidence". For maths, it says: "Effects in mathematics appear to be substantially lower (+2 months) than in literacy (+6 months)."

Its small-group summary reads: "Moderate impact for low cost based on moderate evidence". For maths: "The studies in mathematics show a slightly smaller positive impact (+ 3 months)" than for reading.

In other words, in that research, maths tuition in small groups did at least as well as one-to-one, at lower cost. That matches what our tutors see when a group is genuinely matched by level.

Two caveats. These are school interventions, not private tuition, and averages hide individuals: a child with a specific gap or a test close at hand can gain far more from one-to-one time than an average suggests.

Behind the choice

## What each format gives you

### A group gives

Lower cost, regular structure, and other learners' questions, which often voice what a quiet child was wondering.

### A group needs

A real match. A group spanning grades 3 to 8 teaches the middle and loses both ends. Ours are matched by level and board.

### One-to-one gives

Every minute on one learner's mistakes, a pace set by them, and a timetable built round their week.

### One-to-one needs

A good tutor. An hour alone with a weak tutor is worse than a group with a strong one.

### The cost per lesson

At the centre prices we read, a GCSE group session costs about $26 to $41 and a one-to-one session about $41 to $52. With us the gap is $12.50 against $18.75.

### Switching

Many learners start one-to-one to fix gaps, then move to a group to keep practising. You should be able to switch without penalty; with us you can, at any month end.

Choosing

## Which format suits which learner?

### Choose a group if the learner

- is broadly on track and wants structure and practice
- learns from hearing other students' questions
- wants the lowest monthly cost over a long course

Our groups hold 15 to 20 learners at a similar level and board.

### Choose one-to-one if the learner

- has specific gaps that keep costing marks
- has an exam date close at hand
- goes quiet in a class or is anxious about maths

One learner, one tutor, their own papers.

Common questions

## Group or one-to-one maths tuition: questions parents ask

Is one-to-one maths tuition better than a group?

Not automatically. In school research on maths, small groups did about as well as one-to-one on average, at lower cost. One-to-one is worth the extra when a learner has specific gaps, a close deadline or struggles to speak up.

How much more does one-to-one maths tuition cost?

Usually noticeably more per lesson. The cost table shows published centre prices for each format and our own per-lesson prices.

How big should a maths tuition group be?

Small enough that the tutor sees each learner's working. Our groups hold 15 to 20 learners matched by level and exam board.

What does the Education Endowment Foundation say about tuition?

Its toolkit rates one-to-one tuition as moderate impact for moderate cost and small-group tuition as moderate impact for low cost, both on moderate evidence, with maths effects of about +2 and +3 months respectively.

Can my child switch from one-to-one to a group later?

Yes. Many learners start one-to-one to fix gaps and then move to a group to keep practising. With us you can switch at any month end.

Are your groups matched by exam board?

Yes, for GCSE and A level groups we match by level and board, so the past papers in the lesson are the ones your child will sit.

Is there a contract?

No. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop or switch at any month end.

Can we try a lesson first?

Yes. The [first lesson is free](/book-demo?subject=maths) and needs no card, and the tutor will tell you which format they would choose for your child. For a class today or tomorrow, [book a Priority Demo](/priority-demo); if you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.

Why are prices in US dollars?

We teach families in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so the page uses one currency. UK market prices were converted at one stated exchange rate.

## Let the tutor tell you which format your child needs.

In the free first lesson the tutor sees how your child works, then recommends a group or one-to-one, and says so plainly when a group is enough. No card needed.
